Because we want them to know. It's a message. "We have been waiting". Think of what a shock it is to a mostly scientific mission to find out what happened to humanity when they discovered that humans were secretly preparing to totally wipe out anybody foolish enough to attack Earth again. The story said "maybe millions" in stasis. I'm betting it's more likely "billions".
