I think there are two ways for nadeo to fix this either
1. Have four action keys or varying percentages and then one custom action key which allows you to change the percentage and how many seconds it takes to reach that percentage
2. Just use the same programs that their competitors are using but have it built in game
or have fully customizable action keys, but add a little noise to the input, so they can never lock on a specific value. put a plus or minus 3% range on the input. if you hold it a 35, it'll go from 32 to 38 max. think of it as the tires reacting to imperfections on the road surface.
not sure how that would feel to play, but it's a solution i suppose.
@@GraveUypo I don't think adding RNG to a deterministic game is a valid solution.
@@GraveUypo I would rather not have my car understeer then over steer on the same corner because of RNG
@@GraveUypo please never become balance dev if your balance is fucking rng in otherwise 100% deterministic game.
Well, since there is no algorithm for real random numbers it would stay a 100% deterministic game because they for sure would not use entropy based rng generators.
But the idea is crap for other reasons.
The analogue keyboard crackdown is so strange because its so impossible to enforce. Even if they could prevent all of the software tools people are using across keyboard and controllers, a lot of these inputs can be created purely in hardware. For example, it's super easy to find the angle on a controller joystick that you want and carve a notch there so you can always hold an exact steering percent.
Yeah, so instead of enforcing it (they can’t) they just punish Wirtual for talking about it because it embarrasses them.
Certainly they won't be able to stop every possible method. But still software is much more easily accessible way to control your steering input from map to map. Even if hardware is used might it not be possible to detect unnatural levels of precision? Realistically no most people that silently use it aren't going to be caught or punished.
But even then they still need to set this precedent. Nadeo has already previously stated they want a normal keyboard to be equally viable and not have players limited by what peripherals they can buy. If you just allow this kind of customization to your analog keyboard that would be going against that statement.
@@luckygozer Except a normal keyboard is no longer equally viable when compared to an analogue device since as a controller or wheel.
That said, I still think the best steering input device is a flight stick.
@@SylviusTheMad Indeed it isn't. I assume Nadeo will try to update the game to bring them closer together again as the most realistic response to this whole situation.
Or 3D printing a custom socket for your analog controller with commonly used angles... Nadeo is choosing to die on Hamburger Hill.

The issue is at least twofold. Firstly, it makes people just not admit what they're using. But more importantly in my eyes, it doesn't even make sense. What counts as a 'controller'? As far as the game is concerned an analogue keyboard IS a controller. And if Xbox controllers can use custom curves from their 'calibration' software then there's no reason Wootility can't be used too. As per the literal reading of the rules it should be allowed.
And it is really easy to fix in rules - allow no platos except dead zones for analog input with some room to prevent cheesing this out by making curve with very small change of the device output per large change of its input.
Like, sensitivity, logarithmic curves - ok, plato if not dead zone - not ok
Never mind voice command percentage steering, how about mind control percentage steering? You just have to intensely think of the percentage steering you want and maintain it through the turn without getting distracted by Perrikaryal (she is sitting next to you).

Tbh the whole analogue keyboard thing is like if nadeo said people weren't allowed to use controllers with sticks because it would mean the people still using an NES controller that only has a d-pad would have to buy a separate piece of equipment. Just that controllers with sticks are far more common than analogue keyboards at the moment, but we'll see if the sentiment is the same when analogue keyboards are the norm similar to high refresh rate monitors
Nadeo don’t care about the device you use, they care about setting up custom steering profiles to get exact steering angles.
@@chronovore7234 They don't care about steam input and G-hub though.
I don't think analog keyboards will ever be the norm, they're weird specialized tech which is basically only useful for the niche of PC gamers who prefer keyboard for racing games, which is a niche containing basically only Trackmania players and no one else in the world. I agree with the basic point, though, which is that Nadeo is taking a very weird and shortsighted stance on this because they don't want to grapple with new tech
@@TheAmorphousGamer the fact you only know about its usage in TM doesn't mean it is used only in TM
@@TheAmorphousGameri know at least they are super useful in rhythm games too.
you gotta admire wirtual sticking by his stance on being pro analogue keyboard despite nadeo essentially waging war against them being used
agreed, he has most peoples respect for doing this in the first place. although its not so much the analog keyboard itself, analog input devices in general are fine with nadeo. the problem is that they lack any kind of specificity with regards to how software can be used to modify the way those analog input devices work. Controllers, Wheels and even a mouse can be used to steer, and those often have software that adjusts the way they work in almost exactly the same way Wirtual did to his analog keyboard. But they appear to have taken a hard stance against using software to modify an analog keyboard but made basically no decisions about other input devices. They are so lazy and only said anything about this because Wirtual used his platform to bring it to everyones attention. There are likely LOTS of players who already use software to modify the way their input devices work but simply dont say anything. Additionally theres also players who use physical alterations to their input devices such as notches on their analog sticks to hold specific angles for steering but those are not detectable so Nadeo will never make any kind of statement about it. Like I said, theyre so lazy. I thought it was kinda bullshit that they gave Wirtual any kind of warning about this. Its already bullshit enough that other input devices have a significant advantage over keyboard with regards to steering angles, and they essentially decided to nerf any possible bridging of that gap without addressing the underlining issue =/
The issue is not, nor was it ever, the use of 'Analogue' keyboards, but the use of custom steering profiles.
In both the 'Midori' and 'Snow-Car' controversy, the issue was that Wirtual had used an external tool to artificially limit the maximum steering input to a value less than 100%(34% and 60% respectively).
The point Wirtual is making is that he wants Nadeo to provide a more concrete definition of what they consider to be an 'Unfair Advantage'.
@@callumwright7459 He didn't limit his input in the second. He used a profile that made it easier to hold 60%, but it still required his own skill to do so and could still provide any steering input.
He pretends like their statement was super ambiguous. It's crystal clear to me. 1:1 input, what you press should be what the game receives. No software modifying your inputs etc. He's just being a petulant child and whining about it honestly annoying everybody at this point
@@undisabled1552 The statement is crystal clear, and it doesn't say what you're claiming. The new statement only clarifies that the maximum must be 100% and the minimum must be 0%. The previous statement is that you cannot change curve on the fly. Neither of these prevent a custom full-range curve that you stick with at all times.
Further to this they explicitly *allow* calibration software, and calibration software always allows custom curves - because the mechanical input will never be perfectly linear to begin with, so even if you wanted a linear input, a custom curve is required for top-end play anyway.
Nadeo have completely failed to clarify any point that he was actually asking about in the most recent debacle, only reiterate points that were already clear because he specifically avoided them to begin with.
wirtual, can you use a plugin that shows the action key you currently have activated? It would be really helpful!
Tbh it's really only ever been the Stadium environment that has been balanced between pad and keyboard. Other environments haven't managed to achieve this balance, and I think it's a mistake for Nadeo to be introducing new gameplay in the form of recycling old physics, instead of creating new environments and cars that can handle both pad and keyboard equally.
I agree with you. It's great to have new content, but reusing the old cars/environments just feels a bit lazy. Of course, they had to be adjusted for the new surfaces in tm2020, but they should only be released when tweaked to a point, that they are balanced for all the major input devices.
Wirtual: I'm not going to talk about it.
Also Wirtual: Since I mentioned it...
10/10 would slather myself in mayonnaise and slide around on the floor to this!
Dude I just fell asleep so quick, I wasn’t even trying to either. It’s like magic or something
From what I have read, you are allowed to use your analog kb as long as there is no custom limit like dx tweak. The grey area is if you can use a custom curve or not. Is all of that correct?
Basically yes. Especially because controllers like the Elite for Xbox can also do custom steering profiles and nothing was said about them.
@@8Pixels "We know that some top of the range gaming devices offer the possibility to switch the joystick sensitivity curve at any time and this is currently not allowed. "
nobody in this fanbase has reading comprehension
What does Nadeo think of steering wheels? They can steer very smooth and it's very easy to hold an exact percentage. Really the only downside they have is the time it takes to change directions.
That’s how Granady plays. Look him up. They support it.
Starting 2024 with a great nap, listening to Wirtual tap tapping away on his customized keyboard :)
I've had an Idea on the action keys dilemma.
Why not have the mapper choose certain action keys for the track and/or let the mapper limit the steering for the track? That way there is a solution to the problem (at least in my head) and tracks become way more interesting with this new mapping feature.
It's not like every mapper plays keyboard so they wouldn't know what action keys to pick. Or they could just grief kb players by putting really bad action keys
I kinda like this
Ok but that would make it so at least all cup of the day maps would have to be playtested by keyboard beforehand. So what about having 2 banks that you can switch on the fly? One set to custom values by the user and one set by the mapper with a pop-up screen so you can decide which one to set as default. And also making it so you can switch between them by keeping a button pressed.
The funny thing is that this can make it so people start making "set-ups" like irl so they can have better times
What really confused me the first time I played Trackmania 2020 is that you seem to have infinite grip on wood. I expected to need to drift in a very fast curve on the first campaign map, but instead I just drove a sharp curve at several hundred km/h into the inner wall and then pingponged back and forth between the walls and had lost all my speed until the jump onto the big yellow booster.
The answer to the steering percentages is VERY simple. It's a car racing game. Imagine driving a real life car where the car only steers at 100%, or you have to push a special button to get to other set percentages. I play all games with mouse and keyboard, except for racing games because of this reason.
I think the only reason Nadeo pulled out the yellow card was that a World Record was set using the analogue input method. I think if it had been brought to their attention without the WR being set, then it may have been less of a drama for them, but then they may also have not cared. It's a catch 22, and it sucks really
Yeah, they likely would've ignored it. Wirtual forced them to answer.
@@seanrrr And still failed to do so because Nadeo is stupid.
I dont know how okay this would be, but the only way an analog input can be set on a digital keyboard if they measure time.
Basically you have a key that you hold down for a specific time. Example: you have 1second to set the steering angle. If you press it for 0,5 second, you get a 50% steering, if you just press it 0,27 second, you get 27% steering. Next to this limit all analog devices to have a 0-100% steering with a straight line between. I dont know if this is a good solution to the game, but it would be decently fair IMO.

Constantly adjustable action keys maybe? so you do something like type (%)* for action key 1 (%)- for action key 2 and so on and be able to change in game.
the COTD Format is literally "Clutch or Kick" every single round
Yeah most cups are knock out tournaments, although the format of this one is slightly different
@@InvagPrune i know how everything works i am playing the game for quite a while now, i just wanted to make a dad joke, anyways thanks for the explanation
correct me if i am wrong, but i feel like nadeo causes more trouble balancing controllers than most games do. I feel like lots of games have either just one control scheme, or they basically just accept there is one optimal controller for the game
Especially with the trucks
The fix for action key is simple. Action key should change the *rate* of steering, not value. So for steering to a certain value you do this:
Slowest action key comfotable -> start steering -> wait until target steering -> hold
Hold button is like a 0 velocity, aka hold at whatever value it's at. It saves effort in maintaining steering, that can cause injury like repeated stress injury.
Another banger remix, you love to see it

Should have custom action keys, configurable 1-100% in increments of 1. Let people bind 100 of them if they really want.

Literally just old back logged shit
He could stop streaming entirely and we would still have cotd videos in 5 years, with how slow they are to come out.
First song of the cup: Field of Hopes and Dreams
How do you get Vibe badge in trackmania?
Maybe make all steering happen in steps of 20% and then have action keys to hit those percentages, so controllers, steering wheels, and keyboard all have to tap essentially and can't hold a perfect 34%
Action keys with 100 different ones would easily be solved with the scroll wheel lol
Goodnight fellas
Just make action keys have customizable steering percentages. Its not a perfect fix, but it would be a significant improvement
that used to be allowed, but was removed for the same reason as the ice change, keyboard users had a clear advantage under some circumstances

I think Nadeo and many other game devs should understand, that if you keep shooting the messenger, soon you'll find that you are not getting any more messages.

I don't see an issue with action keys. Okay so you have a button that lets you get a perfect 5 degree angle, but you still need to recognise when to use it. I'm still learning the game so would have no clue when to choose what angle. It wouldn't take away from 'skill' in that sense.

What does AMP Stand for (its is in game title)
According to the Boot Competition Organizers, are Homemade Boots OK?
i didnt fully get what he meant, care to explain it to me with words i can understand xD
@MuccManga The boots are the different kinds of input devices you can use to play TM. You are basically allowed to use any kind of input device (boots) to play the game, so there is people playing with a keyboard, a joystick, a racing wheel or a combination of them (Granady for example). The problem is that certain input devices allow for more or different customization than others. The issue then lies with the advantage of being able to input a specific steering value with certain devices but not others, leading to certain input devices being more viable or possibly necessary to compete consistently at the highest level of play.
Proposal: 4 action keys, limiting your steering by 6.25/12.5/25/50% when held. The values combine additively when held together. This lets you limit steering to any value between 100% and just over 6% and any 6% increment in between using only four buttons, and combined with tapping lets you modulate as needed between those values. Since they're held buttons, you can't forget which action key you're in and switching between them is quick.
The only downside is that many "basic" keyboards are limited in how many buttons you can hold at the same time, although any half-decent gaming keyboard allows at least 6 and sometimes a lot more.
As an aside, it's amazing how many in chat have entirely missed the point of your analog keys stunt. It was obviously done deliberately and intentionally to try and force a response (which it did, although not really as clearly as we would have liked) from a large faceless corporation that would otherwise make every effort to leave ambiguity and avoid making any controversial statements if they can. You obviously do not care about the individual record at all or even that much about any potential suspensions, but about the long-term health of the game and sometimes, you need to ruffle some feathers to move the discussion forward.
Wirtual is the new Riolu. (in a good way)

I honestly think that the best Trackmania steering device is a piano, there are so many action keys on a piano that it would be a shame to use it only for music.

the real question is should nadeo prefer high skill ceiling or low skill floor for the new system.
How come I never hear anything about custom curves on controller? Are there the same rules as keyboard? Or has he adressed this too but I missed it.
It was mentioned somewhere along this discussion since the Midori. As far as I understood - Nadeo doesn't really carry (or cared until very recently), everyone just was doing everything silently, from physical mods, like notches on the cover around sticks to slot that stick into it, to different software.
But Wirtual decided to make rules more clear and even the playfield, so he brought it to a very broad public and Nadeo just had to do something (basically what he was saying since after the Midori).
Rules are the same for everyone, no 3rd-party software. Except " " "calibration" " " software of the vendor of your devices. Everything else was given by PSAs, not the ToS or some other documentation.
P.s. in general TM rules are really as clear and defined as "don't bad, be good", LMAO
AMP is clearly Are Mechanicalkeyboards Permitted (or Prohibited) xD
Wirtual is right, Nadeo not clarifying makes people not admit how they're playing.
well it's less about them not clarifying and more the fact that they punished a whistleblower. This creates distrust between the playerbase and the devs leading to more secrecy
@@Lavassin Have they pulled his records yet?
"However, using an external tool to readjust a gaming device to set a custom range (limiting the steering range from 0% to less than 100%, for example) is not allowed in Trackmania. Anyone going to bring up that NASCAR, F1, and most other racing competitions literally have custom steering ranges? Imagine making a racing game that prides itself in analogue input devices, who then punishes digital input device users for attempting to be analog users
(Jk, i know the issue was more about setting custom curves to optimize precise steering ranges... But like, every curve is customized by SOMEONE. Even stock/factory curves were designed by a 3rd party manufacturer that isn't the User, nor Nadao... The only difference is changing who's seeing the curves based on the specific game they're playing.
Why do you think driving different makes and models of vehicles have different driving experiences in real life? Different driving conditions cause need for different stats. Different games and different tracks require different curves/inputs for optimization.

Nah, what you need is a head tracker. More lean, more steer.
Hey wirtual,
I had an idea on how to solve the action key problem and would like to hear your opinion.
What is if you had only like 3 action keys, but you could customize the steering percentage, that way every one can use specific percentages without having to buy a analog keyboard.
Filmed on my birthday 🎉🎉🎉
Perhaps include a feature where users can switch between action keys in a way that, with precise timing, allows them to hit every specified steering percentage. For instance, if you want to steer at 50%, and you have action keys set for 60% and 40%, you could start at 40%. Pressing the key would then gradually increase the steering percentage from 41% to 60% in, let's say, 0.4 seconds. Pressing the key again would smoothly decrease the steering percentage back to its initial value. So, if you hit the key at 40%, you'd need to press it again with exact timing after about 0.2 seconds to maintain 50% steering. In my mind, it's akin to speed sliding at the moment.
Isn't this the guy who drives analog pyramids?

Good nigh!!
Why doesn't Nadeo just say something like "Custom ranges must not be overly specialized for one race"
Then custom ranges have to be useful for most tracks, and setting a custom curve from 0-60% would be considered overly specialized
But more pronounced curves, like 5-15-30-60-100 or something would be allowed, or other types of curves from 0-100
The reason to go to 100 here is not some arbitrary limitation, but because full-steering is required on many tracks
Essentially, the point of this would be to reduce abuse of analog inputs, while allowing the community to drive how they're comfortable
damn he still complaining about the keyboard
Hype!

no matter the game be it a MMO a racing game Speedruns of a single player game any type of game rules need to be AS CLEAR AS POSSIBLE to leave no room for interpretation other wise you will get stuff like this and worse like lets say Nadeo starts banning people with top 1000 times on official tracks for using Bug slides of something and no change to there stated rules has occurred that wouldn't be fine people would not like that the rules are not clear in MMOs its not always stated bugs are not allowed but people get banned for it Like there was no rules against Pking outside of the wilderness in Runescape and it still happened due to a bug if the rules where more clearly stated less people would've died in that runescape event if any% runs of super Mario bros banned the use of clipping in walls and never said anything people would be upset it doesn't matter if its a hardware or software advantage as long as its something doable in the game it should be fair game imo there is an obvious difference between setting custom things on your keyboard that don't abuse the game and do what others can do with other input devices and something like using a program to slow down the game to make it easier to get records or using something to give yourself permanent reactor
