We’re Thomas and Sheena, food and travel fiends. We travel full time, hunting for the BEST local food in the world to showcase via our UA-cam videos. Food is a window into a country's culture and one of the most exciting ways to get to know a place.
We're all about eating what and where the locals eat. You won't find food that's been created merely to be social media worthy on here- no rainbow bagels, gold leaf soft serves- just genuine, authentic food that tastes incredible.
From street food to mom and pop restaurants, we want to show you the best and most authentic food we find on our travels.

Dominion Rd is truly iconic. It has always been known for it’s variety of different cuisines, brings back memories
It’s one of my favourite parts of town! Thanks for watching John, so glad you enjoyed this video- hope you like the rest of the Dominion Rd series. Cheers, Sheena
Just want to say a big thank you for putting in the effort of pronouncing ‘Uyghur’ as accurate as you could. We are often mispronounced as ‘wee-ger’ , and a lot of people don’t realise how damaging it is to our Uyghur identity and culture.
Thanks so much for watching Tokatch and for being so forgiving with our pronunciation! ‘Wee-ger’ is used so commonly isn’t it- we noticed it even in our comments in this video. We loved getting to eat some traditional food from your culture. It was delicious! Cheers, Sheena
Man underrated channel , just binge watching the vids lol
😍😍😍 aww thanks so much SAHIL! So glad you’re enjoying our content mate! Hope you like what we have coming up 😄 have an awesome day! Cheers, Sheena

lve heard of Uyghur cuisine but never seen it before, what an absolute privilege for you guys to be able to try the food and see how the Chefs prepare such rare dishes!! (Do they have an English Menu?) NZ climate certainly lends itself to these hearty dishes. I got the giggles when Thomas "spilt the tea" aghh yes there is one in every family 🤭. Bring on Thailand street food with friends!!!
Omg it was sooo funny! I couldn’t stop giggling when he did that BBB. Yep- the menu was in English 😄 such tasty dishes- that fried lamb and potato is such a favourite of ours! Thanks for watching and commenting BBB. Cheers, Sheena

I give you a solid 10/10 for pronouncing Uyghur/Uygur perfectly. NZ was somewhere I was saving up for pre-Covid, along with Auz, but those plans went to crap. One day... One day.
😆 thanks mate!
Hope you get to visit us one day soon! A Aotearoa awaits with open arms! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena

Great vid guys! I used to work in a Thai restaurant there in NZ. I miss their curries and pad thais! I also miss the sushis there in NZ. I think New Zealand has one of the best sushis in the world
😄😄😄
Whereabouts was the restaurant mate? Hope you can get back to NZ for a visit one day soon. Hope this series is bringing back happy memories of your time here 😄 Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate Silk Thai in Taupo. But they are not operational anymore. The owner went back to Thailand. And yeah it does bring back a lot of good memories. 🙂 I’m planning to visit NZ when things get a little bit back to normal. Hopefully by next year or 2023. And I also want to move back there for good. I miss the laid back lifestyle over there and the heaps of great food NZ has to offer. Hehe and Kiwis are genuinely nice and the lifestyle there is not that stressful. That’s why I really wanna settle there again one day 🙂
@@Nico-ze2gl hope it’s not too long before you can get back mate! Aotearoa sends its love 😄 Hope you enjoy our NZ content until you can get back!
So my sort of food! The lamb/potato dish i'm sitting here drooling over - is it high in heat with the spices? i LOVE cumin! OMG and the cucumber salad! The pies omg yet somewhere else I need to visit!
Now Thai food - looks truly amazing and so authentic! I love everything Thai!
The Donuburi looked amazing - i've never tried raw prawn!
😍😍😍 thanks for watching Debbie! The lamb and potato is not super fiery at all- just a bit of chilli but loads of cumin. Bet you’d love it! We love this restaurant so much. Argh we love all three spots. Hope you guys get a chance to visit them too one day soon. Have a great week Debbie! Cheers, Sheena
Love Uyghur food. Yum!
Us too! Gotta get some takeaways from there soon I reckon. Thanks for watching and commenting syc008. Cheers, Sheena

😍😍😍 so glad you enjoyed it mate! Thanks for watching this one. Spoilt for choice along Dominion Rd right?! Cheers, Sheena
Sheena, you were delivering some ASMR realness with that beautiful Uyghur food! That lamb made my mouth water. And speaking of moreish-your vlogs have that effect on me. I crave more and more! Sending love and light. 🙌❤️
That crunch right Michael? 😆🤤 Omg that lamb was fabulous! You’re the best- thank you so much for your support. Hope you are feeling relaxed from your vacay!! Big love! Cheers, Sheena
such a fun way of displaying the Hanging kebab.
Neat isn’t it! I’d love to see it being cooked like that one day also. The food is so delicious there. Thanks for watching this one guys! Thomas 😀
*Uyghur* - Had only once so am really unfamiliar with the cuisine. Never knew about the street pies or the meat rack. 😀
*Kaisendon* - Prefer Ikura over Tobiko but that would bump up the price. Still, perfect looking lunch. 🐟🦐🍚
*Isaan* - Som Tam, larb and sausages! Awesome Northern Thailand rep.
*Uyghur Human Rights* - Since ya’ll are acutely concerned with these issues, thoughts? In the news regularly.
Hehe I’d opt for Ikura too if there was a choice 😆 they had a delicious ikura and king salmon bowl on the menu too. I wasn’t aware the pies were street food- they were fantastic- really rustic and clean in flavour. It’s hideous what’s happening over there to the Uyghur communities- we keep up to date on the news. It’s such an awful, sickening situation- without it seems a solution?
Thanks for watching Tosh! Cheers, Sheena
Just last week the U.S. passed a bill that bans any product from companies in Xinjiang that cannot prove they do not use forced labor with the assumption that all products manufactured in the region are using labor camps. It will be difficult to enforce but a good first step to apply some financial pressure. And just yesterday the U.S. Congress officially formed a Uyghur Congressional Caucus which is basically a committee of lawmakers who will focus on all issues regarding Uyghur human rights. We’ll see.
You guys need to try the Thai food at the Clevedon Farmers market. Best in NZ by far 😋
We’ve heard so much about the Clevedon Farmers Market Dale! Can’t wait to get there. Will make sure we eat some Thai food! Thanks for watching mate. Cheers, Sheena
A great watch loved it thanks. I live just off Dominion Rd and have been wanting to try the Uyghur restaurant, but only myself and youngest eat lamb. My wife dislikes it. Maybe I’ll have a sneaky dinner for two. The Thai restaurant looks fab I’m going to go this week. I’m from Adelaide Australia and must admit we are disappointed with Thai and especially Vietnamese food here.
I reckon a sneaky dinner for two is the way to go Andrew 😂 It’s such a neat spot. I totally hear you on the Thai and Vietnamese front- we used to live in Melbourne and were spoilt for choice on both fronts. Have you been to Try it Out in Otahuhu for Vietnamese? It’s great there. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate thanks for the reply Sheena yes I should have said a disclaimer.. apart from try it out ... a chef/owner from Bar Lilian told me about this place and have takeaway from there a few times it's quite close to Australian Vietnamese restaurants! Also loving your series on Auckland restaurants it's made me realise yes the diversity here is quite astounding. Must eat out more although Covid has limited us for three years .. have a great weekend
@@andrewschirmer3849 wonderful! We need to get back there again soon. We are so spoilt for choice here- it’s been awesome showcasing what we have on our doorstep. You might be slowly winning me over from the traditional gristle and gravy pie. That Uighur lamb pie does look very good.
😆😆😆
I reckon you’d love these Stephen! They were really rustic- and super flavoursome. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena
so great to have this food in NZ. my sister went to urumqi a few years ago and it opened my eyes to how diverse the food is in china. will visit next time i'm up in AKL.

So much delicious food 😄 thanks for watching and commenting Soniya! Cheers, Sheena
We stumbled across that Uyghur restaurant a couple of years ago - wandered in off the street having no idea what kind of food they served. Turned out to be delicious and a go-to place for us. If I was going to recommend two dishes from Jade Town, I'd say definitely get the smashed cucumber salad and the fried lamb and potato dish. (It's usually served with lamb, but they'll do it with beef if you ask them.. both are really delicious).
Those are our must orders too! How good is this place? Never disappoints. Thanks for watching and commenting April! Hope Yu enjoyed the video 😄 Cheers, Sheena
Seeing those menus in Thai and using Google Translate was a very recent thing for us 😂😂
😂😂😂
Did you try Sweet Chilli Pt.Chev Restaurant?
We’ve never been! Worth a visit? What kind of cuisine is it? Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena

🤣🤣🤣🤣
I couldn’t stop giggling!
Too funny 🤪 Cheers, Sheena

Thanks for watching mate! Happy weekend! Cheers, Sheena
are you guys having a warmer winter then last year ??
It sure is warmer than being in the camper van like last year 😂 NZ being so long and thin makes for some pretty different climates. Last year we were done south much more during winter so it’s much colder down there. In Auckland at the moment we’re getting lows around 7-9 and highs of around 14-15 so not bad at all for mid winter. Thomas 😀🙌
@@ChasingaPlate yep. i was thinking at the camper. can you believe it's been a year ?? wooow
Not at all! Feels like just yesterday. Time sure does fly 😀
@@Alina_Valentina UNBELIEVABLE!
Im a quick swim across the Tasman Sea from NZ and we are definitely having a mild Winter here as well 20celcius and sunny today, not bad for middle of Winter👍

The Asian. Diaspora in NZ is so big..❤️❤️❤️
Incredible isn’t it?! 😍 we’re so lucky! Thanks for watching and commenting on this one mate, hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Sheena
you guys should try raw prawn thai style
Omg goong chae nam pla is one of my favourite dishes! But since we had raw prawn at the Japanese joint I didn’t want to overdose everyone with my raw prawn obsession so held back on ordering it at the Thai restaurant 😆 thanks for watching and commenting Lucy, hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers, Sheena
Aarrgh! Now I'm craving lamb! It's not a meat favored in my backwoods little town, so I foresee a 50+ mile round trip to get some. :/ Same for sushi. Fortunately, I have to go out to the "big town" tomorrow, so I'll add on a couple of stops to get those "exotic" foods. We're in the middle of a heat wave here, with a heat index of 115F (46C), so extra stops will have to be brief! Good thing my car has great air con...
Oh my goodness! I am so glad you have great air con MsKestrela! Stay cool and add an ice cream stop to your journey I say! 😅 Thanks thanks for watching and commenting on this one 💕 Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate Ahh, leave it to the lovely Sheena-ice-creama to point out the flaw in my plan! Fortunately, there's plenty of that in my lil nook in the woods. I can stop at the drive thru Dairy Queen in my little town, on the way home. Hugs tou you both!
@@MsKestrela 😍🍦yippee!
Definitely get something from the Thai menu if you want something different from other Thai restaurants, just ask them to translate 😋 most Thai ppl go there for it 🤫

There is a Uyghur restaurant close to me,tried a couple of dishes, they were delicious. One of my favourite is the Nepalise food, also real close,in fact,I am close to Albany Highway, the closest to Dominion road set up,3 miles of restaurants.

Couldn’t agree more mate! 💕 thanks for watching this one! Cheers, Sheena
Sashimi of Japan is run by Chinese and I find them not authentic enough in many ways. Good quality ingredients that poorly handled, license restaurant's pricing with a takeaway atmosphere. Lots of room for improvement, need lot more dedication and heart into it aye!!
Hi mate! Thanks for watching! The atmosphere reminds me of similar style restaurants in Tokyo 😆 Kinda rough and ready. The quality of the fish is great- they purchase from great suppliers which we love. Hope you’re staying sane in Level 3! Cheers, Sheena
Is the food sponsored or gifted or do you have to pay for everything 🤔
Hi mate, thanks for watching and commenting! Hope you enjoyed the video. This video is sponsored by the Dominion Road Business Association but all restaurants featured were chosen by us 😄 We always try and pay for our meals but there are some occasions where the restaurants refuse to take payment- we always disclose when this happens. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series! Cheers, Sheena
You need to put on a mask when you go into the kitchen.
This video was filmed a number of months ago under level one conditions. There was no mandate for mask wearing and no covid in the community. Thanks for watching. Thomas
That is not pie.we called them kaobaozi(烤包子).
Thanks for the traditional term mate! The restaurant calls them pies so we used their terminology 😄 And it is a pie really seeing as it’s a meat filling wrapped in pastry 😄 Cheers, Sheena
Why does she keep pronouncing Uyghur so wrong?
I’m pronouncing it the way Uyghur people do 😄 The way we often hear it pronounced in the West- wee-guh- is the Han Chinese pronunciation. Thanks for watching Andrew. Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate Amazing, I have extensive experience in China and I had no clue. Thanks for teaching me! My 12 year old son and I will be visiting Auckland in October and that alone makes me want to visit this restaurant.
