Honestly, I was expecting a lower score. I could tell RtB is not your type of song so, thank you for that.😉 They are marketed as pop (idol) band, partly because they chose to sign to an Idol label (RBW) and the general South Korean general public is not very fond of hard rock or alternative genres (and behavior). They commercially promote ballads or pop-rock (good ones too), but some really interesting songwriting and excellent - although heterogenous - music can be found in their B-sides. I agree that the production is very pop. Sometimes I think they (the label?) process/ produce a bit too much the studio versions of Onewe`s songs, when the instruments would suffice with minimal retouching. They can pull off this song very well live, including an acoustic version, which I definitely prefer. Thank you for your reaction! I like your style.
Nice review. I pretty much agree with you except I want to add something to this. I've said in past comments on previous videos that Rock has never really been mainstream in South Korea. This is something very important to understand when on the subject of South Korea Rock because as I keep requesting more South Korean Rock bands you are going to see this type of thing more and more. A South Korean Rock band no matter how hard they go with their sound will at some point put out songs that are "poppy" and/or they will put out a number of ballads. So it really doesn't matter how a South Korean Rock band is primarily marketed. If they want to actually sell, they will all at some point have to start catering in some way to most South Koreans which means less Hard Rock and more Soft Rock and/or Pop Rock. This is very different from Japan where Rock has not just been very popular for decades but to this day is still very much mainstream. This is why a number of South Korean bands go to Japan so that they can have freedom and do the sound they really want to do. Aurora is for sure the much better song and it showcases Onewe's talents far better than Rain To Be. It really demonstrates how interesting and unique their sound is but Aurora is too "Rock" for mainstream South Koreans. It also has a lengthy guitar solo and South Koreans don't like that either which is why the solo here is about half the length of Aurora's. They thankfully have some other tracks that are in the vein of Aurora but... they're all B-sides. After this I requested you react to Bursters' "Whenever You Call Me" which was after you heard "Lost Child" from them. Bursters' is Metalcore and "Lost Child" showcases that wonderfully but they made their debut with a more Pop Rock love song "Whenever You Call Me" for the very reason I just laid out. However, I think Bursters' "Whenever You Call Me" is still really good because they still maintained their Metalcore identity within a Korean mainstream Pop Rock context. I thought Bursters did some very impressive songwriting to make that work. I'm looking forward to seeing that reaction when it drops next week to see if you agree. 🙂
With three members doing the song writing, you get three different sounds for this group. I do think it is more a pop band. I will say that the entire album was great and one of my top albums of 2021
Good review! And 7.3, quite a high score.Thank you for that. I was actually surprised, given that the song is more pop sounding (one of the few pop sounding tracks in their discography actually). Onewe is marketed as an idol band, so maybe the company went with Rain To Be as title track because it will be more catchy for the general audience. Sadly, the band is scene is not so hyped there. Surprisingly, this song has become somewhat of a "trending" go-to song in South Korea when it rains hard hahaha. Also, Onewe has a habit of doing acoustic and/or (live) band versions of their songs, so Rain To Be has those to cater to the fans' preferences. Cool right?!
Please react to Xdinary Heroes they're a rly cool kpop/rock band Maybe it's more your style (Strawberry cake or happy deathday are rly good, they also released a new song Hair cut a few days ago)
Thanks for this review! I think ONEWE is being marketed somewhat more as a pop band, but it's a bit awkward because overall their discography has less of what I would think of as pop songs than other genres. However, I don't really know too much about music/genres, so it's possible I'm mistaken... Something kind of fun about many ONEWE songs is that they'll also record an acoustic version, which gives the song a different feel. So Rain To Be has an acoustic version as well (drummer using cajon, guitarist using acoustic guitar). I wonder what you'd think of ONEWE's song Montage_ as well! It has a pretty awesome guitar solo.
I didn't like the song but I didn't hate it either there were things I liked there were things I didn't I'm like a blowing tree 1 minute I blow to the left the other I blow to the right so I don't know about this one
