  • The little grebe, also known as the dabchick, is a small water bird belonging to the grebe family. At 23 to 29 centimeters (9 to 11.5 inches) in length, it is the smallest European member of its family. During the breeding season, the adult little grebe is unmistakable with its predominantly dark upperparts, rich rufous-colored neck, cheeks, and flanks, and bright yellow gape. In non-breeding and juvenile plumage, the rufous is replaced by a dirty brownish-grey hue. This charming bird is commonly found in open bodies of water across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Its distinctive breeding call is a trilled repeated “weet-weet-weet” or “wee-wee-wee,” reminiscent of a horse’s whinny. From time to time it dives inside the water to find food and comes out after some time at some another place.
