Most Expensive Durian: Black Thorn VS Mao Shan Wang VS Green BamBoo (Tekka Durian)

- We are going to try the Most Expensive Durian to tell you how nice it taste, how it look like and how to choose it. The most expensive King of Durians goes to Black Thorn Durian or some Durian owners called it 黑刺榴莲. This Durian is SGD$22/kg when in Singapore so one of it durians weights about 1.5kg hence one of it fetches at about SGD$33(USD$25).
This Durian has a very nice shape and texture to it. The durian is a perfect round shape ball and inside the meat are very big with the shell of the durian being concave so the whole durian has many seeds. The older the tree the more pale the meat will be. With the durian selling at such a high price the trees are mostly old trees with an age of above 8 years.
Comparing it with Mao Shan Wang Durian, Mao Shan only fetches at SGD$18/kg but I must say I love the creamy and sweet texture of Mao Shan compare to Black Thorn. The sweetness of both durians is equally sweet and both of the durians are strong flavour and taste. The difference however is the seeds. Mao Shan Wang has a smaller seed while Black Thorn has a bigger seed in general.
Green Bamboo or Tekka Durian when comparing to both of these durians has a more mild flavour so when you are eating all the strong durians, rememberer to eat the mildest one to the strongest one if not the taste will be different.

why does durian skin prickly?
well, because the durian tree grows branches and is very tall and can reach 5 - 15 meters, the fruits that are big and ripe will fall off by themselves. Even though the durian fell from a height, it would not break because the thorns stuck directly to the ground, not bouncing anywhere.
That is why durian skin is prickly.

Black Thorn : King of sweet durians ie red prawns, D101.
MSW : Bittersweet, creamy, pungent. King of this is Black Gold (my favourite).
Tekka : Bittersweet, creamy flowery taste. Not pungent.

top tip for Tekka @ Green Bamboo: always ask for old tree Tekka. and Tekka from south especially Johor is always the best compared to others like Pahang. the deeper the colour the better it is
MSW: yours was definitely top grade. the deeper colour signifies more bitter flavour
Black Thorn: originates from Penang but now already planted all over Malaysia especially in Pahang and Johor. I personally would smash it 4-5 times to the floor before opening to ensure it's soft and fully ripe, because like MSW, most BT never hit the ground when it dropped. so the ripening process will only be complete after 24 hours. some breeds tend to get ripe slower than others..
Wah you must be durian expert ah. Yeah totall agree with you, the first time we try Tekka it was so good that we come back again the week after, but the durian is terrible. We complained to the store owner and the next time came back he give us a super good Tekka

I suggest that u guys organise a visit to Penang during peak durian season in June if u haven't. Penang especially Balik Pulau district is quite famous for its unique high quality durians that are unavailable elsewhere. they have at least 50+ different varieties that u can try.

Which is the least pungent durian? But with a nice sweet creamy taste? Good for westerners?
May be can try D13 or D101, try to cover ur nose and try abit first, once get used to it, it is very nice to eat. To Asian people, we perceive durian to have sweet aroma, and strangely for most westerner it is the opposite.
Black thorn tastes a bit better than Musang king but the seeds are too big and the price is double of Musang king

I also think it is over rated, the taste is subpar compared to MSW, but it definitely have more edible meat then MSW, the shelves is very thin, deep hollow pocket which can hold alot more seed than most durian i have tried

Laughing Foodie I’m from Thailand , Musangking from young durian tree you got, I order Black torn from Batong Thailand 3.7 Kg l got durian meet lesser than 1 kg because all Black torn in Thailand is new come in, so alls Black torn tree in Thai are young that why l got more than 1 cm Black torn (Ochi) ‘s shell thickness.

Black Thorn - creamy texture, taste like cream, but you get sick of it after awhile.
Musang King - Creamy and more firm, bittersweet like XO, but do not ever eat this durian before testing any others first because it will make other durians taste like shit, that's all.

各人口味吧。 味道，视觉，口感，因人而异。黑刺真的味道浓郁kaw kaw，慢慢吃会发现层次感(起初甜味后面越来越浓)，吃了的感受，黏喉，干包。唯一缺点，有些种子是大粒的。

Hi Vincent, Mao Shan Wang is not D24. D24 has a much milder taste than Mao Shan Wang, it is thick and creamy and tends to be more sweet.
