Good job man! Most people don't realise what it takes to push a small boat to those speeds they can easily reach in their cars and how much harder the engine has to work. Personally, 50mph is about as fast as I care to go in the water.
I have been pushing for speed on a limited budget with outboards since I was in 7th Grade, I started out with a 3 point hydro with a 25 hp Evinrude, same routine as always look at RPM and performance and change accordingly. in 8th grade I moved up to a 10 ft GW Invader 2 person fiberglass running the same 25 hp Evinrude, that got old quickly. I then moved up to a 75 hp Merc short shaft of course and setup nicely with a 24" pitch brass prop I could get just a hair over 70 mph with one person in the boat. The only way to do that for me anyway was running with maybe the last 2 inches if the hull in the water, so yes its a balancing act at times and you need to look out for others wakes etc. to me it looks beautiful and normal as everyday, this fellow is running a very nicely setup boat and driving it accordingly!!! Great video. I have a 16 Larson 1978 , it needs a motor I’m trying to put a small block in it. It has a 4 cylinder I/o now. It’s a cool little boat. Thanks
That's insane, 99% of that hull is out of the water!!! The Mercury Racing 2.5 I think was rated at 260hp or 280hp, the sound of a screaming Merc racing outboard makes the hair on your neck stand up. You obviously had to firm up that transom to not only handle the weight but the power and torque that thing develops. Hell, I'd bet you had to do alot of work just to hang that motor on that boat... I'm guessing the boat before the mods was rated at a max of 150-200hp. Drive safe, a small boat going 80 is a pretty scarey ride.
LOL! Most of you people don't know Mike Ivy but for you armchair boat racers, he campaigned an XR Allison in Modified Production in DSRA and ODBA for a couple years. The boat is for sale now but after driving that boat well over 100 I think this is probably just his sleeper for Sunday afternoon.
Everyone has their own apinion. I weight around 300lb with my 10lb camera, The shot from inside the boat with the GPS showed only 80MPH, mind you that was with BOTH of us in the boat. The shots of the boat running with only Mike driving were actually around 82!!!!! Thank You!
I never understood the need to go fast on boats. As a retired 747-400 driver, I love to be on my boat. I love to cruise, have a cold on, cook something on the bar by and never felt the need to go fast. If I do feel the urge to go somewhere fast, if fire up my Baron and go. For those-a Baron is a twin engine, 6 seat airplane. But I guess that is what makes this world go around. We all have different taste.
I owned a 17' Glastron swallow-V that I mounted a 150 Mercury outboard to, w/ a 22" cupped prop and that boat would fly! After some work on the carbs and some port work, that boat would do over 100 MPH, no problem. I was making a run from Long Beach to Avalon Bay, Catalina Island and had it wide open on foggy morning w/ water like glass, when I tagged a shark and destroyed that outboard and sent the boat airborne, almost flipping it right about the halfway point. Had to call the Coast Guard for help. No fun that weekend.
With a 2.5 im surprised the pig aint faster, 80 dont make it a race boat but where i come from it may keep up with a few fishing boats and half of the aluminum john boats.
Thanks for responding.... That boat has a fiberglass grillage system for the stringers.. I know that will be in perfect condition.. Was the transom rebuilt or was it still in good shape.. The only reaosn why I ask is because it is encapsulated wood.
if you say it'll run 80, thats good enough for me. thats fast in that type of boat! thats fast in any type of boat as far as that goes. has the engine been worked on? and also, wear a life jacket man! a kill switch wouldnt hurt either.
It's fast but I don't know about stable, don't think it would take much to lose that little baby. I agree with the last comment, life jacket with kill switch wouldn't go astray. Wouldn't mind a pair of those Mercs on my hull though.
I'm surprised that 2.5 only pushed it to 80mph. Is that a 260hp or carb'd 2.5? The cowl looks to have EFI on it, so 80 might be a baseline to get even more speed. You might want to try a little more motor height. Our fishing boat dry hulls @ 850 we're running a 2.4BP with a 28P too and top out at 88.1mph... Good luck, and one other thing, you might want to consider some brand of PFD if not an impact jacket.
I'm working on an 86 WINNER ski boat right now and the transom in it is DEFINATELY made of wood as this one is rotten. The rest of the boat is as solid as a rock though.
