It's very interesting that some companies completely out of the established fg circles in the 90s just put out these kind of games out of the blue. Kabuki Klash, Waku Waku 7, Kaiser Knuckle, Gundam Wing (SNES), etc.
I use to play this on the arcades when i was young, no joke, everyday until the sad day they change the machine ... love the stages, the supers are really easy and fun to do, getting your weapons on your opponent face is a awesome feeling xD, this game is incredible
I actually played this game in the arcade back in '95-'96! (R.I.P. to The Game Room in Citrus Heights, CA). I was a Manjimaru main - and decent. Kabuki (Danjuro) is a fun degenerate too. The whole cast is actually really cool tbh. This game made me interested in the Tengai Makyō series and developer Red Company as a whole - especially when Sakura Taisen hit a year later. This game also has some top-tier voice talent. Manto (the ape boss)was voiced by legend Shigeru Chiba (Lau Chan in Virtua Fighter & F.A.N.G. in SF5...so yeah, Capcom eventually got your boy LOL). The soundtrack is great too! You didn't even use Tsunade's spinning ax slam move!
Listen! THIS MADE MY DAY!!!!! I helped submit combos for a FAQ on this game and everything. Beat it on one credit with all the characters. Played it with my arcade crew. Kabuki Klash is great....until you play Yagumo and corner people with down, down+C. Great game nonetheless!
Whoa! Blast of nostalgia! As a kid, my uncle gave me a bunch of Neo Geo roms to play and I always picked this one over Samsho because I loved how colorful the art style was! Characters were very expressive and backgrounds were so fun to look at! Glad to see you play it!
This game is a spin-off of the Tengai Makyo/Far East of Eden series, a series of RPG games by Hudson. Sadly this was the only game in the series to ever leave Japan.
I think it has to do with that weird western reluctance with jrpgs in the 90s. Even a few non asian based rpgs were skipped. So this game really would have no chance. But funnily it was accepted as a fg, since it was the hyped genre of the time.
i really like the style of this game and the way it doesn’t take itself very seriously. seems like fighting games of this sort aren’t made anymore, if i’m wrong though could someone point me to a few good examples that i could try out! thanks 🙏🏻
One of my fave fighters on the Neo Geo that I own and play quite a bit, funny enough I was JUST playing this before supper and wondering if J Wong ever played it, this answers my question.
Never seen this one before looks like it's got a lot of fun quarks seems like a game you would have found on a 90s neogeo machine in the back of a 7-Eleven. I see why you compared it to samurai showdown but it's look reminds me of world heroes.
My man is questioning a samurai armor robot after a giant yellow monkey summoned a stampede of mini horses and gazelles at him. 🤣 Game looks super dope! 👍
I used to play this on Neo-Geo emulator when I was a kid, the last bosses are integrated in my head specially the 1st one, the cheap monkey that takes tons of my hp when the match starts. this and Last blade series were my favorites during that time.
Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru are characters featured in a tale called Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari, so yes, its folklore. Perhaps there are more references in this game, but I am not sure.
@@carlosaugusto9821 indeed, so many confusions with the names back then. The cool part is that currently the japanese folklore is more know due the globalization and now can get names that are more accurate
@@carlosaugusto9821 Actually the misspelling is an intentional joke. The premise behind the Far East of Eden series is that it's a JRPG series based on early Western midsunderstandings and mistranslations about Japanese culture and folklore. They claim to be based on a fictional series of books by Dr. P.H. Chada, a fictional Western author. This is also why the art style has a cartoony look to it.
@@GELTONZ They really just went all-in with the wacky aspects, even at the start. I mean, the 1st game played itself somewhat straight, then the Manjimaru game added Kabuki to the fray, giving it extra levity, then Fuun Kabuki Den exists to just go all out wacko with the story, visuals and just show off the graphic capabilities of the PCE with the Super CD, moreso than Manjimaru And to make things even CRAZIER, there's Apocalypse IV, which takes place in a silly and very Japanese take on the United States during the Wild West era. In fact, I remember that there was even a goof in the script where natives were called Indians in the Saturn version, which was fixed in the PSP release, since they went for the Japanese equivalent for "Redskins", leaning into the whole historic misunderstandings aspect
There was a Far East of Eden fighter for the PC-Engine Arcade CD Rom called Kabuki Den Fighter. Not as good as Kabuki Klash graphically, but still fun to play for an early 90s title. :)
I had a neo geo cd… it was a 1x cd-rom so the loading was horrible. Imagine 30-45sec of loading for every round. Most times the loading was longer than the round
The graphics remind me of Golden Axe in the arcade. Very cool looking. Something about the characters not having any black outlines or much black in general always looks pleasing to me.
Played this arcade that Monkey was my bane, the other bosses felt more easy after that. Back then I didn't play as axe girl, now that Mai from GG become one of my fave characters to main I'm interested into play her.
There was a time in the 90s fg scene that somehow the companies turned flashes into a trend. Like early Marvel games didn't have it, but XvSF had a lot of flashes, and it was just toned down in MvSF and MvC, but it was still there. It was a kind of mid 90s thing. And definitely NeoGeo overused it at the time. By the very late 90s, only KoF kept the flashes - red flashes even, which are even worse imo. And the flashes lasted until the early 00s. So it was a trend over the mid 90s, but that only KoF kept it for a long time.
I watched a video on youtube, someone use yogumo to win every single match with perfect score, include against Lucilfer, the hardest boss. This is one of my fav arcade game back in my childhood
Guardian Heroes is a couple bucks on game stores (steam, microsoft, etc). Was a game on Sega Saturn. Side scrolling, multi-lane brawler (final fight/golden axe) with rpg leveling elements and street fighter style move inputs. One of the most fun games ever made, imo.
I remember discovering this game at my local pizza place as a kid. I was awe struck by the gorgeous art and animations. It wasn't until recently that I was able to discover what the game was. I thought I dreamt it up. =P
I remember playing this back when I was a kid in the early 2000's on a pc (apparently there were emulators already at that time my cousin who donated the pc told me)
Never heard of this game before but definitely an underrated game like u can play it in an arcade and the way u presented this game is so God like great job my boy ur definitely my inspiration and idol of a gamer I really want to game it up with you someday
They had this one in a mall near my house in the early 2010s next to Street Fighter The Movie The Game. IDK what the hell was going on in that place, but I wish they never stopped.
i played this a lot back then with my cousins, together wid some other old neo geo fighting games like old kofs(99,2k,2k2 vanilla), gowcaizer, wakuwaku7, kizuna encounter, rbff, lb2, and many others(except samsho coz we preferred lb/lb2). Fun times of childhood.
I loved this game as a teen, it was so charming. Pity, it is so underrated that most don't even know. And apparently, there's other genre games of this franchise
Makes me wish there was interest (back then or also now) to make fg versions of rpgs - but more famous rpgs. I think the latest case was Persona 4 fg by Arcsys, but it's old.
I love it Kabuki klash is so cool Tsunade does so much damage and I like the monkey boss he looks like he's super Saiyan and he did Ryu shoryuken the last boss was tough he's looks like a gargoyle from back in the day good job Justin
Back in the day, I could only beat this game with Yagumo and the girl with the dog, that are the only characters with infinite weapon throw; only way I could find to beat Luci at the end.
That game was on my neigbor arcades and I played a lot, I remember the manjimaru was the more fun for the combos but i also play orichimaru and yakumo at very good level
Justin, What you should also try out its another cool obscure fighter but has a JoJo + roger rabbit + looney tunes feel, and its developed by Aorn and Published by EA only in Japan its called Rabbit
Now this is content brother...hit that like plz ppl we need more if this from big J...n do more of the characters..don't do one play threw with one character n go to the next game.no no we need more MORE

This is one of the most beautiful games on the system. The animation is amazing and the license is very well known especially in Asia.

It was a popular franchise in Japan specifically.
This is actually a fighting game spinoff of a jrpg series called Far East of Eden (Tengai Makyo in Japan).😀
Also Hudsonsoft made the game not SNK.

Neo Geo CD Kabuki Klash is on a whole other level. Like, the OST is just like a mainline Tengai Makyou game with how much it hits different
i always wonder why you play the classic SNK games on LEVEL 4 instead of MVS mode which is what the arcades were usually set to

Day 31:
This series of desperate attempts to bring an underrated series of fighting games to relevancy have reached one full month already.
And this day is a very special one indeed.

Five years ago, the then untitled Fighting EX Layer demo was shown to the public, half in jest, half seriously.
And, guess what?
