  • Today we are taking a look at a brand new Parkside Professional tool available from Lidl, the PPSK 40 A1 plasma cutter (Plasmaschneider) with integrated compressor, priced at €199. This allows you to use the tool anywhere there is power, without the need of shop air and hoses! Basically you can cut steel 12mm thick with just a power plug, cool! The internal design looks quite good, they are using an IGBT switched full bridge forward converter which is a very robust design to run 40A max cutting output. The compressor is a 2 cylinder type, made mostly of plastic and aluminum, so maybe not the most sturdy, but for this application perfectly fine.
    All in all a decent new tool. Check out the user manual here:

    Thanks a lot for explaining the Machine in detail! I do have one of them and i'm thinking about the possibility (with a Pilot-Arc-Torch instead the original one) if it wouldn't be possible to get a real Pilot-Arc instead of the spark-one with the original Torch? When i understood you right, it looks like they have the necessary circuit already build in?

      Pilot arc means having a ground (or really a +) at the torch tip. This machine uses a HV start (the spark you see), but it isn't pilot arc as it has to get close to the workpiece to make contact with + so the arc can form. If you connect a pilot arc torch to this tool it will work fine, and you will have real pilot arc!

    I wonder what that spark gap will look like on a spectrum analyser, seeing as the instructions say that the EMC isn’t suitable for home use.

    • @engjds
      @engjds 9 місяців тому +1

      Spark gap measurements on spectrum analysis are very messy from my experience on violet wands, so too the waveforms, you think they just operate like a switch, but in reality they bounce all over-like off-noise-off-noise.

    Wenn ich das richtig verstanden habe läuft der Kompressor-Lüfter nur wenn der Kompressor läuft und der Elektronik-Lüfter dauerhaft?
    Dann kann ich den ja einfach leise bekommen indem ich dem Elektroniklüfter einem Thermoschalter spendiere und eventuell noch zusätzlich mit einem Relais den Taster abgreife, damit der beim Betrieb direkt mit läuft.
    Der Thermoschalter funktioniert bereit bei meinem Schweißgerät hervorragenden.

    It would be interesting to know the compressor power use, if you have a dc current clamp meter? It will help me choose a mini compressor. I do have a full size one but wouldnt be practical to use it with the plasma.

      I put it away a long time ago, but looking at similar looking compressors, I'd say ~200W (maybe between 125-300W), that should give you a good reference point I hope!

    Thank you, the video its very informative, i was just wondering if you could help me. I purchased one of these 2nd hand and when i tried it, it was striking an arc but the compressor wasn't coming on.
    i took it apart and found the red wire going to the compressor was frayed and disconnected, so I repaired that, but now i get a red power light on the on/off switch, but now nothing comes on. Do you know if there's an internal fuse or a safety cut-off ? or any other ideas what the issue may be?

      I have sorted the problem of the cutter not turning on it was a dry joint on the board where teh power comes in, however the compressor still does not come on, after taking it apart i found that the stator in the motor is burnt out, so i need a new stator, would you happen to know where i could buy a new compressor or a new stator

    Hello ! Super vid! What I make for compressor life time to long? Clean? And lubricant?

    • @GadgetEngineering
      @GadgetEngineering  2 роки тому +2

      Not much to do unfortunately, the piston "rings" are Teflon so will certainly wear with use, and I'm not sure what kind of lubricant is good for Teflon bearing components, you might think to grease the bores, but the pistons will wipe away any grease or lubricant very quickly. I would be nice to have replaceable pistons (as the Teflon ring is part of the plastic/metal piston itself) but that is not a part you can buy, at least not from Lidl/Grizzly tools. Maybe you get lucky on Ali but I wouldn't know where to start looking and it looks like a fairly custom compressor to have replacement parts. Unfortunately it is a disposable item, you'd be better off getting the non compressor version and then using your own oil lubricated compressor that you can service.

    Awesome review! Do you think that it would be possible to upgrade the output current somehow to let's say 50A? I was thinking like swapping the IGBTs for higher rated ones since the output diodes are rated for 60A. But I'm not sure if that would be sufficient or if anything else would limit the output current

    • @GadgetEngineering
      @GadgetEngineering  2 роки тому +3

      Tricky, I don't think the IGBT's are the limiting factor. The microcontroller driving the whole transformer circuit is monitoring and controlling current. Specifically it takes the input of the front panel potentiometer, where you set the Amperage, and makes sure to drive the IGBTs in such a fashion that they induce that specific current in the transformer. If you could either trick or reprogram the micro to a higher amperage, it would try to drive the IGBTs to achieve such higher amperage. Now, the transformer has a limited capacity, and I believe it has been sized so that 40/45A makes it close to/at saturation. So even if you reprogrammed the micro (it's a marked off the shelf SMPS driver chip, if its not in the video I'll look it up and tell you the model number) magnetically you couldn't achieve more current. I'm sure the IGBTs could handle 70A for short bursts without blowing, as the heatsinking is decent. So from my perspective, you would need to upgrade to a higher amperage transformer (bigger, lower resistance coil), then upgrade the IGBTs and diodes, and program the micro for this higher current (might be as simple as changing the potentiometer on the front panel, or maybe a max current programming resistor on the PCB). If you're interested in analyzing this further let me know and I can get you more info. Cheers!

      @@GadgetEngineering thanks for the extensive reply! I don't own this plasma cutter yet - I got a good black friday deal on the PMSG multi welder so I got that one first :) - but I'm thinking about getting the plasma too and if there would be a (cheap) way to get more current out of it then it would be an absolutely kickass machine. If you have the time and knowledge I'm sure an upgrade like this would make a great video a lot of people would be interested in.

    • @GadgetEngineering
      @GadgetEngineering  2 роки тому +1

      @@1ltscorpion Thanks, as I said before though, achieving a worthwhile increase of power would mean pretty much a total redesign. If it were only hacking a microcontroller or something that would be sensible (I think with this device some microcontroller mods may give you 5-10% increase, but not sure its worth it), but for a real increase in power you'd have to replace IGBT's, control logic, diodes, and inductors, which is not realistic in this chassis. 45A/12mm in steel I think is already very good performance for this price class, and I doubt any of us 'amateurs' will ever need to cut anything more significant. Anybody doing such major work would certainly prefer a 'professional' class machine. I just don't see the need for more power, but maybe you can suggest your use case where you need more cutting performance? Cheers!

      The circuits and components are all matched for a maximum of 40 amps output which is respectable. Altering output devices won't change the controller.

      @@GadgetEngineering That was the finest analysis of any particular unit I have ever witnessed. I did have a question though. The toroid , is it a choke or is it acting as a transformer? Absolutely wonderful breakdown. I am messing around with high frequency high voltage being able to produce way higher amperage when coupled with the right capacitors. I have succeeded in blowing holes in things but sustained plasma is a bit away.

    • @GadgetEngineering
      @GadgetEngineering  2 роки тому

      No clue, it's wired into the compressor start relay, but recall that one pin is not even connected, so might have been the idea to add an additional compressor interlock that was abandoned, but forgot to remove the connector from the BOM so it was populated. The whole PCB is a bit weird as far as connectors go, the 2.54 header pins they use as jumpers they just soldered two pins together, when there was no reason not to just connect the track on the PCB, as the circuit is fixed and necessary, and there is no 'option' to select between...

    • @GadgetEngineering
      @GadgetEngineering  2 роки тому

      That is a tricky proposition, these things are only sold in Europe by Lidl, and even though there are Lidl stores in the US, they don't sell the same products, especially not the tool line. You could get it off Ebay, but the voltage would be wrong (240V vs 120V) and the customs duty would make it uneconomical. I'm sure Harbor Freight has a similar cutter available, as this is just a rebranded Chinesium machine. Probably can get one locally off Ebay just searching 'compressor plasma cutter' for ~$200.

      The USA Tool mark is monopolized by Conglomerates. Lidl wouldn't be allowed to offer these tools as it would disrupt the profit margins and consumer would realise how much ripped out off they are.
