Despite having been with Canon for 30 years from EOS 3 to most of the EOS 5Ds and now R5, I was really close to jump ship but I had to buy my R5 when the Z8 had been announced but not released. I wish I could have jumped ship, I do like my R5 but I hate Canon new strategy of not supporting their APS-C line up, the inexistant mid range lens line up (no weather sealing except on L lenses!) and the insane price of L lenses ... and did I mention the flashes (and they are not even that good, thank you Godox!). I am also not someone who obsesses about image quality, the 5D were very good, the R5 is very good but the Sony sensors are better and factually a generation or two in advance on Canon. Lastly £3,499 for a 70-200 is insanity, pricing us so much higher than the USA is insulting. I really hope they continue to lose market shares and that their strategy fails and that they wake up because as long as they don't feel threatened. Nikon trying to come back from the nearly dead is killing it right now, on the other hand Canon thinks we are idiots and cash cows and will buy their stuff regardless of how it performs or how it is priced. That being said, the second hand market of Canon R L lenses is showing huge price drops vs retail which is a bad sign for Canon.
Canon's APS-C support was awful even back in their DSLR era. They pushed the 7D very hard but it never had proper quality glass for it other that "just go buy L lenses"
Why is the UK being charged a premium for these lens's. Makes you want to buy a US one, which works out to be £2308 plus shipping. Even with import tax it would still be a darn sight cheaper than 3.5k
That auto focus was really fast, and it seems packed with features, internal zoom, parfocal. Seems genuinely excellent, but 4k is eye wateringly expensive. This is a you need it kind of lens.
I am happy Canon did return to an internal zooming with this lens. And also MUCH shorter throw between 70 and 200mm. The previous RF 70-200 had too long throw which made impossible to zoom from one end to another with just one move of a thumb.
Another fine review Thank you. Firstly let’s be clear this is not really a lens for the amateur market, but made for the professional video cameraman working in TV. And as it’s a Canon zoom lens it’s never going to be cheap because they make some of the best zoom lenses available in the industry. As for this lens it’s part of a set of prime & zoom lenses which at the moment makes up about 5 lenses altogether, Secondly the are two more bits for this lens system a zoom motor at £1000 approximately, although Canon have not released this product yet and a control box with cable attachment also at £1000 approx , that fits on the pan handle still to come. As for using this lens for normal still photography work, frankly you are not going to gain much considering the high cost involved even for the actual lens reviewed here. However it would be interesting to see reviews of the rest of these video lenses.
That zoom module you mentioned costs an incredible THOUSAND POUNDS, canons pricing is sheer greed, im close to jumping to nikon or sony, at least they have 3rd lenses which canon aren't allowing
Amazing review as always. Will you test it on the R7 as well, maybe with a teleconverter? That would make it even more useful for wildlife and sports photography.
curious how much correction does this one need through software? I have the 24-105 and it looks great after correction. But I admit I'm not thrilled with the direction canon is going depending on software so much. As camera conspiracy guy said, has canon forgotten how to make good lenses?! For the expense they really shouldn't need much correction...
It would be interesting to report how its IQ compares to the old EF 70--200 f/2.8 IS L that was also internal zoom as you probably reviewed that earlier lens.
@rollandelliott The Digital Picture writes this in their review of the RF lens: "In the image quality comparison, the RF lens handily bests the EF lens. The EF option has noticeably less peripheral shading, especially at 200mm. With fewer lens elements, the RF lens is considerably more flare resistant."
@ Tnx I appreciate the info I have the EF and flaring is a weak spot esp when shooting against the sun. So a great plus. But I am also interested in sharpness, microcontrast, resolution, rendering. I suppose I need to look at the charts side by side at the 70 and 200 ends to see if there is any significant improvement.
My experience is that RF lenses are sharper than EF in general. Only 2 RF lenses I didnt find sharp were the 28-70 and dirt cheap 50 f1.8. Atleast my EF lenses are softer, slower and less accurate focus.
the perfect versatile lens. for the event shooter it has a great range and i love this bokeh with sharpness. $4000 might be ok for what it can do for PROs at 2.8
This is what I've been waiting for in a 70-200 RF mount. I'm glad they finally got around to it! But I still want to see how it compares to my 70-200 L EF USM L Mark III. There might not be a reason to upgrade.
I used the first version RF lens on my R6 ii on Saturday and saw zero improvement, optically or AF wise, over my EF 70-200 ii. This new one though, would be a great upgrade if it cost in the region £2k or just over. £3.5k is non starter for a 70-200 for me.
I suspect the dissemination of these pre-production samples to youtubes is a clever ploy to avoid having the image quality of their lenses scruitinised too carefully. Probably fine for some youtubers, but this channel's appeal is the very formulaic approach to lens testing, so I must respectfully voice my disappointment at your deviation from the formula. Hopefully we can get a proper review soon.
I just don't understand as to WHY anyone would want the Black version of this lens...mind you, once I do go up to the RF mount, I'll just adapt the EF version iii 😉
I hope you'll test it with the $1300 pz-e2b adapter. Not sure why that should be a separate item and reviews from buyers are generally negative. The zoom buttons should be integral. I had assumed that the Z meant built in zoom motor, not just some teeth on the side.
@ they aren’t lol, they’re less than half the price of Canon or GM lenses, that’s fair for the great performance and full metal build, very similar to Sigma I Series which gives equivalent performance without proper weather sealing
There seems to some purple fringing in highlight areas example - hair of model, lid of the bottle, typical classic Canon colors like that of FD lenses.
@@EdvardKALEN Easy, break the bank or switch to another brand. Sigma's current RF lenses are underwhelming and not all their EF lenses are superb either.
Morning everyone! The lens's PRICE is a little lower than first expected: $2,999 in the US, and £3,449 in the UK.

This is the lens they should have released in the first place…they seem to be doing a good bit of that lately…all of these trip ups! 😅
RF lenses, sickeningly expensive..though undoubtedly high qulity 🔥

Lenses and cameras nowadays aren't meant for normal people, and you can thank phone manufacturers for that
