I remember hearing Linnell say that his neverending quest was to write the perfect pop song - awfully humble, this, from a guy who's done it upwards of 40 times. And here's one more.
Great comment! Well phrased. Clever, true, and stuff like that. Great job!
which 40
I'll always be better at writing and playing and singing that Linnel and Hack FLABSBURG. I sang in Slam bamboo. Perhaps you've heard of it.

For anyone curious: You forget your dreams as a deliberate part of the waking process. It's related to sleep paralysis in a funny way. If you want to remember them, you have to remain perfectly still when you wake up (don't move even a single muscle) and immediately run through the dream in your mind. It's fu***** difficult, but it works. I promise.
(there are other methods for remembering dreams too, like dream journaling and wake-mindfullness)
Dream journals 100% for those who can't otherwise. I used to do it when younger and it really helped, it's hard to stick to though. Just reflecting and remembering is easier said than done.
Recently I’ve started writing down my dreams to remember them. The only problem is that I do it while I’m still dreaming. I’ll realize “oh! I’m about to wake up. I should summarize this while I’m here so I don’t forget it!” And then I wake up and if I’m lucky I will remember the summary, but most times I just remember that I tried to write it down in my dream.
just remember it
@@benonaru Genius. Why didn't I think of that? 🤣
the earliest dream i remember was from 7 years ago jesus christ😭
yknow _waking up to this_ makes it all the more relatable

Completely seriously, I've never seen a video that so incaspsulates depression (or at least my experience with it). The blank staring at your surroundings, not being able to do things that should be easy like turning on a light switch or washing dishes, the sudden flashes of pain and thoughts of death amidst the mundane...even the character here, dressed in a way that alienates them, makes movement difficult, and disconnects them from any obvious humanity.
Then that's contrasted with such a comparatively bittersweet song! It all pairs together beautifully and it's perfect. This is seriously powerful stuff.
I like the spark of hope at the end too! Not to assume things but the smashing of the trophy etc reads to me as possibly representing the band letting go of their past and bouts of fame and finding freedom and joy in that. In this interpretation, "the dream" takes on a double meaning and could be said past.
Ugh it's just so good 🥹
Well that's put into words what was so uncomfortably familiar about this.
Wonderful flavours of classic Giants, but fresh and as deep as ever. Johns definitely still got it.
After hearing this song (and watching this video), I'm pretty sure they wouldn't agree with you.
@@arigadatred5395 what
Liar. Stop it
@@LukeHennisch You want to know my reasoning? Alright, here you go.
The message of the song seems pretty obvious to me. It's about an artist whose success has failed to make them happy, and who feels their creativity has been lost. When they were young, they had dreams of fame and fortune, of making beautiful things. Dreams they achieved (the trophy), but that failed to make them happy.
Now, they don't know how to be happy or creative anymore, because they don't know what their dreams are, or what they were supposed to be. They can't recall their creativity, because they can't recall their will to create at all. At the end, they destroy their instruments (their artistic tools, -one of which is an accordion)- and their trophy, hoping for a fresh start, even with the specter of death looming over them. It's really the accordion and the musical references to old, popular tmbg songs (Birdhouse especially) that makes me think this could be about them. Reminds me of some Dmitry Shostakovich piece that he wrote when he was considering killing himself, which contained musical references to some of his most popular works, almost as though he was reflecting on the successes of his life at what he thought might be the end of it (which it wasn't, he died later of lung cancer I think).
Of course, this might just be them telling another depressing tale as usual, but it also might not. It's really none of my business either way, and my opinion as *just as invalid as anyone else's.* Hopefully none of them read the comments.
@@arigadatred5395 that’s a cool interpretation, but I think it’s just as obvious as forgetting the dream you had after you woke up
I'm tearing up. Same "most of my memories are bad" feelings.
1:48 I absolutely love how the flappy wiggle fingers molest the guitar like they're somehow responsible for the curt, energetic guitar chords happening at that instant.
TMBG consistently make the happiest sad songs.
Right you are.
Yes, but to me, this one has come to feel happier than sad. I have fallen in love with how he describes the feeling the dream left him with. Forgetting a wonderful dream can be so disappointing, but the optimism he describes feels so beautiful. 😊
GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME
Upbeat tempo and depressing lyrics. Everything I want in a song.
I don't know what makes the bulb explode, but that's the way the video ends.
damn
Did you just-
That's what I was thinking too hehe
I was recommended this because I like tally hall. Definitely great Recommendation, love the song.
This is the best tune released from BOOK so far, without a doubt.
"My daily life doesn't interest me, it's a never-ending litany of pain and ennui..." God that's perfect.
onwe
Right you are.
I love how Lutador is smashing all of the old symbols of TMBG throughout the years. The ones I noticed are the "Best Rock Video" trophy, a bursting lightbulb (echoes of the Birdhouse video), coffee cup, keyboard, guitar, accordion, and of course.... skull head.
I ... can't believe I didn't pick up on that!
The birdhouse lightbulb is what made the video for me
the part of the hand that's being sawed of are the *fingertips*
Once Again, They Might Be Giants come out with a song that fits in perfectly with my life.
This song sounds like the Sequel to "Why Must I Be Sad" qwq
sequel because mid-song John feels love for himself due to "the simple fact his mind could concoct such an incredible thing"
Love this song, such a bop, and easy to identify with. It hurts to see the Birdhouse lightbulb exploding, but the yellow protagonist seems to be liberated and happy so all good
I feel like this music video is a commentary on how the band has left their past of more "mainstream" success behind and have reinvented themselves into something new. They woke up from a dream.
@@floridaflamingogirl3119 yeah, finally getting off of the successes of their past and starting something new! (not to say that stuff wasn't great as well my favorite albums are The Else and Nanobots)
This album is going to be amazing
right? wall to wall bangers so far
No but you might be!
This song resonates with me so much it hurts...
Oh. My. Fuck. This is fantastic. I love it when they rock out like this. Classic Linnell style meandering melody that has the a certain kind of bounce to it that NO ONE else has. They've really withstood the test of time; I never feel like they're just going through the motions, like Aerosmith. Nor do I have any effing idea why I've used the composers of "Rag Doll" as the benchmark. Man, this grooves! If ya'll are reading this, then listen up John Flansberg: I want to apologize for something that happened in 1995 ir 1996. It was on July 4th. It was at a fireworks show at Piermont Pier, NY. You were there with your family. I was 19. I'd just discovered TMBG a year prior and you were Gods to me. I saw you and started yellinf Cowtown lyrics. As if that would make you want to introduce yourself! You got freaked out a bit and distanced yourself. My bad. In anycase, I lost intetest in TMBG around 2001, and then 2 years ago, I checked back in, expecting to see ya'll have succumbed to the sad determonism of being a band that lost the creative spark, a parody of yourselves. You gave defied fate. You've left Aerosmith, RATT, Vinny Vincent, and Slaughter in the dust
and I’m jackdets
Leaving RATT in the dust....future Linnell lyric?
I would also like to apologise for freaking him out on tumblr once.
Lol. Why are you comparing the incomparable? You must NEVER leave TMBG again to prove your worthiness.
Go touch grass PLEASE
I'm glad I paused it and checked what the record is at 2:45 in this video. It's "If You Are But a Dream" by Frank Sinatra. Nice. That had to cost a little bit of money. Maybe they switched it out for a cheaper one that they actually smashed.
Ironically a youngJohn Linnell was in my dream last night. We were in this college class that was decorated in a bunch of different themes. I remember big beautiful paintings, chandeliers, a grand piano, and then some modern sculptures. And the teacher wouldn’t tell us what class it was either. So we were all kinda just on our own to figure it out. I hear someone playing the piano and I turn around and it’s John Linnell playing Summer, Highland Falls by Billy Joel.
They say that these are not the best of times, but they're the only times I've ever known...
@@paulconniezickler9346 Aahh yes
Paused it for the smashed album: "If You Are But a Dream" by Frank Sinatra.
I cannot wait for BOOK, the song itself was absolutely brilliant. Along with this, I surely wasn't the only one who spotted many references from Birdhouse in your Soul, Puppet Head and John Henry?
theres defiitely musical refs to birdhouse and statue.
2:57 sounds like a reference to Hey Ocean!'s "Sleepwalker" as well. Maybe just a coincidence, since that's a different band entirely, but the themes of the two songs are similar.
The melody closely mirrors Linnell's "Montana" at one point. In particular, it's the section of Montana where he sings, "From the beginning there was something about it staring me
In the face I should have guessed it right away...." It's identical but for the final chord of the progression: "I Can't Remember" resolves on one of those uniquely deceptive / unexpected chords. I'm not going to allow myself to mull over the possibility of a connection between this and Montana, bit I'm sure that somewhere in that metaverse in Linnell's head, there is one
What's the connection to Puppet Head?

And even though I can't explain it, I already know how great it's
Why are all of tmbgs' songs so relatable
"My daily life doesn't interest me,
It's a never-ending litany of pain and ennui.
This waking nightmare is driving me mad,
And I wish I could remember the dream that I had"
Damn son
haha, what kind of nerd has ever felt like that? ha ha... I'm not crying, you're crying. hey, this song is super catchy!
1:12 is my favorite part in the song, I love how he says photographic accuracy
And remember it with votagraficakurazee
Holy crap. Ive only been really getting into them more lately, and trying to catch up on their discography. This song is amazing, wonderfully depressing and melodic.
Enjoy! Their recent albums are full of underappreciated hits.
This is one of the most relatable songs for me that I've heard in a long time, but I wish it wasn't
Nailed it. Lol
I can't remember the dream that I had last night
but I woke with delight and excitement and then
when I tried to remember the dream that I had last night
it was gone but the feeling I had in the dream stayed on
When I'm awake and I look around me
I can faithfully report everything that I see
Most of my memories tend to be sad
So I wish I could remember the dream that I had
I can't remember the dream that I had last night
if I could I would write it out, underline the highlights
of the dream that would now redefine my life
be a new roadmap, affirmation and guiding light
When I'm awake I know all that I see
And remember it with photographic accuracy
Most of my memories tend to be bad
And I'm sad I can't remember the dream that I had
Why can't I remember it when
I can't
Forget
Unpleasant thoughts I want to push them away
They creep
Like weeds
Like weeds that cover all the flower beds
I can't remember the dream that I had last night
but the simple fact that my mind could concoct such a thing
as the incredible dream that I had last night
is a clue to the key to a door to a world like that
My daily life doesn't interest me
It's a neverending litany of pain and ennui
This waking nightmare is driving me mad
And I wish I could remember the dream that I had
When I'm awake I know all that I see
And remember it with photographic accuracy
All of my memories make me feel bad
And I'm sad I can't remember the dream that I had
Why can't I remember the dream that I had
Wish I could go live in the dream that I had
THX xd
Thank you for sharing the lyrics that emphasize the beauty of this tune.

This song is a pretty good representation of the mental state during the covid-19 pandemic. Good job.
The "can't remember the dreams that they had" gang unite!
I heard this song on the radio of all places. I was thinking I must have heard it before from the last millennia, or I somehow missed it. Then I got sad thinking about the bygone era, but now I see this is a new song, a really great song at that. Sad but uplifting.
I'm making this my alarm in the morning so that maybe I can remember to remember my dreams

This is so wonderful. The circular philosophical rhymes and lyrics are just like thoughts spinning around in my head. Perfect TMBG. Thanks John and John.
This album is looking to be one of the best things they've put out in the past decade.
This is by far the best Book track so far.
Well done Johns (pl). Another 10/10 pop song. Damn.
Oh hell yes. A new TMBG song and it already comes with a new Alex Italics video?
And it's one of those tmbg songs that doesn't click with me until near the end of the first listen... which is usually a sign that it's going to become one of my favorites.
See... if you keep trying for a really long time, you get really really good at whatever it is you're trying to do. And if what you're trying to do somehow touches the hearts of as many people as TMBG it is beyond the mere childish dabbling that people call art. It's... important.
Best Rock Video
No joke, John Linnell is a really amazing melodist
Love all the references to common dreams people have.
THAT LIGHTBULB. OH MY GOD,,,,
My favorite band
they still got it.
According to Spotify this was my most-played song this year. No surprise there, I love it!
This is just too relatable to my dreams .

The song is heartbreaking but the video tore me apart!
If like me you've waited 30 years to see TMBG don't wait another second.
"Most of my memories tend to be sad so I wish I could remember the dream that I had" dang.
I've kind of gone back and forth on They Might Be Giants for the last two decades (for various reasons). But lately I've been really into them again and this album Is a big reason. This is one of the best things they've done. Such great lyrics, even by their very high standards.
Also, get well John F.
Most of the time. Only 5 to 10% of a dream can be remembered. Meaning that 90 to 95% will always be forgotten.
On of the easiest ways to remember or expand the amount of your dreams you can remember is to keep a dream log.
Every time you wake from a dream. Write down as much of it as you can remember.
i'm getting Lincoln-era vibes from this, good shit!!!
TMBG is always grooving.
My favorite band for over 30 years! My son grew up listening to this band right along with me. He is now working on his Masters in music education and still loves this band.
i love the mangled Louie Louie chord progression! can't wait for BOOK
so good, we're so lucky TMBG's is still churning out bangers
Love the visual references to the old videos (at least the ones I caught).
STOP ROCK VIDEO!
This has some old TMBG vibes. I fuckin love it.
I have not stopped singing along to this song in my car since it came out, I love it so much. It makes me so happy that these guys are still around making great music.
what did I just watch and why do I love it so much
They might be giants, & I might be a fan.
Good to hear. I might just listen to them all day. Keep up the great work boys.
Great tune; really takes me back to Flood.
They might be bliss
lyrical phenomenon. instant classic TMBG rocker
This proves it. BOOK is gonna be nothing but bangers.
I really like the subtext how they take other songs and rework them so you are like whoaaah this is like a dream or something
I'm excited for some new TMBG.... I don't want the world, I just want your half.
THIS PREMIERED 86 MINUTES AGOOOO. Feels surreal, like I'm transported to the '90s and am witnessing greatness as it happens.
Also for some reason, I have the exact same trophy in my room, have I been the MC all along??
The more I listen to this song, the more I love it! This is one of their best!
Thank you, John’s! Primo old school tmbg… btw I saw that dream you had last night: what a corker! Awfully good dream. You really should try and remember it.
Takes me back to a Lincoln feeling. This is a good temperature. More please.
A TMBG all time great song.
as great as anything.
it is happening again.
Always a pleasure, gentlemen.
It really has a House of Mayors vibe to it. Such a great song. I can't wait for Book!
This is the only song that I will call, relatable, cause it's literally, "wait? WTH was I dreaming?"
great, great song!
I cant believe these guys are still going! Whats it been, like, 40 years?
After 30 years, TMBG finally stopped rock video.
The record in the video is "I f You Are But A Dream" which is perfect for the theme of the song.

Thematically this feels like an exuberant, rock n roll cousin to Bill Callahan's "Eid Ma Clack Shaw" and I love it! TMBG never disappoints.
This feels appropriate to the despair I feel myself lost in…
