  • Story about how a basement Irish pub came together. Go to my website: fluteandfiddle.com for lots of information on how to build out a home Irish pub. This video you are watching is a bit older now. I posted an update video back in 2022 here: • Lonely Man's Basement ...
    - which still doesn't capture how the pub looks today. I've added significantly to it. If you have one of these pubs, you'll know what I mean. #IrishPub, #BasementPub, #LonelyMansPub, #Irishmusic, #mancave, #irishbar, #Irishshedpub, #basementIrishbar, #basementIrishpub, #Irishsession, #Guinness

    Battle of Hastings was English.
Authentic non tourist pubs are everywhere in Ireland you just need to stay away from the tourist traps you all seem to head right for. (Galway's Eire Square/Dublin's Temple Bar) literally every town in Ireland is full of bars you would call traditional and filled with Irish people. That said this is a great build.

I was also very surprised at the lack of traditional Irish pubs in Massachusetts. I guess they mostly just live in our imagination. My hope is to build one in the next 5 years. Thanks for the inspiration.

Dan your video has inspired me with some more ideas for my own basement Pub. I'm from Tewksbury and built my pub after taking a trip to Ireland back in Nov of 2018. Almost ready to make my own video just need to check off a few more things. I noticed the Publican License , really cool with the small touch. I tried Googling an image to reproduce. If you have the time to point me in the right direction I would be grateful.

It's beautiful of what it became. It went from being a play zone for kids to being a play zone for a man.

I have a Scottish Tavern basement. What I've observed about the aesthetics of Pubs is loosely that English Pubs are Red, Irish Pubs are Black, and Scottish pubs are White and Gray. When you have the time, money and energy, imagine that wood painted black with some gold accents. With that I'd wonder if I was in Ireland or Massachusetts.

But I LOVE the collection. It is SO hard to just hang out and not get buzzed and turn into a docent, giving a tour. My friends will goad me into doing it for a first time visitor. When I'm drunk I basically do this You Tube video live.

Nice bar mate. I have a few comments about Irish Bars (seeing as I am Irish from Dublin but now live in the US) - American beers are very popular in Ireland because they are "new" and "different" when I worked in bars in the 90's US beer would launch with a lot of fanfare and it would be at a reduced price for a decent period of time example Miller relaunched in Ireland in the early 90's and a pint was a pound cheaper (essentially a dollar cheaper) than a pint of harp or something more traditional so they would target busy bars and local places and when money is short and you can 3 pints of cheap crap for the price of 1 or 2 normal you order it. Also Budweiser has been in Ireland for very long time. It was distributed by Guinness so if your pub served Guinness you had to take their other beers. That's why you would see bars with no Guinness and other beers. Guinness ruled the market so could dictate what beers were on tap in pubs. Budweiser in Ireland is different that Budweiser in the US it's a higher alcohol level and has a more malty taste (it's still crap). As it was ubiquitous in Irish pubs during the 80's and 90's American beer would launch and be successful. I haven't lived in Ireland since 2000 so Coors light is a relatively new beer on the market as it wasn't everywhere.
Bacon in Ireland is beautiful and bacon in the US is garbage - I'm right you are wrong ;)
Half n Half is entirely American. Before Friends was on TV Ireland didn't even have coffee shops. We drink Tea. Now coffee is everywhere but when you order black coffee in Ireland you put milk in it (full fat Irish milk is pretty much cream anyway)
What Americans (no offense) see as traditional bars are tourist traps. All the bars in temple bar are not traditional - that's all for tourist show. Most traditional bars will be decorated with GAA stuff from local teams, old jugs and beer advertisements. Those books you bought are great as they show more traditional pubs. The local pub my parents still drink in north Dublin which is 80 years old looks nothing like a traditional Irish Pub you see on TV.
As I have grown somewhat homesick over the past year or so I want to create a "pub" at home. Your basement pub is what I would create as it's a great mix of old traditional stuff and it looks homely - that's the main thing about Irish pubs is regardless of the crap on the walls or the beer they serve the best ones are homely. One of the pubs I used to work in was so ingrained into the local community that if a regular didn't show up for a couple of days we would go round their house to check they are ok. As they lived on their own we were their "family".
Finally I have a question for you - as an Irishman in the US - where did you get the Irish street signs?

This is awesome! Can you go more into detail about that Battle of Hastings towel? Also- do you buy every poster? Or do you have a way to print them out and home and frame them?

Great job on the pub and I really enjoyed the video. Thanks for taking the time (and a break from the beer) to put it together! It provides a lot of inspiration. By the way, you've probably already seen the Irish Pub documentary here on UA-cam. It really drives home how important the pub is in Irish history and life. ua-cam.com/video/fNg4fin5GQw/v-deo.html

I was really hoping the text messages would stop covering up the ability to actually see what seems to look like an amazing job..can you please make another video without covering up your pub ..I didn't get to enjoy seeing it ..looked like a background to your story of its evolution..which was interesting! Just wan a see the pub now though
