    More new affordable housing for locals has been promised to be built by government for over 10 years. So where is it? Why do we keep voting them back in when they never keep this important promise?

    Short term rentals are scooped up by mainlanders, foreigners, and outside investors! They take away housing from the LOCALS. THEY MAKE IT HARD FOR LOCALS DUE TO THE COST OF THE RENTALS!! HELP LOCALS HAVE HOUSING!!

      These have been vacation rental condos for 45 years and you should fire the politicians who have blocked building housing for decades. These rentals also pay almost all your taxes if you looked at a budget. Build housing, stop trying to take what isn’t yours.

      @br6422 there is no water
      Follow on the fire and water fight that has been going on for over a century. In Lahaina there is only about 27 percent of the water that goes to the people amd the county combined
      The rest of it is controlled by big money
      It's stolen water..
      But we don't even have enough water to save our people in a fire that kills people.
      Most of these condos were taken out of the long term inventory because you could make more money doing short term rentals. The majority of these owners are not from here and take money out of the county.
      These owners claim that maui county will go broke if this happens.
      Maui county is one of the wealthiest counties in the country not because of this list of short term rentals. They are funded largely by the hotels and the many many multi million dollar homes everywhere. The median home price of a single family home for a middle class family is 1.6 million in kihei, where most of these condos are. This also includes the luxury home of the multi millionaires amd billionaires that have their vacation homes here.
      This list is only a portion of the short term rentals which was considered as an exception granted to the normal allowances. At the time (in the 70s) they did a Inpact study and they knew that doing so would lead to the demise of the local people.
      How will these condo owners survive when there is no one to even pick up trash?
      We are at such a severe labor shortage for normal and very necessary community functions because locals have no where to live as these homes became short term rentals.
      Look up hawaii and public school busses. Our economy is suffering because we don't have locals to work vital jobs (keeping utilities, hospitals, schools, infrastructure..
      Etc) no locals means no tourists will want to go there.
      If they are OK with imminent domain I'm which all the Hawaiian lands were stolen so they can have their beach front vacation rentals (their rights were stripped for others financial gain)... they should be OK with this where people are becoming homeless or leaving their lands for the first time in hundreds of years by force, especially after the lahaina fires which burned thousands of structures.
      If they feel tht the county should do what is right to protect individual property rights, they should give back their stolen lands to the Hawaiian families.
