What i said about Betrayal at baldur gate might sound harsh, but its not intended that way. Not every game needs to be a tightly fought battle of intellect, some games can and should be a bit of dumb random fun. And honestly, theres nothing wrong with enjoying some random silliness for an hour or so with friends. It's why i still own the game after all. What's you favourite random silly game to play just to blow off some steam with friends?
I own the original Betrayal at House on the Hill, and it's a really fun game. Definitely not competitive, but a great game to chill with. Particularly fun with children because they really immerse themselves in the game.
I actually disagree about the first half being filler. I get your point, but playing with family - kids and teens - they find it enjoyable and therefore I do too. It's some light adventure that's an appetizer for the post haunt. I originally got turned onto the original Betrayal through Tabletop - a shout out here to a great show that got a lot of folks interested in gaming and probably helped launch other shows - and I spent the extra few bucks to get a copy of a game that looked really unique and fun, when it was still out of print. Betrayal was an instant hit with my kids, one of those few games dad didn't have to twist their arm to play. Tabletop was a hit with them as well. The people who are dissing Betrayal here in the comments... I'm going to guess they are "serious gamers" who love games I would find tremendously fiddly. Have fun, have a laugh, play a game. The theme and experience with the Betrayal games is fantastic. Get over the little flaws.
One thing i'll countepoint you with is that the haunt process is one of the fiddliest things in gaming, new rules, weird markers, a lot of exemptions. But yeah, as i said, fun light adventure game as long as you don't take it too seriously.
I view the first half of the game as leveling up, in a sense. That may not happen obviously, you can get screwed over, but typically you're doing things to put you in a better position later. I like that satisfaction when the haunt finally hits, and the unique narrative build up is always fun.
I perked up when I saw this at a local game store, as I enjoyed the Baldur's Gate PC game once upon a time and as I said in the other comment, my kids and I enjoyed Betrayal. But aside from the fact that you can put those two concepts together...Why? Chocolate and peanut butter make sense for Reese's but mango and pistachio? I don't understand the appeal of the combo, and I certainly couldn't sell it in my house even if you could sell me on it.
Hmm, I don't enjoy this one as much as the original though my family likes the theme much more. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Betrayal Legacy if you've played it.
Tried the original Betrayal once and just didn't like it at all, for all the usual cited reasons. I'll give it one more try if it ever comes up again, but I can't see myself getting into it. I'll add one more argument against: the rulebook was an absolute mess. Loads of ambiguous rules and convoluted explanations. This was made much more bothersome when we started playing and realized it is a very simple, straightforward game. Why the super long, jumbled rulebook for this kind of game?! Annoyed me more than it should have.

Buy it from here when its back in stock. www.miniaturemarket.com/wocc3...
Cubitos. Highly strategic? Not really. Highly random? Oh yeah. Lots and lots of pretty, colourful dice? Sweeeeeet. A tonne of silly fun? Definitely.
Sounds like players are best off just buying the original Betrayal. That was great.
@@Fatpie42 it’s an upgrade on the original B@HotH

Bless your sudden, but inevitable Firefly reference!
Played the original yesterday thanks to a friend and bought this version straight away, keen to try it out. Thanks for the review.
"The 'From dusk till dawn' of boardgames!" - HA, that's good!
Cheers :) From the halfway point, its a totally different game, and that really reminded me of that film

Agree with this. Especially the part about playing it with kids. Definitely not filler at all. But to each their own, of course.

Thank you for the short review and for first and foremost mentioning it has no solo-mode
Always have and always will mention that up front. Was doing it before solo was "cool" ;)

GWIL - excited to watch 9/24
Looks really interesting!
“Baldur’s Gate, it has no solo mode…”
Thank you for saving me both time and money 😁
Ha, perfect, also throwing me a like or a comment helps :)
That wizard staff brothers me so much 😅

Have not sorry, legacy games aren't really my jam

I totally get the rulebook issues, like, this isn't a complex game but its harder to learn than it should be
Oooh....
Oh, it's reskinned betrayal at house on the hill
Thats the 3 second review of it, yep
Always hated the original, you wait one hour to get 30 min of fun. This looks the same.
Yeah, its my biggest gripe with the game and I call it out pretty hard here.
But wondering around and stuff happens is fun to me
