At one point, I was an fundamentalist evangelical Christian and dedicated my life to serving Jesus Christ. I went to a Christian University and wanted to convert Mormons in full-time service. I basically wanted to be a missionary. Now? I'm a full-time atheist activist and youtuber who builds and serves the atheist community, and helps new atheists cope with coming out / being in the closet. This isn't about why I'm an atheist or how I became an atheist. This is about how I became an activist after having come out of Christianity.

I think your last few videos are a good track to follow. Even if investigative journalism isn't something you want to do every day, criticism of religions is a very broadstrokes thing in current atheism, especially in the US. There's no deep dives into the specific beliefs of specific groups. I find it entertaining, personally, and I'm sure it'd help future activism to let people know more about the strains of Christianity they're talking to.

The most hardcore atheists are always the ones who grew up in the most hardcore religious environments. It should be obvious that if you shove something down someone's throat all the time they're going to resent it. If you want to use religion as a tool to help make sure your children grow up to be good people; it's best to do so with a light non-restrictive touch.
Yeah, that's a pattern. I was raised in a religious family, but it was always clear that believing in god was a personal choice that you had to make for yourself.
I have made the choice to be a christian myself, and it has withstood any challenge thrown at it (and I live in Germany, where school and society at large have plenty challenges to offer).
Raising one's children in a christian bubble is the worst thing one can do if one hopes that they'll become christians one day.

I disagree. Maybe a lot of the atheist channels come from hardcore religious background but I think that is because they have such good stories of deconversion. And good insights into the religious communities and what they want. Most of the atheists I know come from a less religious background. Probably because I don’t really know any hardcore religious people.
Nice imagination you have there. So why aren’t muslims all atheists? And why are less than 7% of the world population, many studies say only 2% are atheists?

I am 60 years old and travelled a similar journey to you. Child of Fundamentalist parents living in Outback Australia, I went through the same struggles. As a gay man it was a even more difficult, believing that I was fundamentally sinful in the eyes of God. I studied Theology at University to really understand if this was true and what the Bible actually said about gay people. Five years of study and I became an Atheist from the simple act of studying the Bible. I remember losing my faith was traumatic, everything I was taught at church, based on ignorance of the text they were reading. Its been a long road, my family still holding on to fundamentalist beliefs, but I live with pride that I stood up and took my own path based on science and reason. Keep up the good work !

I’m a conversion therapy survivor. Despite my journey I desperately fought to hang on to my faith. What I recently figured out is that I was trying to hold on to the only thing my dad and I shared which was all things Jesus. I know it sounds messed up given my stint in therapy but that is what religion does to you. I had a second coming out this week and I feel the freest I’ve ever felt in my life.
As an atheist ex-Mormon living in Utah, I really enjoyed hearing about your career goals haha.

@@JamesRichardWiley Because faith fills in all of the holes. It doesn't need to make sense, as long as you have faith. Especially growing up in a religion. (I'm also an ex-Mormon living in Utah, though I never really believed in God.) My family spans back to the original followers and even some prophets in Mormonism. That's why, although I do enjoy a good argument about the shaky foundations of a religion, I think it's so much more important to attack the core belief of a religion and the reasons for belief. Most importantly, I think that faith is unbelievably important to break down. The reason for a belief is so much more important than the belief. Believe that Joseph Smith found the golden plates by listening to an angel? Fine. I don't care. So long as you have a good reason to believe. As long as people are raised to think that faith is a virtue, we will continue to have smart, good people falling into these traps.

"Move to Utah and convert Mormons" :D Ha ha! I'm a former Mormon from Utah, now atheist. I served a mission years ago in the south trying to convert Evangelicals to Mormonism. Now I feel like one religion trying to convert another is like Bilbo Baggins trying to convince Harry Potter that his world is fictional. Sure Mormonism is far-fetched, and has a shady past, but so does all of Christianity--the fact that one set of beliefs is more widely accepted and its bad history is further in the past doesn't make it any more true. I think that the history of faith, especially Christianity, has been a history of power and control - think of all the wars fought in the name of religion. What were they all about? Power and control - of people, of land, of resources, of money.

Sir William Ramsay,The Archaeologist who Discovered Jesus.
Sir William Ramsay ranks among the greatest of all the archaeologists, and was by all accounts, an intellect of the very first order. At the time of his death in 1939, he was considered the foremost authority on the history of Asia Minor. In his life, he held the post of Professor of Classical Art and Architecture at Oxford, and he was appointed Regius Professor of Humanity (the Latin Professorship) at Aberdeen. He was knighted in 1906 to mark his distinguished service to the world of scholarship. Ramsay also gained three honorary fellowships from Oxford colleges, nine honorary doctorates from British, Continental and North American universities and became an honorary member of almost every association devoted to archaeology and historical research.
But long before all these accolades were heaped upon him, he was just another Oxford undergraduate, and an agnostic. He believed, as did most of his peers, that the gospel’s accounts of the life of Christ were mostly an accrual of mythology and legend. According to the thinking of the day, the gospels were written so long after the events they purported to represent, they had very little historic value. After graduation, Ramsay’s area of interest was the Asia Minor of the first century AD. He took with him a copy of Luke’s "Acts of the Apostles," not because he thought it would be of much use, but because there were so few ancient travelers through that area of the world who recorded their experiences. He reasoned that although "Acts" was an obvious forgery, it still might have some tidbits of information that could shed some light on his discoveries.
He excavated throughout Greece and Turkey for over thirty years. He broke the ground in many of the ancient city sites. He excavated Ephesus, Iconium, Philippi, and many others. At the end of thirty years his opiniVon of Luke as an historian had undergone a dramatic reversal. He knew through firsthand discoveries that Luke was one of those individuals who were characteristically accurate in the information they presented. Ramsay made discovery after discovery that showed Luke was right and his critics mistaken. It got to the point that Ramsay found himself depending on Luke for interpretation of many of his finds. Also, as the evidence began coming in, Ramsay found it overwhelmingly in favor of an early first century date for "Acts." As "Acts" is a continuation of the gospel of "Luke," then "Luke" also had to have been written at about that time.Those two facts meant to Ramsay that Luke got his information from eyewitness sources, and also, the
early church, which was still filled with eyewitnesses, accepted Luke's gospel as an accurate biography of the Jesus Christ they had personally known. No serious historian suggests they were guilty of deception, they were enduring incredible persecution, precisely because of their belief in Jesus. They were certainly true believers. But what did they believe? While their memories conceivably could have been fuzzy about certain details of Jesus’ life, it stretches credulity way past the breaking point to assume they were mistaken about the main point the gospels make, that Jesus Christ was the greatest miracle worker in recorded history, and that they had SEEN Him resurrected from the dead.
On the basis of those facts, Ramsay felt compelled to accept Jesus Christ as the gospels presented Him, the Son of God, the Savior, Who died on a Roman cross, paying for his, William Ramsay's sins, and Who rose from the dead three days later, defeating death. Sir William Ramsay went to his death trusting this Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior from sin. When I made the "change" from hardcore Christianity to skeptical atheism, I was perfectly content to keep it to myself and be at peace with my own thoughts. I didnt think I'd find a community like this. But now that I have, I'm ecstatic. You videos are thought provoking, force me to analyze presumptions, make me want to critically examine the little things etc. Thank you kind sir!

@@fin3st Typically in today's world spreading truth is hate speech. How much have you sent to Ukraine to help them? What charities do you give to that help starving children in Africa? The Bible says "True religion before God the father is to remember the widow and orphan in their affliction and to keep oneself unspotted from the world". I had a job in August of last year for a week and made about $800 dollars. I gave nearly all of it to charity. So about spreading hate, I'm getting a little tired of this leftist mantra that anything that goes against the official narrative is hate speech. Could you be a little bit specific, and let us all know what charities do you support? I can give you a list of mine if you want. You see, the real test of a belief system is how it affects your life and the lives of those around you suffering in need. So far I haven't seen many evolutionist charities like Samaritan's Purse. Give me your resume' of how you are helping those in need, this could include animal charities. I'm looking forward to it. Those who don't know Jesus usually talk about charity but do very little when it really counts.

I grew up in a Baptist household all of my life. At 14 I decided I didn't believe what my parents did, (my dad is a pastor), and I moved out when I was 19. I'm almost 21 now, it's such a great feeling. They somewhat know I'm an atheist but they don't know the extent of it. It's still amazing, and I encourage everyone to get out if they need too ❤️
You inspire me like crazy. I have been an atheist for almost 3 years but I’m completely closeted - with the exception of my ordained pastor husband - for the safety of my kid siblings who are in a not great situation. I feel so incredibly alone since I can’t talk about the problems with my former religion, and your channel and ones like it give me a small sense of community. I have loved hearing about the time that you were also in the closet, it gives me hope. Thank you for all you do!

Dude, I have been an atheist my whole life. I am 54 and only found out I wasn’t alone until social media. I “thank god” that I found others like me.
I'm 68, and I didn't know a single other person who wasn't a Christian throughout my childhood - at least through high school. Even now, for the most part, I only "know" atheists online. So yeah, I know what you mean.

Whenever I watch mr.atheists videos I get ads from Christian schools and churches. That doesn’t add up.
As someone raised in a pretty solidly atheist environment, I alway find these kinds of stories pretty gut wrenching. I find it mind bending that there is still the need for this sort of thing in this day and age. This is not the Middle Ages any more...
Same here. I've stepped foot inside a church twice in my life, both times for weddings. I did go to a Sunday School for a few months when I was maybe 8ish, but I honestly had no idea what it was for or about. All I knew was that they gave out free donuts and Doritos. That was all it meant to me and thankfully my parents never cared to explain otherwise.
When I met my partner back in 1998, he was 15 and I was 13. I was atheist simply because I had never been raised in any kind of religion and the idea of religion was laughable to me, similar to the idea of meeting teenagers who still believed in Santa and the Tooth Fairy. My partner, however, was raised going to church every Sunday.
He finally convinced his parents to stop making him go to church when he was 17 which, although they loved me and still do, I think they blamed on me rather than his lack of belief and desire to go. Even after getting a degree in physics, he refused to call himself atheist and still says feels no need to take a stance either way since he is utterly lacking concern about the topic.
I remember having this moment where I realized what death is and that it comes for us all. I was still so young that my first "prayers" were to ask if I could take my favorite doll with me when I died. I look back on it now and think about how absolutely horrible it would've been if I had had adults that I trusted telling me stories about hell and stuff.
I think the thing that really snapped me out of ANY religious ideas at all was when I was about 10, my cat went missing. My parents let me and my sister look for it for hours in the dead of winter. When we finally gave up, we climbed into the bed of my dad's truck to cry and lying there, frozen solid inside a blue Walmart shopping bag was my dead cat. The dogs had killed her. I was hysterical and asked my dad if my cat was in heaven. He told me outright "No. Animals don't go to heaven."
That was like a knife through my heart and I was like wait, why? My cat never hurt anyone and was as sweet and innocent as can be. My dad, on the other hand, was a violent, abusive drunk who beat my mom mercilessly on the rare occasion he came home from one of his girlfriends' houses. That clicked something into place in my mind and I never pondered belief in heaven or hell again.
When I grew up, I learned that my dad was an atheist his whole life too but I guess that, being born in 1950, that just wasn't something you flaunted. Man, how I wish he'd just been open about it from the beginning though. All three of us kids are atheist and happy!

I came to Jesus later in life because I was generally concerned with the truth, not my conditioning.

You learn about religion from school in a purely academic setting and build your beliefs on your own, with no social pressure telling you to believe or not to believe in God. Your argument is that a lack of conditioning is also a form of conditioning. If this is your position, I vehemently disagree.
Or maybe you believe that a "pretty solid atheist environment" means that you have social pressure towards atheism, or that you have been taught to have faith in the lack of a god. If this is your position, I consider it reasonable but still disagree. The point of atheism is to not have blind faith to begin with.
The thing that really sets you apart from a lot of other atheist tubers, and the thing that makes you so special and valuable to the platform is your kindness and empathy and thoughtfulness, especially towards people whose beliefs you disagree with. I wish I could have some of your bravery, and hope that you are safe.

I'd also like to point out that communism and atheism have nothing in common. Communism and suppression of opposition? Yes. Communism and suppression of *religious* opposition? Also yes.
People can suppress critics by painting their group as bad - and in this case, there were religious critics, so religion was oppressed.
Meanwhile throughout the rest of history, people have been killed and forcibly converted between religions. So yeah, no, you have no idea what you're talking about.

I was a Mormon who finally figured it out, spent 7 years as an evangelical only to eventually scrutinize it and leave, so I can relate to your struggle. Thank you for helping people to detect BS and swim upstream of the social influence that keeps BS thriving.

I'm in a Catholic school and we have a group of atheist friends. I'm glad you found a community you can belong in regarding to your beliefs. There are also reddit groups where you can meet like minded people. You know telling your friends about you atheism may bring forward someone other who thinks the same way but is just as afraid of saying it as you. People will surprise you .

My mother's side of the family is French and really, really Christian. I live in Spain, which is a very Catholic country. When I first heard that some people actually believed in a literal interpretation of the Bible, I honestly thought it was a joke. Even my extremely Catholic family isn't that crazy. And they are quite crazy.
@@paris5410 Hola Paris, I think many people end up conflating belief in god and spirituality, with scriptural doctrine, religious indoctrination, familial norms and expectaions, culture and sociopolitical interpretations of texts and dogma, etc. They are all very different aspects of a complex interwoven tapestry, and then combine that within the dynamics of the individual, oh boy what a mix!! I imagine being a multiple generation of the same thing for generations, or terrified of uncertainty, or just having an innate black and white view of the world would make any questioning of the perceived orthodoxy feel extremely personal and threatening. We're all guilty of some form of the above some times or another to a greater or lesser extent. Kind of like the joke about the fella that's on the ship that sinks who prays to god to rescue him. God shows up looking very irritated and says "what are you talking about?? I sent you a dolphin, but you turned it away. The same with the turtle I sent. I even sent you a ship!! It's not my fault you didn't listen". And disappears in a puff of smoke. People are people and the good, the bad and the stupid applies across the board.

It's strange how much Christians talk about traditional family considering the church tears families apart and isolates people. The church's priority isn't to help people, it needs obedience and income.
The church thrives from the misery of the people. The more desperate and miserable a person the more likely it will turn to religion. They preach water and drink wine. They have no feeling of guilt when they take 10% of the income of a poor family and then spend it on their lavish buildings. They have the means to help the poor but they won't, at least not really. All they do is PR to get people to donate for them.

I think it’s a little more complicated that what you portray this as. For instance, most church members I know aren’t greedy and aren’t trying to tear people’s lives apart. Rather, they genuinely believe in heaven and hell and that Jesus is the only way to get to heaven. Thus, if you don’t believe in Jesus, they consider that basically the worst possible thing (which it is in their worldview) and will try anything to get you to come to Jesus. If they didn’t act like that, they would be contradicting their own beliefs. Now, that doesn’t mean anything about whether or not their beliefs are true, but most Christians I know genuinely care for people and aren’t trying to cause harm. Harm often happens as a by product though. Which is why you can’t use general statements to say all or none of the Christians in the world are the best/worst people and all are greedy and manipulators, etc.
I want to say even though my situation isn't as serious or oppressive I hear science be totally discounted on a daily basis. I'm called uneducated, confused, or a liar and I'm glad I can see this gaslighting isn't unseen and that I can learn from such a relatable and kind person. Thank you.

It might come as a surprise but not everyone who speaks english lives in the US.
Discovering your channel has been extremely comforting for me these past months as I'm one of those people coming from a very Evangelical background as well who's now just realizing I've been indoctrinated from birth. I've gone through all the motions of a good modern Christian; ie strictly attending church, scheduling daily devotions, being a bible summer camp volunteer, doing international missions work, volunteering with the youth in my church, attending bible studies/small groups and even doing a few small sermons in front of my congregation. But I'm now at a place where it feels so disingenuous, and I can't stand living a lie. I haven't told any of my Christian friends yet because I'm worried about how they might react. I just can't pretend faith makes sense to me anymore...

Mostly 'cause they still want to smoke but may not. Those that stopped smoking out of their own drive usually don't mind anyone smoking.
I'm an ex-smoker. Been a heavy smoker for years 'til I found out that I don't wanna smoke no more. No craving, no desire, I just put down the cigarette one day after lighting it because I noticed that I don't want to smoke and decided to wait 'til I want one again. Didn't happen yet.
This is why the parallel doesn't quite work out, with smoking, the pressure of society is on you to not smoke, with religion, there's usually no pressure from society to be an atheist. If anything, it's the opposite.

I don't care if random strangers smoke either, they have that right, but I wouldn't want to be forced to sit in a room full of people smoking and have them blow it in my face. We non smokers have a right to clean air, just like non religious don't want religious rules forced on them. If anti-smoking advocates hadn't spoken up we"d still be forced to put up with smoke in our face. Speaking up is important, religious beliefs don't exist in a vacuum. I'm sure if someone you loved came up to you and said "I want to start smoking" you'd try to talk them out of it and explain all the negatives. I feel like what you've stated about your Christian community make them feels like the pharisees in the bible compared to how Jesus was described in the bible loving regardless of immorality or positions in fact He criticised the Pharisees and Scribes the most in the bible more than anything. I'm in the same boat. As a devout Christian, I can entirely understand why people such as OP began to view the faith as immoral and incomplete. It also really does change my point of view on the aggregate of self-described "Christians".
The whole “Pharisee” argument is where I challenge most Christians.
Jesus taught some good things - sure. And yes, he challenged certain religious authorities- but Jesus also believed in many dangerous and harmful teachings. He believed in a literal hell, he was okay with slavery(or at least didn’t condemn it), he preached that you should love him more than your own family, preached that even looking at a women the wrong way was sinful- something that has caused centuries of problems within society, and he also believed in and condoned the doctrine of original sin. Jesus said that anyone who didn’t believe in him would be condemned.
These teachings are basically the heart of evangelical Christianity that have caused the most harm, and they come directly from the mouth of Jesus in the New Testament.
That’s why I’m getting sick of Christians telling me how loving Jesus was, and how he challenged the religious authorities of his day. Jesus was just as religious as they were, he just did things his own way. That doesn’t mean that his teachings were any less harmful, or arrogant.

If he created hell, and Jesus is god in the flesh - then Jesus could get rid of hell and satan if he wanted to. He wouldn't need to "warn" anybody of hell if didn't have to create hell in the first place.
Think about what your are saying. You believe in a god who wants you to confess to him that you are a sinner - but how did you get to be a sinner? According your bible - you were born that way. You couldn't help it.
So you are automatically being condemned for something that you can't help being born with. According to Christian theology, hell isn't just for terrible people - it's for anyone who didn't believe in Christ and wasn't saved - saved from the SIN THAT GOD GAVE THEM.
Warning people about a place that you invented to torture them for the sin that you thrust on them since birth, is NOT loving.

I'm not saying the historical Jesus was a bad person. I'm saying that Jesus was just a man- a human like any of us, who believed in some bad ideas - if he ever uttered those words in the first place. Hell should never be taught to innocent children or to anyone. It's a terrible doctrine that needs to be squashed from existence.
But my hunch is, that the gospel writers pretty much reinvented the Jesus that's in the new testament - adding their own ideas and agendas to the narrative decades after Jesus existed.

God didn't create hell, God is just set apart from Sin, Hell is just name/description/whatever humans call or known it to be. But in actual fact its simply a place absence from the presence of God. There is a reason why God choose Jesus to bear the burden of living out the perfect life and become a sacrifice in order for all believers to not have to live in the absence of God, if God truly believed that people deserve to go to hell why go through the pain to being nailed on the Cross when He can simply sit back and watch as every sinful being just burn? Here is where God's benevolence comes in He lets you choose whether you want to take this path or not, this argument is pointless as I know I can never prove every point right. I have to say I’ve been watching your videos in the past several days and I am so happy to have found an atheist who not only talks intelligently and with reason, but also one who promotes empathy and not just attacks the other side. I’ve been doubting since sophomore/junior year of high school, became an atheist in college, have found several atheist groups on facebook and they always focus on attacking/making fun of religious people, etc so it’s refreshing to see that there is a community of atheists that actually think critically and listen to the other side as well

I've been a Christian most of my life. In late August 2019 I started realizing how the bible and Christian faith are just crutches and placebos. That it is all wrong. Up to this point I have only told two people about me being an atheist. Everyone else in my life that are friends and family are Christian. I'm scared to let anyone know how I feel. It comforts me to watch this channel. I feel his story is like mine in a lot of ways. Hopefully I can find friends who respect me for who I am soon enough. A lot of the time I have to pretend to be a Christian and it's hard and painful.

Christians have been killed for their faith for almost 2,000 years. Christianity isn't all about tummy tingles. @Agnostic Imperialist Ultra Nationalist Of course - I will always accept the evidence and change my stance immediately, I care about truth and always do my best to disregard my emotions and biases. If the evidence is valid, it would be pretty damning. It still won't prove any form of supernatural entity exists but would make a strong case against atheism, e.g. it would show people need to belief in the supernatural in order not to commit atrocities despite the fact no deity has been proven to exist.
I became an atheist recently and this is a breath of fresh air.

The thing is, the message the Bible puts forth is polarizing. Penn Jillette isn’t wrong. People will read it and have one of two reactions: belief or disbelief.
So, in other words, Penn is right. That is the fastest way to become an atheist. It’s also the fastest way to become a believer.
This is such an important story to tell. My mum has a similar background, she was raised Catholic in Ireland in the 1960s/70s. This was a back when single mums got forced into slave labour by the church (literally - wiki "magdeline laundries" if you dont believe me) and abuse by members of the clergy was even more rampant than it is today. To this day, she is genuinely traumatised by her experiences. Despite being an atheist, she has recurrent night terrors about being sent to hell. I'm so proud of her for being strong enough to break away, even if it meant alienating her family and having to build a life from scratch in a new country. So bravo to you
So wonderful to see young people calling themselves atheist. I'm over 70 years old and I can tell you that atheism has been a long journey for me. I, too, was raised evangelical christian and while in high school soon realized that all that JC stuff was a big pile of BS. For the majority of my life, other than Madalyn O'Hair, I never knew of, or talked to, another person that called themselves an atheist. There was no one to turn to - no UA-cam channel and no atheist support groups. It took me a long time to mentally escape the brainwashing I received for the majority of my informative years. Talking to like-minded people would have helped me a lot. You and other atheist UA-camrs provide a safe, soft spot upon which to land during our journey. This old lady thanks you.
I feel for you, Sally. I'm 66 and pretty much followed my godless path without company from the mid-1960s until just recently when more and more people started to acknowledge their atheism. Back then, keeping my mouth shut about my non-belief was paramount to survival -- socially, culturally, even economically. And I feel hopeful that these young atheists will pave the way for a more secular-tolerant society in the US. The numbers are growing. Peace...

It uses a fortune cookie technique, the more vague you are, the more credible you seem because it opens up countless doors for interpretation and in the future it may gain even more validity. If the bible bothered to be specific then it would seem more god-inspired, don't you think?
I'm taking a philosophy class and realizing how important it is to dissect arguments and claims. As well as trying your hardest to not soley react on emotions. If you're going to debate, do it right. I think you're really great at bringing us unbiased information. As unbiased as possible anyway.
Also, I totally came out as atheist after watching you. Was always on the edge and then finally fell off. :P

I'm majoring in philosophy because it's literally all about breaking down arguments and finding flaws. I genuinely think that philosophy should be taught in public schools as a requirement, but that's not going to happen anytime soon, since it's literally all about challenging beliefs and arguments :)

What is useless about learning to break down these different arguments into their base components and looking for flaws in their premises? Heck, what could be more useful or more important than that? Don't get me wrong; it's not practically applicable in most everyday situations (which is why I'm double majoring; philosophy as well as botany), but don't go spewing off that it's useless. It's unbelievably important and focuses on challenging beliefs. It's from philosophy that many other fields of science sprang; and it's something which isn't even in the past. Philosophical disputes are happening even outside religious concerns; to what degree does a person continue to exist through time (the numerical identity question)? Is free will something which exists (no, it's not, but even atheists will dispute that)? Like, this is all super fucking important shit, you know? You're doing the right thing, and I appreciate it, as I know many others do too. I went through my transition from the LDS church to Agnosticism at a very young age (about 10) when I started to see the inconsistencies between Mormon teachings and the way the world around me actually was. I unfortunately went through that almost completely alone, there was no youtube or any good online resources for me to find, and books were limited at best. I lost nearly all of my "friends" as they chose the church over me, I lost touch with many family members too. The only real force for good in my stepping away from the church was actually my parents oddly enough, especially my dad. Even though he disagreed with my direction, he supported me and never lost any love for me through it all, my mom I think mostly pretended that it wasn't so, but still loved me too.
The fact that a kid going through what I did can find content like yours, and many of the folks you mentioned here on UA-cam and KNOW that they are not alone is great. I at least still had my parent's love through it all, but many don't, or are even threatened by the parents who are supposed to love them. With that, they have no safe place to go and feel as if they are cast into a hostile, backwards world. Support fo those going through this isn't just a light in the darkness, for many, it may be the most vital sustenance that they need to keep going.
We all need community and love, and for many leaving religion, they loose both overnight. Channels like yours provide a safety net that allows people to find a community that loves them for who they are.
I know this video is a few years old, but it seemed like the best place for a comment like this. Keep doing what you do and thank you.

2:20 When I was still a Mormon, this is the kind of stuff that really made me dislike other Christian sects. And to be honest, other faiths going to these lengths play into Mormons believing they are part of the one true church. Some of my leaders, as well as companions when I was a missionary, would explain how other faiths going to such great lengths to pull us out of the LDS church was basically Satan pulling the strings to get us to renounce our faith. Not saying every Mormon believes this though. I didn't dislike them because they were being "controlled by the devil"; instead I thought it was very insulting that they would spend so much time trying to tear down my beliefs rather than praising God and acting Christ-like.
In the end, I suppose it helped me though, as now that I have left the LDS church, Christianity is not enticing to me at all. People definitely have a problem with me saying I'm an atheist, but really I hope they would just be supportive of me trying to find happiness where I can.
Love your stuff, Drew. People like you, Cosmic Skeptic, and Theramin Trees helped me realize I was not happy with the lifestyle I was living, and that there is more to life than blindly following others.

I'm a Christian and I'm disgusted when Christians believe that they can force someone to be Christian especially through shame and judgement. It is the job of a Christian to aid people who want God, not to batter them with threats, they must choose of their own volition. You are quite brave for defying the beliefs of those around you, it's hard no matter what the belief is.

Becca Scraps That’s a cop out. You see if it is your belief then the burden is on the believer of their own belief system. If not so then why believe in something that you can’t prove is correct? The agnostic has at least some respectful position as they are open to probability. Likewise, the theists position is also admirable because they back their belief by faith alone. The atheist finds himself in a uniquely precarious situation of not being able to prove their own beliefs, yet not able to admit their beliefs are taken on faith just like the theist. It leaves the atheist living in either a world of arrogance where anything is rejected wholeheartedly or living with the dilemma of cognitive dissonance.
@@beccascraps8141 That standard of evidence only applies to physical concepts. Metaphysical concepts like the state, human rights, etc. don't stop existing just because you can't see them. The Christian God's "Kingdom is not of this world". The Christian God is metaphysical.

I can totally relate to everything said here,am a student planning on going to medical school, telling my parents about being skeptically about their religion, the response I got was like you know everybody was like ah what "are u saying u're not a Christian" so I just have to keep it to myself ( that's I was saying I became enlightened ❤️) I only shared My knowledge with a friend of mine that was able to think with me and the other stuff but everyone around me with the church everyone was like hey you change blah blah, so I just have to like keep it to myself. As one of the people that will likely get kicked out of my family if I come out as atheist, I find solace in your and other atheist creators on the internet, so thank you.
Going to move to Utah to convert the Mormon's I found funny, being that I am a deconverted Mormon my-self, and having a mission for the church, having that same mind set at that time in my life. It's funny how reality sets in and changes things. Some day I may come out with my own deconversion story, but even though I don't talk about it, I don't shay away from it when it comes up. Most of the UA-cam channels that I watched when I was moving away from god seam to no longer exist, but I'm glad to see that there are others like yourself filling in the spaces.

Same here... My parents and especially my mom have made great efforts to keep religion away form me - this is a gift you can never repay to parents, it's the greatest blessing.
I wasn't so much raised as an atheist, more that my parents never talked to me about religion. It therefore gave me time to think for myself and quickly come to the realisation very early on in life that all religions are almost certainly man made. It's only been in recent years that I found out that my parents were also atheist. That pleased me no end but I would guess that's a pretty typical story for us raised in the UK.

I have been on the edge for a long time. I was a catholic for 25+ years and even went to the seminary for 2 years to become a priest. I started listening to Secular Talk, which led me to FFRF, which led me to DarkMatter2525, TalkHeathens, The Atheist Experience and Matt Dillahunty is the one that pushed me off the edge. I then discovered your channel and I gotta tell you good sir, you are a force to recon with.
Please keep it up. If I was a very faithful catholic (I felt the spirit, I prayed, I cried, yaddiyadda) but am now an atheist, you can help many people. Your channel is but one of the cogs in the thought process of believers, sometimes it is making the machine go, sometimes your cog is the one that activates the push mechanism.
There's a special place in the lake of fire for people who pluck out others from believing in God... Your an atheist now. Here's a bible verse for you. IF you knew the power of God and fall away, your never coming back. Your most likely never coming back to God no matter what. Your going to the lake of fire. IT doesnt matter if you don't believe. I tip my hat to you, Drew, for the great work you do in bringing comfort and support to those who feel isolated by their atheism.
Growing up in a non-religious household in mostly-secular New Zealand, such isolation is not something I've ever had to experience - and, from watching channels like yours, I feel I've been fortunate when so many others have not.
I can only imagine what it must be like to feel that your lack of belief isolates you from everyone around you and how great it must feel, for such people, to find something like your channel or the channels that helped you through your isolation.
I've endured unpleasantness at the hands of overbearing holier-than-thou Christians but I've always had an escape route in that I didn't have to deal with them all the time and I could retreat to my atheist family and friends. So I can only imagine how terrible it must be to be surrounded by people you love and care for who would not approve of your thoughts and how it must feel to think you have no one to talk to about your doubts without risking censure or recrimination.
How can people justify that god is good if this same god tortures people for eternity? Besides wouldn't eternal bliss get a bit boring after the first few millennium?

Great channel! Interesting topics. I started to question my Christian beliefs when I was around 10 years old and found that I wasn't satisfied with answers I got. I was not in an evangelical environment so the decision to not be religious was fairly easy, although many family members questioned me quite closely about what that meant and did I understood what i was saying. I got a few rised eyebrows and whispers between some adults but it was otherwise an easy transition. Until recently I had always thought of myself as an atheist without really looking into what that was. I have had plenty of time during covid lock down to ruminate of such things and came across your channel. Its good! 😀

Yeah pretty much. Jesus was a poor carpenter who believed in charity and helping people in need, while most evangelicals are a bunch of tough-love hard-ass Republican types who worship corporations and the rich, despite greed apparently being a sin. Yet oddly enough it's those same types who fight so strongly against programs that act as charity/healthcare to the poor and fight so strongly for a strong military (despite 'Thou shalt not kill' and 'turn the other cheek', 'love thy neighbor', etc). In fact, comparing what they do and prefer to the actual bible, they're pretty terrible at following the will of God/Jesus.
The important facet is the whole community of the church to them. It's not about the higher power, its about tribalism.
Seeing a perspective from an atheist is intriguing. I have heard stories of people who have been atheists for a good portion of their life and became Christian. Not so much with the other way around. Being able to come out and show why you have changed your preferences is not really easy and it does not come without consequences. It comes with judgement and ridicule from some people. Even as a Christian myself, I don't think that we have any right to be judgemental towards anyone with a change of heart. We still have time to experience and see the world for what it is and choose on whether there is someone out there who has created each of us. That is the beauty of free will. I respect someone who is for free will.
