I use this app to learn Thai and Khmer because i live in Rach Gia, Vietnam where its located next to the Gulf of Thailand close to the Cambodia border, while this app isnt perfect, it helped me tremendously within vocabulary, grammar, right now im able to speak basic conversation in Khmer and Thai thanks to this app, Much better than Duolingo especially Ling offers much more less popular/ less commonly used languages
Duolingo gives you the weirdest sentences, it once asked me to translate "Are you a horse" I laughed hysterically because I imagined myself talking to a horse in another language asking if it's a horse. Any other language app over Duolingo any day
From a learning perspective those weird sentences are not pointless at all (and I firmly believe Duolingo does this on purpose). To learn a language you should not memorise 'useful'/'relevant' phrases that you can repeat exactly in everyday life. You should learn the underlying structures, how to form sentences in general, and then populate those structures with vocabulary *afterwards*. Since learning abstract patterns is not going to be very fruitful, having these weird sentences instead is the next best thing. Memorising these will not do you any good: you need to understand how they are formed, but once you do that, you can easily construct useful phrases from them yourself. Much more sustainable in order to acquire actual language skills.
The grading of her spoken exercises were a bit harsh. As someone who understands Indonesian I'd say her spoken ability was quite clear, maybe a bit slow, but definitley way above a 13% score
Excuse me, do you recommend Tagalog learners to use LING? Also, does the Tagalog content of LING reflect the language in practice (like words, phrases, and grammar)?
Hello Marco! Yes, I’ll recommend it. 👍 Ling may not be the best app out there, but I’ll still recommend it for Tagalog learners because Tagalog learning materials are scarce. There are so many language learning apps, but most of them do not have Tagalog. Ling does, so that’s great! 👍 For more advanced learners though, I’ll recommend actual classes with a teacher and/or community immersion-because a language learning app is usually just surface level knowledge; ergo, good for beginners, but not enough for more advanced students. 🙂🌷
Problem with this, they give very long wordy sentences that learners will forget. I learnt indonesian from living with people, and "hai kak" is enough to get a waiters attention, followed by "mau pesan burger". It's not perfect but you know the best sentences? The ones you can REMEMBER when you need it.
