"They don't gotta burn the books, they just remove them!" Words of wisdom from nearly 30 years ago!
ReDumplicans are the fascists!
30 years later that line always sticks out to me now.
It’s amazing how prescient Zach’s lyrics are.
@@joebrown5120 he’s singing about history, and it just keeps on doing its thing. Conservatives losing it and going after books and knowledge is regular as clockwork. Their music will be just as relevant in 30 years. As long as hysterical conservatives exist in droves we will have to keep dealing with this... Thought control and authoritarianism. Militarism and cop fetishization.. racist thug cops going after minorities with relentless drive.
In the 90s there was a huge push to remove evolution from the school text books.. in the 2000s they wanted to add creationism to the school curriculum…. These days they’re just openly fascistic. Trump said the other day that the US should be more like Hungary… 20% inflation and the furstest right wing nation in all or europe….
Bulls on parade.
@@joebrown5120 unfortunately easy to be prescient when things don't change
The lyrics are in reference to politicians (the bulls) preaching family values but then putting money into military instead of supporting those in need. "They rally round the family" is basically the campaign promises made, and "pocket full of shells" is military spending. 5-sided fistagon is a reference to the Pentagon.
I've been loving their cover of How I Could Just Kill A Man lately, and not too many UA-camrs have reviewed it. It's fire!
Bulls also refers to the stock market (bull/bear market) and bulls is also an old slang term for cops.
Agreed.
Interesting take on this song. I've never been completely clear about the Bulls metaphor, but my take on the "rally round the family" line is a little different. I live in Los Angeles, and when the riots were going on a few years ago, the cops only set their boundary lines in the rich neighborhoods (Beverly Hills, etc), and let the riots destroy the lower income neighborhoods. To me, "rally round the family" means that when shit hits the fans, the cops only protect the wealthy. They rally round the family (the rich) with a pocket full of shells, to protect them from us.
@@Turnabout I've always thought of the stock market analogy as well, like when stocks are on the run or "The Dow Jones skyin'...", the bulls are on parade. I'm sure there's probably a duel meaning with cops too.
Yea I think the band even confirmed at some point that “bulls” is a reference to the stock market and runaway capitalism. I could be wrong though, it’s been a long time.
RATM always brings the FIRE! No holds barred, straight in your face truth, no Bullshit!
When my kids were very little they thought the song was about family at the beach with pockets of sea shells ! Lol. Cheers
"Rally Round the Family with a pocket full of shells" is about how conservative politicians (in this case Republicans) talk about rallying around the family while leaving people destitute defunding public programs in favor of arms contracts and murder.
Yeah. It's pretty obvious. Especially considering the line directly following.
"Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes
Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal"
This..
Democrats too, the only solution is to overcome the capitalist system. RATM has never been a shallow critic of the system, quite the contrary, it has always been a Marxist band
I always interpreted it as if he’s rallying around the family and they only have a pocket full of shells. Either the shells are bullets or it’s a reference to the crap and trinkets that Europeans would give natives for their land. Sometimes they would be paid in wampum shell beads which was an actual form of legal currency in the colonies.
@@thlom well considering we're almost going to get into World War III right now you would think that you would praise to Republicans to fund a ready Army you know to take on f****** what's going on in the Middle East and if China and Russia gets involved bro and Iran like dude... do you want to be strong to be able to take on any f****** possible
The “pocket full of shells” was zach pointing out what he believed as hypocrisy. Ie: rally around the family but believe in gun rights and supposedly be War Hawks at the same time
This exactly. Politicians preaching family values and "protect the children" while arming the nation and killing kids overseas.
The War Hawks part is more accurate, the song is about the MIC (military industrial complex). When he says "That five sided fist-a-gon" in the first verse, it's a word Zack coined, and it just refers to the pentagon as a powerful fist that war hawks use to their advantage.
I saw Rage and Wu Tang together at Deer Creek amphitheater back in the late 90s that whole show was so dope!!!! Fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’m a little jealous of this
Haha Deer Creek, I haven’t heard it called that in forever. I think it’s had at least two name changes since being called Deer Creek.
I miss the Deer Creek days.
What's up Hoosier? Indiana boy here too. Great venue.
I was here, Lollapolooza 1993 at Buckeye Lake. Still looking for my brain cells, lol
The '90s was magical in music!
Music peaked 9/11/2001
Rage was revaluationary. One of the first to record their lyrics with a megaphone. Yup, thats the distortion you heard. He's singing into a mic with a megaphone lmao. And some of those sounds coming out of the guitar is a power drill across the strings while using the whammy bar.. They had to create a special guitar hero controller just to imitate that on the World Tour game lmao ❤🎉
As an almost 30 year guitar veteran (I was in high school when this came out) I learned to play the first two RATM albums beginning to end. Morello DIDN'T use a power drill for this song (or any that I'm aware of). He simply used his hand to rub back and forth on the strings while toggling between the guitars two pickups. That creates that scratching sound. There were other times where he's used an Allen wrench to rub over the strings for parts like the intro/verse to "Down Rodeo", but that's pretty much it for his use of unconventional tools used in his playing. Everytging else was done through clever manipulation of various effects pedals, and guitar controls.

oh dang. thanks for the update and kudos to u! Must of been a different band with a power drill. Probably had to, just to attempt to make that sounds lol.
@@optimisticgnomerz well you're not wrong about a band using a power drill as both Adam Jones from Tool and others like Motorgrater have used them with their guitars
@@optimisticgnomerz mr big with paul gilbert and billy sheehan was one of the first bands to use power driils, late 80s/early 90s
The 2nd verse is one of the best things I've ever heard:
Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes
Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal
I walk the corner to the rubble that used to be a library
Line up to the mind cemetery now
What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and movin'
They don't gotta burn the books they just remove 'em
While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells
Rally 'round the family, pockets full of shells
Totally agree 💯 I get goosebumps every time I hear that second verse.
You guys need to do "down rodeo" I'm trying to see flawd break that down lol 😬
This
I love metal, and I don't know if you'd call it that, but the riffs are so INSANELY heavy and groovy it's impossible not to headbang 🤩
The distortion on Zack's voice was meant to sound like he's shouting through a megaphone at a protest. Bulls On Parade is a protest song.
Love how u guys just jump into it!! No bs intros just "rage against the machine..bulls on parade" and in..lol love it..might have found my fav reactors
Tom Morello (lead guitar) is insane. So good to see the RATM love! Take care, fam!
In 96, I was 17. RATM was everything.
Bulls on parade was a slang for the riot squad.
“They rally around the family with a pocket full of shells” was a dig at the right-wing party that praises family values while at the same time receiving donations from the NRA.
Every single song they did, beginning 32 years ago, still rings true to this day. That's both praise to a band and an absolute indictment of the society they released it to.
sleep now in the fire is one of my fav songs from them
They are from Cali - there talking about social awareness. Seems nobody paid attention, so here we are .
Zack drops real knowledge!✊🏼
do their live performance of "Testify" in London if you haven't, that shit is fire.
This song still gives me chills
I was you two's age when this came out loved it then, love it now!❤
"Down Rodeo" is the Jam! 💚🤙
Im so glad I got to see them in LA back in 2010. Best concert ever
if you want a rap group with the guitarist, Boots Reilly and Tom Morello did Street Sweeper Social Club. and Zach De La Rocha, the lead singer, did some BANGER songs with Run the Jewels.
🔥
I don't think many reaction channels have watched anything by 'The Coup', Boots Riley is an incredible lyricist and film maker.
@@petergale7204 ...I don't know about the The Coup, but I can't find a single reactor that's done a Street Sweepers Social Club song, it's a shame too, "Clap For The Killers" is such a dope track, @FlawdTV would LOVE it!!
I second that motion, good call!! I might add the track Zack did with KRS-One and The Last Emperor "CIA", also, that's a dope track that still holds up today.
My favorite reaction to this song!!!!! You guys are the bestest ever!!!
Bulls on Parade is an economical reference
Check out the Lyric video for their song Wake Up... phenomenal.
I loved RATM's first album, it was absolute fire. But this is imo their best song. The way it just explodes in your face from the get go is unreal. Fantastic musical experience
Keep it comin!
I wish their snl performance would stay up on YT, it’s legendary
This song was written about government spending on the military and the stock market. Bulls on parade, referring to the bulls buying up military industrial complex stocks skyrocketing the stock market.
god i miss some rage "they dont gotta burn books the they just remove em" love to see you so deserve on here
saw these guys 4 times back in the 90s and easily one of my favorite bands of all time
The battle of los angelas is such a good album
One of their best for sure, I listened to it A LOT when it dropped.
They covered Cypress Hills-How I Could Just @#'ll a Man.Crazy good
a few of the band members including that guitarist, tom morello, got together with a couple of the soundgarden dudes, including chris cornell, and created the band audioslave
I'm so happy to see Rage getting some love again. I've been a fan forever and their music is still very relevant
I always took the song to talk about the military spending in America, the bulls on parade part referring to them displaying their armament, but idk
Rally 'round the family with a pocketful of shells, is a way of saying that politicians always preach having family values, while also being pro-war. Also using those pocketful of shells to scare your family into compliance and submission.
One of the incredibly few reactions to see Tom scratching and see it for what it is ❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤ FLAWDSKWAD!!!!
I LOOOOÒOOOVE that Rage is making a comeback right now!!! People are starting appreciate the brilliance of them!!❤❤❤❤
so happy uve found rage.. its a must to bring up lyric videos with them...check out 'wake up 'and everyone should really start with 'killing in the name.'..from 92 couldnt be more revelant today...
.🎤⬇️✌
These lyrics were absolutely key to my youth. I started to learn how the world works.
We could sure use these guys today.
This song goes so hard 🖤
Don’t like RAM but love me some Flawd and Meaux! Keep up the good work y’all.
Can we take a moment on how those snare drums sound like auto fire every once in a while?
Pistol grip pump is my fav cover they've done
Saw rage in 1993 in phx AZ A small club cald the grind. The 90z music movement was the best time music ever
Tommy wrote most of the songs, Zach has a way of delivering the lyrics....... glad to be able to have seen them and influenced by them
They hold up today period!
been a RATM fan for many years, and even though there is a lot of their political ideology that I do not agree with, there talent is something I think is undeniable. The entire group is extremely talented (drums, bass, guitar, vocal/lyrics).
These Commies do kick it.
I see PROF on the end of the video!! Definitely need to do some PROF Reaction!
“Bulls on parade” is in reference to the anti-war movement in the 60s and 70s “Bulls” was a term for violent cops and when “Bulls went on parade” was in reference to when the cops would attack, peaceful protests with violence
Fist full of steal- bomb track- No shelter - People of the sun- Down Rodeo with lyrics
He's talking about politicians that espouse family values when it suits them.
I think the pocket full of shells is just put in place of "a pocket full of posies" like in the nursery rhyme ring around the rosy.
So you get "rally round the family, with a pocket full of shells" instead of "ring around the rosy, pocket full of posies".
Many way to listen to Rage, audio, live, video and very important with the words, and make long reaction stopping every line😂😂, have fun
Bulls on Parade is code for the cops are in action but the metaphor can be used multiple ways within the context of the song, imo.
The best reactions are with the lyrics. Thanks.
"wake up" is my fav. fistful of steel, calm like a bomb, bullet in the head, guerilla radio are also good ones
🔥
🔥🔥🔥
The van broke up at one point and the band came Audioslave with a new lead singer
Rage were way ahead of their time fucking shit up since around 92
The vocals have that angry speaking with a megaphone at the protest sound to them.
Gotta bring the Rage 🤘
They were huge when i was a teenager in Brazil
Bulls are the government on parade, we are the family
You gotta hear the RUN THE JEWELS COLLABS
Young folks these days just don't know. Old heads always been about this.
Gotta listen to Bullet In The Head and Down Rodeo!
One Day As Lion....Zach is vocals in this band as well
You should check out a little thing Zack did with a band called One Day as a Lion the song is called "Wild International" or any of the songs he has done with Run the Jewels is fire. Really anything Run the Jewels touches is dope.
Seconded. Zac should be made a 3rd member of rtj. Close your eyes and count to fuck is magma fire
I was a sophomore in Highschool when this album came out
The guitarist joined up with B Real and Chuck D to create a group called Prophets of rage check them out. Everything was 🔥 in the 90’s music wise sux y’all grew up in the wrong era but all sure AF would have fit right in with all of us. Keep keepn it real 👊🏼
They’re not communist…
Dude… funny to watch the younger generations think ‘what the fuck is this?!’
Saw RATM (supported by Tool) play a 200 standing only venue in Glasgow, Scotland back in 1993… was 20 years old… blew my fucking mind! 🤯
this song is wicked good. most of their songs are though. you should listen to "killing in the name of"
I think he should wait a couple more songs before that one, at least he didn't do it first though, so wouldn't be that big of deal. It's just that I've see sooooo many reactors, who I know for a fact would love their catalog of music, listen to "Killing In The Name" first, and they like it ok, but they had heard Zack could spit, and that song, as epic as it is, has something like 27 words in the whole song, and just repeats, so for a first timer looking for bars, they often don't revisit the band after that.
Y'all gotta do "killing in the name" immediately
Zach and Ren have to be my 2 fav writers! FREEDOM!
Rally around the family with a pocket full of shells is talking about the government talking about family values yet they are preparing for war.
Listen to, “killing in the name“. It will answer some questions.
I believe a lot of their songs were recorded live, all together in one take. I want to say especially on the first album.
Listen to the whole evil empire album it will blow your mind! RATM is one of a kind
Hey guys I’m 58 and I’m still rocking with this band.Check out a live concert justify or anything they do is good.Peace
now you gotta do the denzel curry cover. also there is a supergroup with members of rage, audioslave, b real of cypress hill and chuck d
This song deals with the US military, their greedy money spending, and their aggressive tactics. It mentions how the arms industry encourages war to get military contracts with lines like, "Weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, not need, just feed the war cannibal-animal". They believe all military/governments no matter from which country are greedy pigs who only care about the rich elite and not the average citizen. De La Rocha said about the American government, ""American democracy is inverted when your only choice is between wealthy representatives of the privileged classes." You'll see this throughout many of their songs.
Denzel Curry covered and CRUSHED this track
Down rodeo and wake up are must listens aswell
this is a fucken' kick ass song , no matter how you slice it.
Listen to
Kae Tempest "Europe is lost"... a true masterpiece.
Down Rodeo
Down Rodeo
Down Rodeo
Did I mention you should do their track “Down Rodeo”??😏
I love RATM since I was 13 years old, in 1993. And I especially love them, because they are Communists! ❤
Dayum, I was 28 in 96. No, not old. Experienced, my young padawan's! 😎
They toured w run the jewels couple years ago
You gotta check out the song Tom Morello (guitarist) did with BabyMetal called "Metali"...
