    Close to our house on the French side of the Spanish border, a car shipping company has entirely covered their enormous car park with solar panels shades, 12 GWh annually. On top of providing shade and electricity, the installation also protects the cars (up to 6000) from not-so-rare hail storms.

      I've long wondered if this type of thing was wildly rolled out, if it would help to reduce the heat island effect in towns and cities. All those tarmac and concrete parking areas act as giant storage heaters. If course solar panels are dark in colour & aren't reflective, but they also don't retain anywhere near as much heat as the aforementioned materials.

      @@robinbennett5994in the case of the supermarkets Robert mentioned I am pretty sure the production is used on site for cooling and other infrastructure. In the case of the parking lot, that is a proper power station so clearly there is a supplier deal behind it.

      @@robinbennett5994 As with many a medium to large generator looking to sell ⚡ back to the grid, they probably sought out a [PPA] Power Purchase Agreement with a large ⚡ consumers or an off-take agreement with the local utility company either ahead of time or shortly thereafter. I couldn't say one way or another if they get a better price per MWh than domestic suppliers, but I wouldn't be all that surprised if it was at least slightly better. Sorry I can't be more specific.

    A Swedish mile is 10 km. I found this out the hard way when I asked for the distance to a pub the guy said it was about 2 miles, I thought I can walk that. After 2 hours of walking I was still in a forest. I tried to get a hitch but not to many people on the road. I got a lift after a while and after explaining everything he laughed and said that a Swedish mile is 10 km.

      I thought about pointing that out, but the Topgear article Rob has linked to for this topic says the route runs between Hallsberg and Örebro, which is only about 2.5 Swedish miles - or 16-ish English ones. I seem to remember hearing miles are still commonly used for road distances in Britain? And of course exclusively in the USA. So probably a quite unsurprising choice of units for the publication.

      ​@@SebastianSchleussner yes we're quite odd here🇬🇧 we use miles and miles per hour and I like to know how many miles per kWh I get in my car. Yet we have to use metres and centimetres for measuring, say furniture or maybe carpets but I still think in feet and inches and I wouldn't mind betting Robert does too.
      I think us folk of a certain vintage tend to think well, you took our pounds, shillings and pence away by stealth over a good few years and gave us litres instead of gallons both of which increased our prices hugely. We rolled over about that but by gosh we're hanging on to our miles, yards, feet and inches! 😅
      Or maybe it's because we drive on the left so we've decided might as well carry on with the old miles to keep our visitors completely on their toes! 😂

      @@judebrown4103 I love it! so descriptive! don´t forget "furlong" and "chain" these define the acre (1furlong x 1chain) which equals 4 roods or 40 perches (smaller area units).
      a perch is 1rod x 1rod ( a rod is 25 links and every link is a 1/1000 of a furlong). You can see where the Measurements come from and that they were from different origin and one day merged together. But wait, there are naval units also....

      @@marting1056 yes... you're right, furlongs of course still used in horse racing. I was never a great mathematical scholar...well I was awful, completely number blind, so I did not know those calculations, thank you I found that really enlightening I wish I was going to remember them, I must write it down! I can still "see" in my mind's eye what an acre of land looks like for some reason but a hectare, haven't a clue!
      My late father-in-law would have reeled of the naval measurements... I could never fathom those either....🥴sorry, had to be done.👍😄

    Another advantage of the new cell chemistry?
    Rather than a 600+mile (1000km) range, if manufacturers stick to the "miles per bladder then charge fast" system, they could provide double the number of packs at 40% weight reduction and half the cost.
    Great for "the mission"!

      300 miles are about what an usual driver makes fully concentrated in a day. Thanks to own an EV for one year now, we concentrate on trips with hotels and guest houses that offer covered parking and 11 kWh chargers. A new way of enjoying traveling and arrive recovered already. P.S. I do neither know younger people that must make over 600 miles in one day and most - evenly performant cars as my Kia EV6 AWD - do neither make more than 300 miles on ⛽️ 😂

      @@Lifecoach7Ra every Monday I drive over 300km 1 way, then Friday the same back, non stop. Once a month I do around double that, yes also non stop. Doable in a car, yes. I'm a tradesman. I have many tools. I need a van (preferably) or at least a Ute aka pick-up. Vans don't have anywhere near that range. I wish they did. I love electric cars & there is nothing more efficient, or that makes more sense. Then there's the trips out to nature (preferably the mountains) where there are no charging stations (it's where I think P.V. makes sense on a vehicle). Parked up for a week in the mountains must give a person enough range to get back to the nearest charging station, & at the very least power to cook etc.
      Yes, I know about Rivian. I live in Europe.

      No, he's already mentioned it on Twitter, very sensibly pointing out that perhaps Mr Atkinson should stick to comedy which he's very good at and let's not give the article anymore oxygen of publicity as it serves to spread even more FUD; I'm paraphrasing here.

      Why do people hate EVs?
      So what if they're expensive? Let the rich enjoy them until economies of scale kick in.
      Are they having range anxiety and charging anxiety? They aren't going to be forced out of their petrol cars
      It's like they feel threatened.

    Rail tracks covered in solar panels. Sounds like a great idea. The only trouble with some ideas, is that they sometimes collide with the realities of human nature. I bet, if this idea ever takes off, there will be a rouring trade in "second-hand" panels. No questions asked of course.

      I suspect the oily residue most trains leave behind (seriously - have you looked at the filth between the tracks on most lines) would be a bigger issue... some of it may be combustion related from the old diesels... but even on lines that have been electrified for decades, there's plenty of black gunge between the tracks.

      What do you think happens to the output of the on board toilets? Historically this was dumped underneath the train as it was going along. Also track bed maintenance will be made more complicated.

    Just to clear up about the solar panels here in France (where I live), ALL new industrial buildings are required to have solar panels. 😂 Go for it Rob, I hate diesel too, am same age as you and really hoping I see this revolution blossom before I go.

      Indeed. I had to check, but he's right. Shell made $42 billion and £40 grand/day for 2000 years is £29 billion. It's a good way of putting in pespective just how much money that is.

      Shell is a small company, 2% of Total.
      Aramco is by far the largest.

    If you want to tow a caravan then hire whatever vehicle you want for the period you’re going caravanning and own and drive a right-sized EV for your needs the rest of the year. You may well save on purchase price by buying a smaller vehicle, pay less for insurance, running costs and a more enjoyable driving experience. Always consider the total cost of ownership.

    If you've ever seen the state of the trackbed between rails, you already know why putting solar panels there is a bad idea. Putting them *over* the line, on the other hand...

      I kind of agree ... if you remember looking down at rails where trains could dump whatever from the toilet in the good old days, or if the trains were diesel and many dribbled oil for decades. But modern electric trains don't seem to have anything like that problem - and it is the stated intention of most lines to become electric if they aren't already.
      There is an issue, imo, of grit and grime, leaves and general crap being sucked under the train as it passes at speed, but surely that's too obvious and there will be some simple cleaning mechanism (brushes?) fitted by some or all trains?

      Why try to engineer a solution to a problem that doesn't exist literally anywhere else in the vicinity of the track? Not to mention that the panels can only lay flat, which isn't the optimal angle for the sun.
      No, of all the places along a rail line that are available for solar installs, some of them an ideal use of unused space, between the rails is the worst.

    5:08 Oh no! Please lookup debunking for Sun Ways!!!, it may as well be an investment scam. So many flawes with this system, just put panels on rooftops please stop trying to put them on roads and places where they get dirty and are subject to dirt, mechanical loading, why go to all that effort when there’s still absolutely tons of roof space available.

      Yeah it's just another Solar (freaking) Roadways. Putting solar panels in the worst places possible - flat on the ground in an environment with a lot of dust and vibration.

      We had some old waterfront warehouses being restored and repurposed in Sydney. The developers wanted to put solar panels on the roof .The warehouses had a conservation order on them , it took quite some effort from the developers to convince the powers that be that solar panels were in keeping with the industrial feel of a warehouse. Some might not have bothered. In a place like Switzerland, where much of it was built before electricity let alone solar panels there might not actually be all that much roof space permitted to solar panels.

    Induction loops in roads are such a good idea. Seems a no brainer.
    If that could also be applied to all parking spaces, taxi ranks and other destination points.

      Actually not. The efficiency depends o n there being a small gap between the induction plate and the car. Also it must be perfectly aligned. This is hard enough for static charging let alone on the go charging. That means that static inductive charging is rather pointless when you can do it better and more cheaply by plugging in. On the go inguctive charging will have all of the problems of static xcharging and will be extremely expensive.

      @@rogerphelps9939 Most of what you write is false and clearly uninformed; induction efficiency is able to surpass that of what most current fast charging cables can provide due to material resistance and heat, additionally induction charging in roads would not need to be +100kW but could easily trickle at

    I once made a comment about the massive power outage in Texas in 2021, suggesting that peaker storage and V2G electric vehicles could have prevented the collapse of the grid. I was met with a flood of mis-informed nonsense about powering the entire grid for days, killing EV battery packs, battery explosions.... and one genius who claimed my "golf cart" couldn't power anything for more than 5 minutes.

    Love your work.
    Bought a Hyundai Kona Ev four years ago, partly on your recommendation, and haven't been sorry. Recently the Missus and I drove it from Perth to Exmouth (Western Australia) and back for the solar eclipse (3,200km round trip) and it didn't miss a beat. Best car I've ever owned.

      The Hyundai Kona is also cheaper than the Kia Niro.
      Though I'm waiting for GivEnergy and Zappi to make their chargers compatible like the Ohme chargers are with Octopus energy
      That, and I don't want to buy a new car when my current car works and it's cheap to insure & repair.

    The train track thing is honestly just silly. Sure it would work in some ways but it's the epitome of a solar panel you can't swap out or service easily. You'd have to install them at night. It's dangerous. It's expensive. We can grow crops in the fields with solar already. We have more than enough buildings that could take more than enough panels than we'll need for the foreseeable. It's solving a problem with siting solar panels that we don't have. You might as well find a way to build a wind farm over the rail tracks.

      I am talking alone since a decade ago about solar farms above the roads and car parks.
      First should be supermarkets. With all those refrigerators light and aircons the investment will be recovered in a single year.

    Love it! My filthy 18 year old diesel has done 285,000 miles. I'm keeping it until my electric car is delivered. It's on order! At that point the diesel become scrap metal. It's lived a happy life.

    I wont believe Toyota is actually serious about EVs until they are actually a full on ev company instead if just making compliance evs. They are still pouring huge amounts of money into trying to stop emissions regulations here in Australia.

    Another error, in 2022 the most sold car in the world was the Toyota Cololla with 1.12 M, Tesla model Y was third with 760K (still amazing)

    Swedish Miles ...... be aware that the Swedes use the word 'Mile' to refer to '10 kilometres'. A linguistic trap that caused a few interesting situations back when I was managing a team of US and UK staff on a project based at Uppsala '8 miles north of Stockholm'. So '13 miles' might actually be 130 kilometres which is even more impressive!

    Concerned at induction roads as I have a pacemaker & can't go near anything electromagnetic. However taxi ranks: I am in favour of this technology and the makers of the London taxis should plan to use these as the next stage (pure ev's) from their hybred units being produced today.

      Induction roads are a stupid idea. Roads are right now just concrete. Adding electronic equipment will only make repairs and maintenance harder and slower.

    Before I purchased my Nissan Leaf electric car, I referred to your channel's contents. There is a lot of information there, and I did not think twice about purchasing a car. Now I am very happy and will never go back to gasoline-powered money pit cars.

      Yes the panel laying flat is suboptimal for the generation of electricity and if you are going to invest resources and money in solar panels you must get the best value from them. Yes install them along the railway track land reservation at an angle to best capture the sunlight.

    That Shell profit is just insane ! Why did not my parents just buy some Shell shares instead of woodbutchering !?
    Love your idea of making those oil profiteers pay something towards the solar-shading-generating over every carpark, esp those next to rail stations like the one at Woy Woy !........ Etc.

    Wireless charging should be used in formula e, setting them up in the pitlane. Cars can recharge have have a proper length race..

    The solar panel idea is not too bad but you would have to clean them quite often due to not only toilet waste but oil dripping from the trains themselves

    Grid batteries dispatch in milliseconds, basically instantly. Since the grid loses about 15% of the electricity that it transmits and distributes mainly due to fluctuations in voltage and frequency, the ability to smooth that out can vastly increase the efficiency of the grid. Small amounts of electricity can be instantly discharged onto the grid smoothing out all the fluctuations.

      @@rogerphelps9939 I researched this several years ago, and the accepted figure at that time was 15%. Start at the connection from the generation faciity. The estimates given were 7,5% on transmission and 7.5% on distribution. Losses occur at substations, and connection to the customer and at transformers. The main cause of loss was heat, especially near peak load. Grid-tied batteries should be able to cut into these losses.

    Would we a good idea to "turn on" those charging roads when there's a large amount of solar and wind energy. A good way to use the excess energy.

      Most EV induction charging is >90% efficient, comparable or even better than cables.
      Induction charging also enables vehicles to reduce battery sizes significantly, meaning extremely light vehicles compared to now.

    Hey fully charged, could you do an Episode about tires. With new vehicles and the different force application of electric motors there would be a whole new host of challenges for tires. Also a significant portion of air pollution in cities is tire rub of. Would be great to see a video about the Innovations in that space and also turn the heat up on michelin and co.

    The UK could have been a center for EVs. It's a pity that 52% of people just didn't understand that Brexit would destroy the UK car industry - the Brexiteers own economist even stated that to a government committee

    Solar between train tracks! That is nuts. The movement of the tracks would break the panels the first time a train goes over them! Charging while driving cars is silly. Charging big trucks and buses with an overhead pantograph that is on highways spaced out every 100 km for 5 or 10 km. Trucks could do a top-up recharge as they drive by extending the pantograph on the selected stretches of the highways where the power is provided. Not my first choice for long-distance recharging infrastructure. But maybe something for the Nullarbor!

    Solar panels over carparks are the best way to do it. Make them heated too so during winter they can melt snow and ice and we have 365 day electricity generated in a place it wouldnt have been. Then offer free or reduced price charging in these places. Near me there are several carparks with 1000+ spaces and it would generate a lot of "free" energy to power chargers, infrastructure in the carpark and for the businesses who are located there

    Lots of good space for solar panels along various parts of major roadways, high-voltage electricity wires, water irrigation canals, as yes, roadways as well. These spaces often have many characteristics that are good for inclusion of solar panels.

    Thanks for the information. Technology is just in its infancy far as making EV's go farther on a charged battery, charge up faster, and the batteries last longer. I also like the idea of putting induction charging capabilities into the roadways so we don't even have to stop and sit for the car to be charged up. Would make long trips a breeze and have no range anxieties.

      Pl;ease do some research on on the go inductive cvharging. Then you will realise that it is never going to catch on. Here are a few keywords: cost, efficiency, alignment, maintenance.

      @@rogerphelps9939 If you did any research before claiming others need to do research, your comments would be better. Efficiency is equal or better, alignment is in no way an issue, cost is less than fitting every vehicle with large batteries (essentially sharing the material between multiple vehicles, additionally the lower weight will mean more efficient vehicles), and maintenance would not be significantly different from current needs (especially since needing less than half of the current size of vehicle batteries would significantly lower the weight and wear of the roads).

      I thought for a moment that these new 'RVs' actually had drive motors as well as batteries, but I think they just have a big battery that powers the car for the drive.

    I have just been to look at the new control centre in Eyemouth (Scottish Borders) for offshore wind from the coming Firth of Forth wind farm. Up the road there is a 45 turbine on shore wind farm near Coldingham.

    More details regarding the french law regarding solar panels on car parks. I read that car parks could provide a solar capacity to 11GWp… that is 70% of the total solar PV capacity currently installed in the UK 😅. Imagine, just the car parks… Car Park owners have 3-5 years to comply apparently. So this should really boost things.
