And about HDMI 2.1 OR Display port 1.4, what is the best to get the best image too and best performance for the 240hz in 4K
I just watched this again :) So do a game need to support Dolby vision before you use Dolby vision? :) What about PS5? Do you use dolby vision? Do you make a calibration again after selecting dolby vision? :) Thanks!
Grate video, Thanks for info. I just calibrated. I have it on HDR and Peak 1000 but when I going into the display , it reads 460 nits. How do you get it to the 900s? Thanks
Thanks for this! I just bought this monitor and have been losing the plot over how to best use the settings; this explained everything brilliantly. Can I ask your advice on playing games that do not support HDR? Is it best to turn off HDR in Windows and the monitor and use SDR, or use Auto-HDR in Windows settings with Dolby Vision (Game) enabled on the monitor? Thanks.
Yw! I'm glad you found it helpful. For games not supporting HDR (or games with crap HDR) I swap between SDR and Dolby Vision game to gauge which looks best. It's a bit of a hassle to swap but I find it works best for me when determining the best image quality.
Have you noticed that Dolby Vision Bright or Game with Smart HDR set to Peak 1000 actually doubles the 500 nits peak brightness and it looks like 1000nits? So its actually the brightest HDR experience while still having those 1000 nits peak highlights. I dont know if theres some black level raise though
Peak 1000 will give you the brightest brights. There's a difference in the darks in that they can get really dark. There's no black level raise since this is an OLED but the dark areas do change with the difference HDR settings.
I've heard complaints about the HDR on this monitor for PS5. I'm very tempted to get this monitor, but I'm a mixed PS5/PC gamer with a preference for PS5, and I wanted to know what you think about the HDR on PS5. I watched your PS5 video as well but you didn't delve deep into that. Thanks!
I haven't had any issues with it on PS5. Some folks have experienced washed out colors. It's been a minute since I've used my PS5 with it, but this weekend I'm going to do more testing for the next video.
@@TaylorBrauer went from a 5700xt and 3600x to a 4090 and 7950x3d..... Giant jump. But don't upgrade the monitor. From a 1440p 175 Fps IPS. Said screw it one more big purchase and you video made the fear of the new become comfort and excitement! Thanks again!
@@TaylorBrauer only had the new build about a week I bought the monitor about 5 hours ago and just fascinated at the moment. Mainly making sure I have all the right settings and updates before I burn in anything. So so worried about burn in.
Man that was instructive. Great effort. I have 2 questions if you won't mind answering: 1. When I enable HDR in Win 11, it dims my monitor even with SDR slider to the max. The brightness/contrast option is also disabled. 2. Coming from IPS monitor the whites are warmer. Is this normal or my panel is defective?
Thanks! For your first question, you first want to check which Smart HDR setting you have selected on the monitor. I find that HDR True Black or Peak 1000 looks really nice. You can also turn on Dolby Vision for an overall brighter image. After that, be sure to calibrate in Windows 11. For your second question, yes, it's normal. This panel is on the warmer side.
I really appreciate this video. Definitely needed it since I'm getting mine at the end of this month. Questions though, does windows automatically switch between your calibration profiles as you switch HDR modes? Also do you prefer to stay in SDR for desktop use and manually switch to HDR or do you leave it in a specific HDR mode all the time?
Windows won't unfortunately. You can save different profiles and then use them as you change profiles on the display. I find that Dolby Vision is a great sweet spot if I don't want to switch and I used that for a long time. I'm now experimenting with manually switching between SDR and HDR. It's a bit of a chore but I do like the look of SDR.
I commented on your other video about the firmware updates however my monitor seemed to have the newest firmware already out of the box? It was 105, so no need to do an update?
Really good guide, just one question: what do you do for desktop usage? if i close HDR the image is too saturated because of the hdr calibarion tool icc profile. Do you always leave it hdr on? Thanks
@@TaylorBrauer it's windows+alt+b ! The problem remains though, that way the image is way too saturated. I don't mean just a bit... It's eye poppingly saturated, orange becomes red!
Great video. Do you know if the input lag is the same in the more color accurate standard mode and you wouldn't need to be in game mode preset to get the fastest? Also it seems like having Dolby vision game or bright is the brightest overall in hdr even tho the calibration cuts out at 500 nits vs about 1000 in peak 1000? Doesn't seem to matter if the content supports Dolby vision or not, it looks alot brighter on everything vs the other modes. Is something off in that regard?
Since this is OLED the response time is consistent for the hertz you set on the monitor. So 60hz has a slower response time and 240hz has a faster response time. Response times don’t differ between color profiles. If you’re used to an IPS screen having overdrive settings there’s none of that on OLEDs. You’re spot on with Dolby Vision. It’s an overall brighter picture. Having DV off and using the HDR profiles will give you more dynamic range at the cost of less overall brightness.
So let's say you want to go back and forth between HDR True Black and HDR 1000, does Windows HDR calibration auto-switch to the correct calibration you set up before, or do you manually have to switch it? And I assume that calibration automatically goes away when you switch to SDR?
I believe when you set it up initially for either one you can save the profile so when you switch back and forth you load the profile. That way you don't have to re-calibrate everytime. Yeah, SDR should clear the profile.
Congrats!! That might be up to you to some degree. Personally, I’ve been editing in SDR in the Standard profile. There’s also a DCI-P3 profile that some editors like too. Try a profile for a week and if it’s not giving you the results you expect switch it up until you find what’s right. Thank you!
Great video but I have a few questions. Do you use Windows 70 color saturation for the different modes like Dolby Vision, True Black etc.? Which Dolby Vision do you recommend using, bright, dark? Thanks.
You can re-calibrate everytime but I typically set it once and use it for all profiles. I've found no difference between bright and game but I use game. Dark is way too dark for my liking.
Thank you very much that help me a lot. My monitor color was washed out I was surprised because the color accuracy was good in the chart. Now it’s way way better, I am not sure which setting down it.but the peak brightness still 490 or something like that, didn’t peak to 1000
Maybe, it’s too soon to tell how these hold up. It’s got a 3 year burn in warranty to lean on should something happen. I’ve been using this monitor day in and day for work and gaming and there’s been no issues, so far.
@@TaylorBrauer Sorry for the late reply. But how exactly do you do that? Do you always change manually between SDR and HDR or is there an "automatic" setting on the monitor? Thank you in advance!
Mine worked right out of the box but it is dependent on your graphics card. I only have Nvidia cards so for those it works flawlessly. If you have Intel or AMD graphics you might want to check another source for compatibility.
Would love to see your settings for Mac OS programming? Do you have to change the monitor settings when switching between Mac for work and windows for gaming?
Great question. I haven't found a need to set them separate from one another when switching between work and gaming. Perhaps I could explore that more in-dpeth in another video.
I wonder if I got a problem with mine. Every time I turn on dolby vision or use something that would use dolby vision, I never see the icon Dolby Vision on the top right appearing. I wonder if Dolby is actually working on my screen? Is this something with Windows 10? I don't have 11 yet.
I am watching movies from my bed and playing on the desk whould you prefer the AW3225QF curved or the pg32ucdm flat monitor, or is it more useful to get a 42' LG C4 Monitor ?thanks
Great video, thanks! It's not clear to me how Windows Home and applications handle switching between HDR and SDR. My Home Theater JVC projector automatically switches between HDR and SDR depending on the content/movie that I play. For example, 4K Ultra HD movies mostly come in HDR, so my projector automatically switches to HDR mode. But if I watch Blu-Ray 1080p movies, my projector switches to SDR automatically. This is the first computer monitor that I have which supports HDR & Dolby Vision. I'm not sure how the Windows OS and Windows applications handle HDR versus SDR. Does Windows automatically switch between HDR and SDR depending on the application being used? For example, when using applications that are not games (such as Word, Excel, email, browser, etc.), do you use SDR or HDR? In Windows Settings, do you have to manually toggle the Settings > System > Display > Use HDR On or Off depending on what application you are using? Or do you just leave Settimgs > System > Display > Use HDR at "On" all the time, so you're always using HDR? Or does Windows switch between HDR and SDR depending on the application being used?
Windows is notoriously terrible at handling HDR in a way that's practical. I've found that I've had to manually turn in off and on whenever I want to switch between SDR and HDR. There's an Auto-hdr setting in the display settings, but I haven't noticed it making any difference.
Thank you thank you thank you, you solved problems i did not know i had... VRR for one... I was wondering why it never worked. also every review says turn dolby off... so i just blindly followed.... i dont care about color accuracy, i bought this for gaming and dolby game does look the best to my eyes.. all of the sudden the entire picture is more even and evenly bright.
Yw! I'm glad it helped you. Yeah, folks were really against DV for a long time and understandedly so since Dell didn't let you turn it off for a while. It's good that there's that choice to be had between DV and smartHDR.
Mine just arrived, I’ve done everything you explained, however peak brightness shows 460 nits on HDR 1000, and 996 only on Dolby. I’m on latest firmware and drivers. Is that supposed to be like that?
I'm not sure I understand the question. If you're asking if the brightness changes based on the brightness of the room then no. There's no ambient light sensor.
@@jayparekh3942 Oh, I see. It's a little too dim at 75%, imo, which is why I upped it to 100%. The only times I regret 100 is when I turn it on first thing in the morning and it melts my eyeballs.
Very good video ! I'm on PS5, once the calibration is done on the console, and the HDR mode is selected on the monitor, are there any changes to make in game ? For example on Cyberpunk, we have paper white, tone mapping midpoint, maximum brightness and hdr10 pq saturation. Will the game automatically select the most appropriate settings ? Thanks in advance
I saw another comment mention this, but how did you manage to keep Dolby Vision on in Baldurs Gate 3? When you launch Baldurs Gate 3, it automatically switches you from Dolby Vision mode to either True Black or Peak 1000 depending on which Smart HDR setting you have on your monitor. This is because Dolby Vision is not technically supported in BG3, however you can still view SDR content via Dolby Vision tonemapping. If you could explain your process, I'd appreciate it!
I didn't do anything outside of just starting the game. FWIW, I am playing on PC. When DV is on in PC I've never experienced any piece of content turning it off whether that be application or game. DV has always remained on for me until I manually turn it off in the monitor.
@@TaylorBrauerHave you tested this on firmware M2B105? I have no idea why me and the other guy in the comment section are experiencing this. Very strange.
16:20 Hi guys, I can't have the HDR True Black activate as the same time with the Dolby Vision. When I put the Dolby on, the HDR get removed. Is it perhaps because I'm using the display port cable? Thanks in advance. The video is wonderful and the explanation are very clear! Thank you so much for your work 🕊
Great question. You can either have Smart HDR on or Dolby Vision on but not both. What you're experiencing is totally normal regardless of which cable or port you use. Think of Dolby Vision as an additional HDR setting outside of Smart HDR.
@@TaylorBrauer Thanks for your quick reply! I see, I didn't fully understand. I thought about it because on the time code it looks like both are activated on your monitor/Windows settings. Thanks for the clarification though Much love to you and your family! Your videos are great, keep going
This probably sounds dumb, I'm just new to this. I'm currently using this monitor right now for the PS5, does simply switching off HDR mode on the monitor automatically activate SDR mode?
Awesome video. I would love to see the recommended settings for this monitor with a PS5. I can’t seem to get it right with HDR and prefer SDR. It’s got to be something I’m not doing correctly.
when im in hdr true black my peak brightness is 1020 instead of 426 like yours while in the same mode, why is that? also it says the hdr certification is not found so id like to know why that is and if it matters, thank you
It seems Windows sometimes doesn't report nits reliably. So, I wouldn't take that reading too seriously. As for HDR certification, I'm not really sure what that means. The HDR works which is certificaiton enough for me. I'd recommend to keep trying different settings of HDR and find the one that looks best and not read into the numbers too much.
I have Dolby Vision on the windows Screen is by far more bright maybe to much for the eyes but the Nits are still at 426 Nits not 500 Nits like you showed. I have Firmware 1.05. Is my panel damaged ?
How do I adjust the colours in the "Custom Colour HDR" mode? In SDR I can adjust the colours in the "Custom Colour" mode but I cannot adjust anything in "Custom Colour HDR" somehow?
When I use SDR, the colors are VERY saturated and bright. When I switch to HDR, everything is super washed out despite setting it to 1000 and doing the calibration. I mostly do work on my monitor, so I turned HDR off like you suggested. Just not sure why the HDR is so washed out, it's a night and day difference.
That sounds pretty normal. The tradeoff with HDR is saturation and color. You gain the very dramatic lighting. Upping the saturation levels in calibration helps combat it some but it's not going to reach SDR levels.
@@TaylorBrauer Thanks for the helpful video and response. I honestly thought my monitor or dock was messed up. When I got the monitor, my dock would not output 4K HDR, so I upgraded the dock and right away, I was like "Why is this so washed out". Your video is the only one that addressed it. I now toggled HDR off, but HDR video streaming is still toggled on. Hopefully, my regular work in SDR can keep the super saturation and when I watch HDR videos, that can kick in later. Best of both worlds. I'll try to test this!
Does the settings on the OSD save per source output? Let's say I want Dolby vision off when connected to the PC through displayport, but I want it on when connected to a Nvidia shield with a HDMI or do I manually need to config the settings depending on the source?
Bonjour faut il absolument passer sur Windows 11 pour avoir une meilleur qualité image en hdr ? Et les jeux que je possède sur Windows 10 doivent être réinstallés ?
So one thing i dont understand sorry :) If i enable "Auto HDR" Windows wont switch from SDR (Dekstop) to HDR when enable HDR in a game? You have to manually switch in the Dell UI? :( Thanks! And another question. When you have run the "Calibration" in windows and save the profile. Do you need to do more? My "Advanced setting" says "HDR-certification" no found?
Right, Auto HDR doesn't switch in-game and not in-game. I'm not sure what it does tbh. I have to switch if on and off everytime I want to switch between SDR and HDR. That should be all there is to it. Save it and it's good to go.
On mine when I use HDR True Black, Windows reports peak brightness at 1000 nits. When I use HDR Peak 1000, Windows reports peak brightness at 460 nits. True Black looks noticeably brighter, even looking at your kitchen in your video. Any idea what's going on?
@TaylorBrauer Definitely looks brighter on True Black, weirdly. Anyway, followed the rest of your guide. Warzone was looking a bit washed out previously, but looks fantastic now. Thanks for the video. Subbed. 👍
My peak brightness is 5,000 nits instead of the 993? Also in windows HDR calibration my lines wont disappear for way longer. Its roughly 2200 until the lines are gone rather than around 1000 in the video. Any ideas?
@@TaylorBrauer Thank you for your answer, I understand that I was just wondering if it does anything when it's selected in monitor menu alone, without turning it on in windows.
when i use the Windows HDR calibration tool, the things only get completely white at about 2500 and not 1000. i copyed all the same settings you did. but it's still differnent. any idea why that may be? also is it then best practise to just switch on windows hdr when using hdr conten. or should it be just always on?
@@minecraftprovie5076 I’m not sure on the discrepancy you experienced but check your graphics drivers and firmware. HDR will need to be on for HDR content. Windows won’t auto detect HDR content in SDR.
@@TaylorBrauer got newest graphic drivers already and also tried to update firmware (it said I have the latest). I just put it on 1000 like everybody recommended. Because 2500 is just too bright. Creat video, Thanks for info on calibration, I have it on HDR peak 1000. But when I look in the display in window I get peak brightness of 460 nit. How do I raise it to the 900s Thanks
Thanks! and you're very welcome. If Windows is reporting 460 nits then it either needs to be calibrated to get the new value or for some reason Windows is reporting it wrong.
15:45 How do you use DV in game? When I have DV on only my desktop use it. When I start a game like Baldurs gate 3 then it goes to TB400 automatically.

Grate video, Thanks for info. I just calibrated. I have it on HDR and Peak 1000 but when I going into the display , it reads 460 nits. How do you get it to the 900s? Thanks
Same. My nits is only 460 too.
You need to run the Windows HDR Calibration tool to set the max brightness to 1000 nit
I think we have the same keyboard and mouse lol and I’m thinking about getting this monitor!! Great video, thank you
It's a great combo. Keep an eye out for those deals.

Thank you for that video. Are you using HDR even for desktop/internet browsing ?
I was using HDR with Dolby Vision for desktop/internet for a long time and recently started using SDR. I'm liking SDR atm.

Man that was instructive. Great effort. I have 2 questions if you won't mind answering:
@@TaylorBrauer I see. I appreciate the reply!

I commented on your other video about the firmware updates however my monitor seemed to have the newest firmware already out of the box?
It was 105, so no need to do an update?
That seems to be the latest. You're good to go! Enjoy!

Really good guide, just one question: what do you do for desktop usage? if i close HDR the image is too saturated because of the hdr calibarion tool icc profile. Do you always leave it hdr on? Thanks
I which it to SDR for everything non-gaming and content consumption. There's a hotkey in Windows to toggle it but the key combo escapes me atm.
@@TaylorBrauer it's windows+alt+b ! The problem remains though, that way the image is way too saturated. I don't mean just a bit... It's eye poppingly saturated, orange becomes red!
@@kirilos8 I misunderstood your question. There's a color management app in Windows that let's you change your ICC profile.
@@TaylorBrauer so what you do is you change your ICC profile every time for sdr and HDR?! It has to be a better way
@@kirilos8 Windows has a lot of improvements to make to the HDR settings. It's useable but still a hot mess. You're not alone in your frustration.
True black or peak 1000? what does everyone use mainly? Also, are you using Dolby vison or not?
I learned so much watching this video! Thank you!
That's awesome! Yw!
Excellent video for HDR setup! Many thanks.
You're very welcome! I'm glad you liked it.
I just bought this monitor but im not a gamer....what's the best setting for video editing and productivity? New subscriber 🎉

I could see the curve being an issue if you're not at your desk in front of it. I wouldn't be able to game at my desk with a 42" but that's just me.
There's an Auto-hdr setting in the display settings, but I haven't noticed it making any difference.
great video, thank you
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.

Is it brighter when playing games at day time at 75 % brightness not the peak brightness??
I'm not sure I understand the question. If you're asking if the brightness changes based on the brightness of the room then no. There's no ambient light sensor.
@TaylorBrauer I'm sorry mate. I was sayin if the monitor looks bright at day time at default 75% brightness or have to change to peak brightness??

Thank you. I'm not familiar with CP2077 on PS5. I only have it for PC. I'd recommend trying each out and stick with the one that looks the best.

This probably sounds dumb, I'm just new to this. I'm currently using this monitor right now for the PS5, does simply switching off HDR mode on the monitor automatically activate SDR mode?
Not necessarily. Check your display settings to see if HDR is always enabled and if it is you'll want to change that.

You're saying use standard, other sources say creator- sRGB. So...which is it?
Use whichever one looks better to you. They're all color accurate so if you are doing sensitive color work choice the right gamut for your work.
Hello guys it seems that this monitor has some issue about compatibility with few nvidia gpu when its connect with hdmi 2.1, do you know this ?
do i need dolby vision for sdr
Dolby Vision is HDR only.

Any advice on why I cant get beyond 460 nits at HDR Peek 1000. Pretty sure I followed this guide well and its on M2B105
I wouldn’t take the Windows calibration report on nits all that seriously. Trust the image over it is my advice.

I'm not too sure what could be happening. One thing to try is updating your graphics card drivers and re-calibrate.
At 4:24 you say that hdr is not enable at the moment. What does smart hdr (desktop) do then? Should that be on off?
Smart HDR enables when you enable HDR in Windows and disables when you turn HDR off. The "Smart" designation doesn't mean anything other than "HDR".
