Rifkin - The MASTER! It's SO wonderful to re-discover items from my pre-teens / teen years on UA-cam. This is like an old photo album for my ears. Thx for loading...
He's playing it as Joplin wrote with instructions to "tap" while playing in order to give the effect of the "stopped time" in the music. Rifkin is absolutely the BEST when it comes to playing Joplin & his contemporaries.
@@Jesus_paid_it_all I just learnt (from sheet music) and memorized (by remembering chord progressions). Right now it's WAY slower (60-75bpm) and the stomping was a new challenge for me - I'd never seen it in sheet music before. My goal is to play this speed (between 105 and 113bpm) with similar clarity. I wonder how long it will take - I guess a year?? Or else never... LOL
When was this lovely video recorded? I have all of Rifkin's records into the 80s, but this is the first time I have ever seen him performing! So much fun!
@@mohammedcohen I envy you that as well! I've never stopped loving Joshua Rifkin's Nonesuch recording of Joplin rags. Many years ago, when I was in my teens, I put my little cassette tape recorder by my phonograph (I know--ancient technology!) and I made a cassette recording of those Nonesuch albums. Then I would put the cassette recorder on the bathroom counter when I took a shower, and I'd listen to the cassette tape of J.R. playing Joplin rags. How many times I enjoyed hearing those rags as played by J.R. while taking a shower!
Hard to criticize Joshua Rifkin. But why were his hands rushing his feet? He was keeping perfect time with his stomp, but he kept rushing with his hands. Still. Does bring back memories of car trips and eight track tapes from the seventies.
This is probably the best and most accurate version of Stoptime Rag I have heard

No, it was "stamp".
Not really, plays way too "white"
Just found the sheet music to this! I love it so much! My goal is to learn it and play it as good as this guy. It sounds amazing!
Did you ever learn it?

Boss mode . What sublime transition- emotes perfectly…
spoils? really? I think it adds character and really makes the piece! Joplin knew what he was doing...

Really excellent version.
...saw Mr Rifkin in concert at Seton Hall University while I was getting my MA in 1974/75...
I envy you that experience!
@@Radiatoron88 ...met him and got his autograph on my book of Joplin's sheet music also...

In the '70's I WORSHIPED ragtime!
Simply the best
Bravo
Broooo, he made the bridge so much more pleasant

2:50 ???
Well, it happens
It's a live performance. Did you really expect perfection? 😂😂😂
@vitesenzafine completely agree
@@toothlesstoeno way: just checkin' ❤ this performance
BRAVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!
Love Rifkin’s work. But all body language in this performance is cocky at best. Bombed the finish.
Boy wonder - slumming.
Wondered what that tapping was on my CD. Spoils the whole CD sadly.
Spoils it? Check the score.
