    Eventually, and not soon enough, violent rape or assault needs to just carry a lifetime sentence. No do overs, no early release, no parole, just enjoy prison till they carry you to a grave. And add violence in general.

      Commit this type of crime in the USA you either get sentenced to death or life w/o parole, which is basically the death penalty, because inmates don't put up with child killers !!!!!!!!

      Hope not, she had no way of knowing what would happen. The adults on the other hand should've known of his criminal history and should've kept all of those kids safe. Why was an uncle allowed around a niece and her friends, when he was a known sxul @buser?? This is why so many kids are @bused and k!lied.

    All these stories present it as shocking that the perp also attended the funeral and helped with the search efforts, yet that seems to be the status quo for these types of crimes

    I just saw a case where the perpetrator got 13 years and 7 months for killing and dismembering his ex partner!! Is NZ short of prisons? It's unbelievable!

    He was in prison prior they don’t rehabilitate. Life needs to be natural life. They never need to get out or death penalty

    Lock your doors ! Double check before going to bed! Vital info. Some bad characters go from door to door turning knobs and if it’s unlocked - you are at their mercy in your sleep. Carelessness is an accident but just check and double check - any positive action against a negative outcome is in your hands … until it isn’t!

      I use an add-a lock on all my doors.; Makes it much harder to get in. They'd have to break the door down and at that point I'd be ready with my shotgun.

      An additional security door in front of the main entry door of the house is good to have. It has a metal design/ bars on it so home owner can see/ talk to the person outside without opening this door. Some such doors also have a small section that can be opened from the inside to take parcels.

      He hadn't murdered anyone yet then. "Preventative" in NZ could be what's called supervised in some other countries, I guess? A somewhat qualified guess would be medication that lowers libido and aggression, mandatory random testing for alcohol/drugs and therapy sessions.

      Attending outpatient therapy registering worldwide staying in a place that houses offenders and not allowed children women or the community. I tell you what a great preventative probation would be for these types of offenders take all of them to an isolated island with just their types away from society and our children

    I have a wife and four daughters... it is impossible to tell them about the monsters walking among us....
    they just dont get it.... why would anybody do this ?... is their reaction... what can I say ? nature ? who raised this monster ?
    And how to explane that one day this monster will walk free again....?

      It's tough. it's a tightrope walk because you want to present the world and raise the child as trashing and loving, but you still need to find a way to instill fear and caution for the morally corrupt out there. How do you square that circle? How do you teach the children to fear the fire without letting them get burned once?

      I’m an older woman. I can say things do happen and it is best to be vigilant at all times. I lived alone mostly. I did not appreciate every one telling me not to go out alone. Do not do this or do not do that.
      Live your life. You can get attacked at home alone as well as out and about. Do not shortchange yourself because you are female.

    Bedding was missing from the house.. her body was wrapped into it.. she let someone in, was murdered and body and bag was taken.. must have been someone she didn't expect to attack her.. or she had forgotten to lock the door and someone just walked in..

    This case is awfully sad for Marie😢 Such a sweet and obviously loved and quite talented young lady to have been murdered. The investigative work was very impressive and although New Zealand clearly has quite lax sentencing guidelines they can use to put away murderers like this one, law enforcement works well at identifying the responsible perpetrator.

    The forensic evidence is always important evidence but I just wonder why he lied by giving a false alibi in a murder investigation. I can only think of one reason to lie about that.

      i was spending whole weekends alone at 13 and never once thought to do anything crazy. at 15 you are not as negligent as a grade schooler. but that doesnt mean i condone it necessarily. the whole idea of someone breaking in didnt even exist as a possibility to my family and i at the time haha!!

      And then suddenly when she is 18 and totally unprepared for life you send her out in the world? True story... my 12 yr old son wanted to be left at home for the summer rather than sent to child care. I actually called the police to see if there was some legal age for that (because I had a very vindictive ex). They said it really just depends on the maturity of the child. My son was an excellent student and pretty level headed so I let him. I also bought a lot of models to put together and kept him busy with baseball in the evenings and I sent his younger brother to daycare.

      15 year old children are old enough to be home alone for an evening. You realize she was in high school? Iwas working a job and driving at 15. It could have happened to any woman. The blame lies with the psychopath that killed her.
      I watched numerous episodes of this show, all New Zealand. The highest penalty was the one, 19 years. All were rape murders. I would ssy this country doesn't believe that crimes against women is a heinous crime. He should've received the death penalty.
