The longleaf pine forests of Georgia, USA, are one of the most diverse habitats in North America. One inhabitant is the gopher tortoise, who provides an unusual community service for fellow residents. When fire comes to the forest, his sandy burrow is a safe haven. But can all the different species that live here escape the flames together?

DID you burn intentionaly Green grass to make the scenario ?? Green grass are burning at 1:11 .. are you serious ? and all footages of the turtle burow are FAKE and the same , at 0:10 and SAME at 1:48 and again at 2:59 ... we see that the burrow is really small and look like a garden or fake .. Not a burnin forest at all
I will never feel so important in my life...

With 35 burrows per turtle, it’s really making a difference for the survival of other species. Amazing!

@@resilientlemon1302 there is no need of news channels to see the truth..just observe your surroundings..i watch the news channels to the least..unless it gets recommended in my homepage..but i have seen people in direct who have done shopping like crazy asses thinking there is no tomorrow and grabbing whatever they can get without even having a second thought will i use this one or will it not be more than sufficient for me or like if i leave it here it will be useful for someone who actually needs it.. humans had grown to that point where they just think the more you have the more you can be safe and happy .

Humans are capable of immense kindness and cooperation just as much as the greed driven destruction.
It's easy to focus on the bad things, because those are what need to be improved.

In California, because they don't allow occasional undergrowth fires, you get years and years of undergrowth build-up which leads to extremely destructive fires.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. We're not sure of the last part.
@@nunyabiznes33 sometimes doing something that seems helpful leads to more pain and suffering that what the last part refers to. They claim that controlled forest fires are bad for the environment and global warming but fail to realize the environment evolved alongside fire and now depends on it to rejuvenate. When you don’t burn certain sections each year in controlled burns, all the under brush collects and turns into a ticking time bomb. At that point the forest has enough flammable material to burn hotter and longer

@@n3tw0rk_n3k0 MANY tree species depend much more fundamentally than soil enrichment, they can't even germinate without fire including our beloved redwoods (Giant Seqoias).
Stymie exurban development and allow for some thinning of the forest. Those steps will go a long way and become increasingly important as the climate there warms and gets drier.

many forests require the nitrogen rich soil that comes after a forest fire for new tree growth.
As a Floridian I have been blessed to seen these creatures at least a few times already in my 24 years on this earth!

Nature is crazy. Trees evolved to resist fires with thick, tall trunks. Thick to withstand heat, tall to avoid its more combustible parts catching fire.
This turtle is just living its day to day life, but because of its ability and way of living, it allows other animals to flourish and live in the dangerous area. Symbiosis at its finest.
Evolution is just insane to think about. Because we can’t really see it in our lifetime but we know it happens, slowly.
This is truly an amazing little animal 🐢a real hero indeed 😊

Damn I always knew that turtles and tortoises are hella chill but this proves it.
Especially that shot with the frog 😂 the tortoise almost stepped on him but he knew it didnt matter since he aint gonna eat the frog so the frog just has to move away while enjoying the benefits of the tortoise's burrow 😂
To me this is both hilarious and awesome to see how animals live together with nature.

Oh my, the narrator, the music, the story of the documentary of this short video feels like, feels like.. Idk, but one thing for sure. I felt like I just watch a high budget film that has some kind of life lesson that we should all apply to ourselves as individuals, as a whole to make the world a better place lol

With the forest mostly gone with the tortoise, as someone who lives here I believe armadillos are providing burrows now. As they've become much more prominent, so have many other kinds of wildlife.

When humans used the forests for subsistence forests fires were far less common since most dry branches and grass was removed.
So just curious... How did they manage to not only be in a burning fire to film but also get their cameras in there ? I'd love to see how they did this... 💯❤️

I just wanted to point out that the "Gopher Frog" was actually a Toad not a Gopher Frog. Gopher frogs resemble leopard and bullfrogs. Other than that, great video!

You know.... fire burrows may be a way we can save other kinds of animals from wild fires. Imagine if there was a way we could make emergency tunnels for wildlife in places like California, Oregon, and Washington (2020 forest fires); We could take a page out of this turtles book.
