Good stuff Paul, always try to hit with the tip of the chuck. Also, sets with shorter chain/rope give you more control. But yes, all the ratios apply, regardless of the tool in your hand. The same exact broken and unbroken circles connecting to other circles. And with any weapon, mimicking blade presentation makes a huge difference.
Good demo of basic strike training. Thanks for sharing it. In my nunchuck training during my karate days, a prime target for striking on the downward diagonal strike was the collar bones on each shoulder. Very easy to break them and create considerable pain. While the head is certainly a good target, head movement is far greater than movement of a person's shoulders so a less skilled weapons user is much more likely to make a solid hit on the collar bones. I believe an important part of the mental training that must be included with the physical training is to picture in the mind a specific target that you are aiming to strike with each and every striking blow you practice making. For example, if you are making a horizontal strike to the middle of an opponent's torso, in your mind focus on the exact strike point you intend to hit. As with a firearm, AIM SMALL, MISS SMALL. Perhaps aim at the lowest two or three ribs in the rib cage, which are easy to break. Plus you may also shock the organs behind the ribs, such as the liver. The power of nunchucks makes this a very formidable weapon for close range hand to hand combat. But it takes a lot of practice to be confident and sure of your techniques. FOAM nunchucks are essential for hard practice. Only use wooden chucks for low speed drills and practicing with non-contact hits until you master your techniques. Last but not least, forget trying to learn flashy maneuvers. In a genuine fight where proficiency is needed, straight forward, direct attacks win the fight, not flashy twirls and spins. Make every move count. Don't waste time twirling the chucks. Concentrate on hitting your opponent...fast and furious.
Another great training video! Clear transition of skill flow from one section of Kali to another! In general, flexible weapons do provide additional control elements to attend to, if I may ask, I'd like to see a demo of the tabac-toyok with the footwork patterns.
This is video is great im glad you posted this because a friend showed me how to use these years ago after jujitsu but sadly he fell ill and died so i gave these up as i lost interest after his passing but its opened my eyes up again 👍
Thank you for sharing I’m learning a lot from your teachings , From the Philippines here learning nunchucku My favorite nunchucku is kamagung wood and stainless steel
I'm working on rangingstar largo footwork drills today and I decided to add a weapon into it and I thought to myself I think I'll do nunchucks today I lo and behold I look on UA-cam and you're doing a nunchuck video. This happens nearly daily for the past several months I think about training something specific and then I look up on UA-cam and you or Tom are doing that exact same thing.
Hi Guru Paul. Thank you for this amazing video. I'm considering on registering for a seminar in my class on the 30th of April because my class Elite Martial Arts is having a guest instructor for the seminar for Dumog Kali by Mandala Rich Howe and it's gonna be a three hour seminar of Filipino Ground Fighting, Paul.
This is a GREAT tutorial and an excellent demonstration of the practical application of nunchucks. However, the advantage a stick has over nunchucks is that you can maintain absolute control over your stick at all times without the possibility of EVER losing control. For this reason, the stick wins over nunchucks. A good stick-fighter will attempt to JAM the nunchucks by running a JAMMING patten to force a loss of control, then exploit that opportunity to disarm and disable the attacker. Key point is this --- that the more you know and understand about nunchucks, the better prepared you will be to confidently use them yourself, AND defend against them if need be. Example: You have to take an attacker's nunchucks, which is possible with a little knowhow, you now can use them to finish the encounter. Knowledge of all weapons, advantages and disadvantages, is a critical advantage to a Kali practitioner. Great job on this tutorial!!!
Yes, nunchucks are definitely fun. And, I might add, nunchucks are definitely much more intimidating than a rattan stick that looks too much like either a broomstick or a piece of bamboo. There are those that would scoff at that piece of rattan and laugh at its significance. As I have found, there those that are not immediately intimidated by a rattan stick, BUT keep in mind, the "element of surprise" is always to your advantage. Your opponent should never know what's coming and the knowledge behind that stick until it is too late. That's my survival tip for the day. Bahala na
Thank you, Guru Paul, for this excellent video on the martial aspects of the nunchaku! I've done the "figure 8" movement, but haven't thought as much about the wrist position for maintaining control on the strike. Very helpful indeed! I also enjoy practicing with the nylon cord v. chain, as it's silent, though I realize that the chain would obviously be better against a knife.
As always, another very well balanced instructional video. So many people don't particularly know how to use the nunchucks. Too much TV I think. 😂 It's a very huge difference between let's say performing on stage... Then there is actually using them in combat. I think you did a great job explaining it
NICE !!! P.I. !!! MY BROKE ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO , JUST FORM SEEING THIS ... I'M GOING TO BUY ANOTHER SET !!! (THANKS PAUL ) 🙂 (SIFU ,MARCUS SPEARS ) , ( JKD ,PFS, R.A.T. ) UNDER (SI-GUNG PAUL VUNAK ) !!! MAY (KALI AN JEET KUNE DO !!!! BE AROUND FOR THE NEXT 900 YEARS !!!!
@@kalicenter thanks for the kind response man and I love your FMA videos. Anyway Im a self taught kali practitioner at home hehe. My grandpa taught me a lot about using tge bolo, well... For agricultural purposes perhaps. But once you realize the heavy bolo feels like a rod of light wood as I constantly chopping the wood which is my everyday routines.
Nice paul.. In your next video can you plsa make a content about a filipino traditional whip.. Its called "BUNTOT PAGI" Its a dried tail of stingray or mantaray.. Yeah its a flexible weapon of filipino... And its have alot of stories and supernatural belief for this weapon. 😊😊 Salamat paul.
that hard 2 hurt guy really knockes on nunchucks. ask a 70s Filipino uncle who actually used them in gang fights how they easily cracked heads back in the day :-D
Good video and they really are used this way for the most part anyway. You missed an important tip for beginners especially with those very first strikes. BE CAREFUL - especially that horizontal one. If you angle too much without realizing it you are going to knock yourself out in the back of the head.
I'd like to hear your opinion in maybe a UA-cam section about some of these Goofy videos where I see little Chinese guy spinning this nunchucks around and really really fancy ways I'd like to know your comment on the practicality or impracticality of all that fancy stuff it looks pretty but I don't see it being practical
My take on that is have fun. Not everyone really practices martial arts for practical fighting which I think is fine. I enjoy practicing the fun fancy spins. Also, you have to remember that UA-cam is primarily a source for entertainment and the fancy cool spins gets more views which supports channels better. I think it’s good to mix it up and just do what you want to and be cool with whatever other decide they want to do. 👍🏻
Hi, I've been watching your channel for years and learning techniques with a stick. Let me share my comments with you. I think that the nunchaku you have is too heavy, which prevents you from hitting at maximum range (2:15). You fall back very much after a diagonal hit (4:00). There was no rebound of the nunchaku (9:52) as if the hold was long. Nunchaku is not your main weapon and you know more about it than the nunchaku experts :) very cool. If you allow me, I will send you my video with nunchaku jutsu techniques (enter your e-mail). Regards.
Thanks for your criticism. In Kali we don’t reach with our weapon we go in with our footwork. I never “fell” back on a diagonal strike in this videos. So I don’t know what you mean about that. Maybe but I literally slowed down the video. FMA is different from other worldly arts but yes, upload a video and the. Send it to me via my email system at KaliCenter.com. I always like to learn.
In the Okinawan Kubodo Nunchaku The Strikes are Snappy and Crisp In FMA Nunchaku it is Very Decieving and Tricky Fast to know where it Goes & Where it hits.
That is no way to use nunchuku in real life. You NEVER hold it from the middle of the handle to nearest to the chain. That is Hollywood and demo crap use to do flashy stuff for competition. You not only lessen the power but also shorten the distance. You either leave just 2 inches (like Punyo in arnis) or at the very end of the stick. Also most strikes are done with the use of the full length and power of the entire arm, not just using wrist twirls. Also his footwork and stances are very awkward. In a real fight he will stumble on his own leg. These demos in UA-cam are done with people playing with Nunchucks but with no true knowledge of how to use it in a real fight.
That’s not true. Not all Arnis systems/style grip the stick at the same place. Some grip it up to a fists length and others grip flush. Stance is awkward maybe to you but Kali we don’t stand still. The nunchucks or Tabak Toyok fancy stuff from UA-camr maybe useless in a real fight but it is fun stuff and if you train with nunchucks then you most likely play around with them like that too. It’s not a big deal but if it is to you then perhaps you should start putting up videos of your own correcting all of our mistakes from all these martial arts cultures around the world. But maybe you’re against showing the world yourself. 🤷🏻♂️ I know, it’s not easy to do. 👍🏻💪🏻 Go train and have fun and thanks for the criticism. 👍🏻

Really good video! It's always nice to go back to the basics and get a solid foundation in weapon training.

Thinking of adding nunchucks back to SHTF kit.
Please make a video on joint locks with nunchucks

Hey Paul. Can you generate more force with the chucks versus the stick?
I chose stick over chucks for control. I’ve beaten chucks with a Jo (short staff).

Interesting
I just have a thought.🤔
What if you put a 2 Kali some chain in the middle? Like nunchacks the chain must be long like the nunchacks but bigger.
It would probably need to be used more like a chain whip??? 🤔🤷🏻♂️
