I have spent many a wonderful weekend at the Miami Military Institute with my husband attending the Dayton Dulcimer Society gatherings in February. Little sleep was had by all as we played until the wee hours of the morning with our "music families." This was not the only thing that made this place so special for us. My husband's father attended the Military Institute as a young man. He was born in 1896 and would have been at the facility in about 1912-1913 -over one hundred years ago. I was so happy to find pictures of his father in the collection of photos at the Public Library and he was so pleased to receive them as a gift that Christmas. A photo of his father in his basball uniform was so very special to him. His father passed away when he was 16 so he had few years with him. When the director of the Institute at that time asked him if he would like to tour the building, he was so pleased. Every step he took as he entered where classes were held, where they ate, where they slept, the huge bathing area - these were places his father had been. He said it was a special feeling. The building was beyond saving but the memories will last forever. Many a young man learned how to move forward into life, a life that of learned discipline, giving, caring, and the value of hard work. Perhaps one can still hear their footsteps as they marched in uniforms atop the hill overlooking the small village of Germantown. A special place in my mind forever.
Judith Ireton Thanks for sharing such wonderful and tragic history with me! I just now found this area of UA-cam, or I would have responded sooner. I just heard a small dulcimer group play at my dads assisted living center in Miamisburg a few days ago. I like how you write! Thanks M@
My dad Joseph Cohen attended MMI in the early 1930s and may have been in the final class in 1933. He hailed from Columbus where I also was born, but his mother was from Dayton (Jennie Frank) who was always very committed to everything related to Dayton. I live just outside Washington, DC and made a genealogy related trip to SW Ohio in 2008 or 2009 to see Dayton cemeteries and Germantown. I'd love to see any other photos of the place when it was used. I believe the Veterans Park was actually MMI's football field in its hayday. -- Victor Cohen
Wow. I was praying my children could experience Camp Miami as I did. Living in Nashville for many years I did not know they let it go.💌
My Grandfather attended the Miami Military Institute from 1908-1920. Thank you for a very nice video. I enjoyed watching it!
