CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Frank (Henry Fonda) tracks down Harmonica (Charles Bronson), who's waiting for him, to find out once and for all what he's really after.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In Sergio Leone's epic Western, shot partly in Monument Valley, a revenge story becomes an epic contemplation of the Western past. To get his hands on prime railroad land in Sweetwater, crippled railroad baron Morton (Gabriele Ferzetti) hires killers, led by blue-eyed sadist Frank (Henry Fonda), who wipe out property owner Brett McBain (Frank Wolff) and his family. McBain's newly arrived bride, Jill (Claudia Cardinale), however, inherits it instead. Both outlaw Cheyenne (Jason Robards) and lethally mysterious Harmonica (Charles Bronson) take it upon themselves to look after Jill and thwart Frank's plans to seize her land. As alliances and betrayals mutate, it soon becomes clear that Harmonica wants to get Frank for another reason -- it has "something to do with death." As in his "Dollars" trilogy, Leone transforms the standard Western plot through the visual impact of widescreen landscapes and the figures therein. At its full length, Once Upon a Time in the West is Leone's operatic masterwork, worthy of its legend-making title.

Every shot from this film can be used as a painting. My favorite movie of all time.
It's a work of art
cinematography used to be just a buzzword when I was younger but now I appreciate it...
I need more wall space!!
Well said
In a lot of old westerns, the backgrounds actually are oil paintings
Acting? This is so real that it had to have happened. Simply incredible.
Yes I'm aware it's a movie haha
You think Sergio Leone:s movies are realistic? They are famously stylized versions of what had become a very preducatable Western genre.
@@scottknode898 once upon a time in america
@@ems7623realism and realistic are nowhere near synonymous. Leone’s film are the former, and that’s what movies should be. You want the latter, watch a documentary.
@@ems7623It's only predictable because the greats like Leone died, and lesser directors have failed to innovat the genre enough.
Hands down the best scene in the movie. When Frank said "Just a man" and Harmonica replied "An ancient race" I was truly astonished. What was already a great movie had just kicked up a notch into the transcendent. The acting from both men when they delivered those two incredible lines is something that I'll carry with me for the rest of my days. Truly epic.
They call them...Masterpieces.
@@raincoatriver bravo
Frank was the last of the Supermen. Who would out drink, out ride, out fight and out draw anyone. His time was done.
@@tg995nation6 I would love to see a prequel o Frank
True that. And one of the most prescient lines that hits home even today is that "other Mortons will come along...and kill it off." And they did. Kind of same sentiment in My Name is Nobody, the wild west became organized, corporate even for the bad guys, and it was no longer a place for men like Frank or Jack Beauregard.
The acting is so good it's astonishing. The dialogue the tension everything about this movie is grand. Charles bronson is my favorite actor. He always has been but in many ways this was Henry Fonda's movie. His performance as frank scared the living shit out of me and is one if the greatest acting performances of all time. Incredible
man with no name vs harmonica
Actually it's Claudia's movie.
I think man with no name will come out winning. Because he seems more smarter and we saw that Harmonica got shot.
Lol
Like me, you have great taste.
I only just noticed, but it's interesting that Harmonica never wore a gun belt until this moment, he usually kept his weapon in unusual places (in his luggage against the first three at the station, under his hat against the later two, and right in front of him when first meeting Cheyenne). Frank is the one opponent he wishes to duel, and the others are dealt with through wit.
I noticed it from the beginning, and youre right.
What a wonderful observation. Kudos to you.
Another layer to the onion of the greatest western of all time
Ha, never noticed that, thanks! I've probably seen this movie in complete three or four times; snippets like this, up to a dozen times.
that music sends shivers down my spine everytime.. sounds like death is ridning on a horse
+phillytheflyerable The music at the end, Jill's theme, makes me cry every time.
FOR ME HENRY FONDA IS THE DEVIL INCARNATE IN THIS MOVIE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@peteprutzos1536 and yet hes not so different then harmonica
There are movies with cheap dialogue and movies with good dialogue. Then there's this film with dialogue so incredible and perfect which makes a masterpiece and one of the greatest western movies of all time.
All time favorite western of all time....I'm 57yrs old seen it as a boy in the 1970's for the first time & seen many many times after & never tire of it! I'ts a complete masterpiece of a movie along with the beautiful soundtrack that goes with it.
"Just a Man......an ancient Race" That was Bronson. Definitely from an ancient race. Nobody left around like him anymore. His legend lives on!!
Leone's master work, without question. And you seldom see acting of this caliber anymore. Such a great film. Glad i have it on dvd
This is THEE western.
There are several great ones, this one is a cut above.
For me, Once upon a Time in the West is #1 and Shane is #2
I think Eastwood turned this one down, but he couldn’t have played Harmonica with the gravitas of Bronson.
"nothing matters now... not the land not the money and not the woman I came here to see you... cause now I know you tell me what you're after"
"only at the point of dying"
Money, land, woman, in that order, very practical, and non emotional.
Great lines, even now my favorite Western
Growing up, I thought Clint Eastwood and The Good The Bad And The Ugly was the best western ever made. I couldn't seem to "get" Once Upon A Time In The West. At 50+ years old, now I do. I still love most all of Eastwood's westerns, but Once Upon A Time In The West is a cut above everything else.
I wish whoever put this clip together had started it when Frank (Henry Fonda) first started riding that horse to meet Bronson (Harmonica). Not only is the great music started in the middle and we missed the beginnign in this clip, but it does not show the magnificent views of that horse as he is riding to meet Bronson. it should have showed the whole scene from the time Frank mounted that horse to meeting Bronson. There will never be actors again in the same class as Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards, etc. And who ever said this was a stupid boring movie is wrong. It is an in depth movie with feeling and goes deep!
My favorite scene.
Agreed. Must fully appreciate a scene
Absolutely agree. And note the moment when Frank sees Harmonica ... everything else disappears for him. The note becomes darker simultaneously. Just a masterful switch.
I think Harmonica took a little bit of pity on Frank when he realized he was just a man, the same as him, and the west had no place for either of them anymore. He might’ve even let him go, but just like Harmonica symbolized Frank’s past, Frank symbolized his. No matter their choices or if they could relate to one another as men lost in the world Mortons were building, neither man could avoid facing his past head on, and that’s why both of them choose to duel.
Henry Fonda was the coolest bad guy ever in this movie
For the life of me, I can't believe this picture received NO Oscar nominations. Nothing for Sergio Leone, Tonino Delli Colli, Ennio Morricone, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, or Best Picture!
+lb4lb A real crime, especially for Morricone getting totally ignored.
Morricone at least finally got an Oscar....for a Tarantino film. Leone was spat on by Hollywood.
To me, that was more of a Pity Oscar. As good as his score for The Hateful Eight was, Morricone's earlier works are simply magical.
Brendan Sousa
I have to agree.
The Ecstasy of Gold
Harmonica's Theme
Frank's Theme
Jill's Theme
The man is a wizard.
+lb4lb Same with Leone's previous film, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - not one nomination...Leone, Morricone, Delli Colli and above all Eli Wallach...all ignored. Clearly the Academy had a big issue with Italians making Westerns.
”Only at the point of dying”…”I know”….so good
I watched this film for the first time about a year ago, what a fantastic Western. One of my favourite films
very good
Frank : Morton once told me I could never be like him. Now I understand why : Wouldn't have bother red him, knowing you were around somewhere alive.
Harmonica : So you found out, you're not a businessman after all?
Frank : Just a man.
Harmonica : An ancient race. Other Mortons will be along, and they'll kill it off.
"You found out you're not a businessman after all."
"Just a man."
"An ancient race."
Damn.
All but gone. Pioneers, warriors, survivors, the world has no need for these anymore. the New Man will inherit this earth.
Frank was an ancient race like wolves (who also kill their prey without mercy, but wolves at least have reason for it, Frank is an ancient race because he was the pure embodiment of evil with no sign or remorse, Pity and Bravery contrary to Harmonica who although is not afraid to kill people does it with reason and does not enjoy it and is full of Bravery. Also the hats repersent their status Frank is black while Harmonica is white.
@@DexxxxT You hit it right on the nose Angel Eyes.
@@DexxxxT Anything can be open to interpretation. In this film, it is made very clear, that a new world is forming around men like Harmonica, and Frank.
The Wild West will be tamed, and ultimately robbed of its spirit by business, and the money men who control it.
Imho I think that line is straight forward.
@@bigpapasmurfz6252 Spot on. It is an incredibly straightforward line, and that's why it's so profound. It is all about the taming of man's nature just as the West is tamed by civilisation; good, bad, it's irrelevant. A man is a man, if he acknowledges it, and accepts it, as it has always been.
The best lines from the whole movie - 1:00 - 1:24
Frank: Morton once told me I could never be like him.
Frank: Now I understand why.
Frank: Wouldn't have bothered him knowing you were around somewhere alive.
Harmonica: So, you found out you're not a businessman after all.
Frank: Just a man.
**long pause**
Harmonica: An ancient race.
Classic dialogue there.
Greek tragedy.
@@timoaksel9320 This movie is a damn masterpiece, sitting comfortably in my top five of all time.
fantastic writing
THAT is what a good director can do. No Drama queens, no overt nonsense, just deep bottomless ocean of two men preparing to duel. 2 mintes and 40 seconds of perfection
Did you see batman vs superman?
@@Warm_and_loveable I did, wasn't even close.
@@mikemorgan5394 haha I was just being stupid
@@Warm_and_loveable I fall for it all the time :(
The acting performance of that 30th man at the left with the shovel is outstanding!
Meine Meinung: Der BESTE FILM ALLER ZEITEN. Einfach unerreichbar.
Amazing. The villain had nothing to gain in duelling him yet he went anyway
Frank could not abide having someone from his past on his heels.
A business man use money to solve all the things, Morton thought Frank would never success to be a business man because he only take care of things with gun, that's why hormonica said he is ancient race. Eventually they used dueling to solve all the things out, like a ancient animal. A brief dialogue involve so many emotions in it. What a movie.
A business man is more than money. A businessman is a leader, strategic, opportunist and above all rational. A rational man get take a loss and move on. Or at least sue in court if wronged. But a primitive man must have justice on his own terms. Man to man.
Frank's character has a great taste in horses.
What kind of a horse is it! Its gorgeous!!
This is one of the top 5 greatest movie ever made.
There are 2 qualities that described Frank: A greedy thug and a man of honor. This movie is a masterpiece, remarkable, amazing. Henry Fonda was magnificent.
'Just a man.' I can't help feeling that these words were especially symbolic. I suspect Frank knew that the younger man would probably account for him - but still he didn't hesitate. As he explained once he had dismounted his horse, he simply couldn't overlook the challenge posed by Harmonica's shadow. It was a threat to his very manhood. Frank had accepted his own limitations and was ready to concede that he was no businessman but he wasn't prepared to let Harmonica have the last laugh if he could possibly prevent that - even if trying meant his likely death. That would not be manly. He had been stripped of a great deal but his manhood remained. Perhaps the word 'just' signified that he felt that that was all he had left. That quality was something he would never surrender hence he was ready to die like a man if necessary.
Even Frank had principles, even if it would lead him to his death.
@@Wayoutthere Principles are something sorely lacking in todays day and age. What I would give to live just a day in this time period and have a conversation with guys like these at a bar. Maybe I'd learn how to be a better man myself.
@@Igneous01 lol. If u actually think it went down this way back in the day youre wrong. People would shoot each other in the back every chance they got, you might be seen as "dishonorable" but the guy u killed is still in the ground and ur alive
That is one of the main points of the film. The civilising presence of the railroad is destroying a way of life. Morton understood it . Frank ultimately couldn't change.
I love everything about this movie. I don't know if I can say that about any other film I've watched
Henri Galvão hokkian
Feel the same
I'm glad they had subtitles here. Frank's line, "The future don't matter to us" -- I could never make that out. It's bothered me for 40 years.
It means both men are living for that one life they have to do everything they want and can. They don't hold themselves down for love, money, family, or anything that men strive for in their lives for purpose. These two just have their desires and to see them done.
This exchange is important, especially the last lines of this:
"Now you'll tell me what you're after."
"Only the point of dying."
"I know."
It means both men are driving for a single purpose now, but we don't find out except through the course of the movie
"Other Mortons will be along, and they'll kill it off."
It's like Sergio Leone looked into a crystal ball and saw the future.
If you look at the history of our West, you can see that Harmonica was right.
When one is looking so intensely to meet a mysterious figure and keeps looking for him, it is clear he is looking for death itself. Frank did the same. You'd expect him to personify death, with his long and slender figure, black clothes and despicable character, but, it was Harmonica which personified death, actually. Frank was unknowingly looking into death's eyes all along, but was mesmerized until it became his mistake. Sure, Harmonica would have kept trying to persuade Frank into finding him should the latter not take the bait so easily.
That's the great thing about this movie. Even tho they give us a white hate and a black hat, both men want to kill for some sort of cathartic experience. To outsiders the woman can be used to illustrate who's bad and good. But to these men she doesn't really matter. All of harmonicas actions are motivated to beat Frank.
Watched 12 Angry men and Once Upon a Time in the West in two days. What a great actor, pulled off superbly both roles and so different too. I seem to remember that first spectators at the time had a hard time accepting Fonda as a ruthless thug because seeing him as a villain after so many movies of him being a moral compass was absolutely alien to them. And what a convincing villain he was too!
The Greatest Western of ALL TIME!!
Le duo Leone/Morricone est le meilleur de toute l'histoire du cinéma. Meilleurs films, meilleurs musique. Hollywood ne s'en ait jamais remis.
Notice that Fonda got off his horse the exact same way that Jack Palance did in Shane. Absolute class
Actually, fear, not class. These men who live by the gun live in constant fear. Fearful for every move they make, and every move made by others.
Both top movies
@@joehamlet4307 Fear is a fact of life. Tomorrow there could be no power and you would have to survive the old fashioned way. Don't ever forget that nothing in life is guaranteed. It is better to be humbled by fear than to become arrogant and blind to obvious danger.

Other Morton's will come along, and kill it off.
So true.
It's hard to find in moction pictures such a profound dialogue.
There's so many levels to this movie ... the old lawless west is dying, the railroad track is a symbol of the coming civilization and the characters in the movie see their old way of living is going away.
"Morton once told me I could never be like him. Now I understand why. Wouldn't have bothered him knowing you were around somewhere, alive."
"So you found out you're not a businessman after all."
"Just a man."
"An ancient race. ... Other Mortons will be along, and they'll kill it off."
"The future don't matter to us. Nothing matters now. Not the land, not the money, not the woman. I came here to see you. 'Cause now I know that now you'll tell me what you're after."
"Only at the point of dying."
"I know."
Que peliculon porfavot me encanta con dos actorasos y una actriz tremenda bunisima la veria 100 veces y no me cansaria nunca
Really is one of the greatest movies ever made.
"You were only supposed to scare him!"...."People scare better when they're dying"
It's over 50 years since I saw this film the first time in cinema and this scene still gives me the chills.
' People scare better when they're dying '.
Henry Fonda. The best bad guy ever
He looked like a cold blooded killer in this movie ... amazing acting.
Love Charles Bronson! He took every character he played and used the part to full advantage. Hiding around in a wax museum knowing he was deaf in House of Wax. Finding creative ways to defend himself in Death Wish. Jumping onto a moving train and hanging on for dear life in this particular movie so that Henry's character won't find him. Seriously, what could this guy NOT do???
Every time I watch this movie it is like wathing it the very 1st time.
I have seen the movie about 9 times in the past 20 years....It is truly a well done movie...
I'll always carry this film - this scene - in my heart. Elemental to my 20s.
Incredible scene - Henry Fonda was simply awesome!!
To Franks credit even he had a silver lining, as much of a monster he was he didn't act as a coward, he came back knowing his death was a possibility, even though the reason he returned was just to quell his haunting curiosity
I'm not sure if there is any positive spin on Frank whatsoever. He is a sadistic hired gunfighter who cannot live with himself knowing Harmonica is around. He is doing what he does. I think he knows it's the end in the way he basically throws his coat in the dust just before the shootout and he is instictually trying to holster his gun after being shot.
@@marksimpson2321 please expand on the holster ....I love this movie
@@Warm_and_loveable He tries to re-holster his gun after being shot, something he's never experienced before. He's never lost, and holstering his gun, which he used often, was his normal reflex. Except he couldn't.
@@marksimpson2321 Folks like to say Frank was just checking for the sun as he circled around to position himself. I say it was his fear showing through. The way he dropped his coat, the hesitation when he finally plants his feet, almost a stumble. His stance far more awkward than you would expect from one of his experience. I think he KNEW. If anyone was finally going to be his better, it was Harmonica, and he knew it. From the time Harmonica saved his life twice, three times in the town, Frank had doubts.
@@andyfletcher3561 Now that I think about it, I think that was part of Harmonica's strategy all along. To make himself appear 20 steps ahead of Frank. The fact that he knew Frank was being targeted before Frank even knew, shows you how superior his information is to Franks. So he's not only out classed him in his weapon skills, but in his information and strategy as well. That's why he knew Frank would meet him out of sheer awe as well as needing an explanation for what has happened.
Those were the big legends ,,there are no real actors after the old great movies ,,never..
That clip should have started right after Cheyenne said "Something is gonna happen" when the music starts.
