2D Animation is a different league to me with its own aesthetic. Maybe in a decade, animated characters will be a threat to real actors. You dont have to pay them, you can make them do everything you want and they might look just as real. I see the beauty but also how we eliminate everything natural, analogue and organic and I dont totally like it.
They way she reacts when he doesn't come toward her too is interesting. She acts like "Is there something wrong with me? Why can't I attract that one?"
The siren was animated so beautifully, with detail given to her every square inch. It is so captivating to watch the jewels and beads that adorn her body dazzle, glimmer, and twirl around as she dances on the water in a seductive manner. The fact that her eyes and lips are dark while the rest of her body is shiny draws your attention to them as she wails. Also, watching all the conquistadors twirling around and flailing against their will, almost in a sort of twisted, corrupted ballet, was both disturbing and oddly elegant.
“I wanted to build the narrative around a modern ballet,” Mielgo told IndieWire. “It’s very interesting to see how dancers actually communicate with their bodies and how action looks extra violent because of how fast and aggressively they move.”
It would've been easier for the animators to simply animate the soldiers walkingg to their deaths but I love that they put the effort to make them dance to give the story a visual punch along with the siren's song
I loved this too! and it was creepier how, unlike her movements, theirs were wild, broad tumbles, like puppets being dragged along and forced to follow - which, i guess, was happening. the animation and dancers behind it are amazing
I love how some people I know complained, “How were we supposed to know he was deaf”?! It’s literally under the thumbnail on the Netflix menu: “A deaf knight and a siren of myth become entwined in a deadly dance. A fatal attraction infused with blood, death and treasure.” Also, before each short, we get 3 symbols giving insight and clues into each episode. With “Jibaro” we get an “EAR”, “Beating Heart”, and then an “X”. At the very beginning when the knights are going through the forest on horseback, we see a close-up of his ear, and then his fellow knight speaking sign language to him. It’s pretty obvious.
I was high when I watched it and was incredibly confused but it was the best thing ive ever watched. Didnt know he was deaf until I looked it up on youtube lol.

I was visiting an Guadalcanal island in the pacific with some of my buddies & my girl. When I arrived at the island it was utterly breathtaking but something felt off. There was bright sunshine, crystal blue water, sandy beaches & magnificent mountains off in the distance on the far side of the island. When we first arrived on the island we settled in a cute little local shanty town of maybe a few hundred. My group of friends & I strolled through the town at our own leisure viewing the local shops, restaurants & local people. It was a very cute town but something felt off for sure. Some of my friends started looking for inns to stay at. My girlfriend & I & a few other friends rather walked outside the little town to view the cute southern island beach/countryside a few hundred feet from town. We saw animal farms, & villagers & a seemingly peaceful country life with beautiful tropical surroundings & breathtaking coastal beaches. When we arrived back in town, things began to get weird. Some of friends began acting strange & it felt like the locals were closely watching us. One night following our arrival tragedy struck. A friend seemingly unprovoked attacked & killed another one of our friends. Then killed himself. We thought maybe they got in a fight & perhaps guilt over the murder resulted in the suicide. Either way the incident destroyed the whole mood of the trip & everyone just began wanting to leave the island. The seemingly cut short trip was made worse after we discovered the ships leaving the island had all been canceled for some odd reason. Now we had to stay. The next night more strange events took place. The locals tried to attack one of our group in a butcher shop as he was trying to get food. Seemingly spooked the friend descended into madness claiming the island is cursed & driving us crazy. This friend would unfortunately go on to Tahoe revenge killing a few locals then also commuting suicide. By this time the situation had become dire as friends were dying left & right. The watchful creepy locals were now seemingly upset about the murder of a few towns folk & we were running low on supplies & temper. It was elected that our group would simply leave the cursed town & trek a few miles north to a friendly crab farm. The trip immediately began with trouble. Before we left we tried gathering supplies from the local market. Violence broke between our group & the locals. This time the violence didn’t seem driven by anger, revenge or reasoning. The perpetrators simply looked maddened by insanity as they charged at us with knives drawn. A couple more friends & locals were lost to stabbings that evening before we left. I was beginning to feel a heavy dark cloud forming over us on the gorgeous paradise island. I suggested to my girlfriend we separate from the group until the ships arrive again in a few days. Somehow a fellow group member overheard this. He confronted me with a knife yelling you can’t leave us Now! When I looked into his eyes I no longer saw a friend. Instead only eyes wide driven by insanity & almost controlled by another entity. As he charged me & my girl I was forced to pick up a weapon & defend myself. After a short struggle I killed the crazed fiend. The insanity spread like an infection to 2-3 other group members who also tried attacking me. At this point the group began to separate into 2 courts. The friends who still seemed like friends or who could use rational thought. & then the friends who had seemingly been struck with the same madness that claimed the lives of the locals & our other unfortunate friends. The group split up forcibly the next night as the sane group snuck off into the jungle at the break of light. Now with maybe 10 of us left we finally rested the crab farm where we hoped to brave the few nights until the return ferries arrived on the island. The next few nights were peaceful but soon madness struck again. Locals raided our compound in the middle of the night carrying of a few friends screaming into the night. The eerily screaming of them being kidnapped & killed somewhere off in the brush chilled me to my bones. Clearly the situation was deteriorating rapidly. I decided my girlfriend & I would skip camp the next morning & trek higher up the mountains to the north of the island away from all the bloodshed. In the nighttime I woke to strange noises & bright lights flashing over the giant mountain. This was perhaps a sign & we set off up the mountain. A few remaining select close friends who still retained some sanity also left with us. We trekked up the mountain for about a day being trailed by crazy locals & deranged former group members all through the jungle. We finally arrived at a cave where we hunkered down for the night. From the mountain cave entrance we could see nearly the entire island , even the town miles away down the coastline. Strange eerily sounds began coming from the depths of the dark eery cave. The following night as we hoped the ships had returned we began seeing flashes of light down by the old town. The lights seemingly began firing bolts of light into the town. Large explosions & fire began breaking out all over the town. The wailing of the dead & anguished carried for miles up the tropical mountain pass. While the town was seemingly being destroyed supernatural forces we hunkered deeper into the cave to not expose ourselves. While in the cave the lights began flashing close to the cave entrance. A few friends & my girlfriend were drawn to the lights as if a moth to the flame. I struggled to restrain my girl who it seemed had become taken over by another entity. Near the cave entrance we hid behind a rock & watched the supernatural spectacle. Through the light I could almost make out the outline of a alien time creature drawing my friends closer to the entrance. Suddenly a stream light & liquid was thrown onto 3 of my remaining friends. To my terror their skin was wiped cleaned from their bones in the mere seconds of the flash. Now terror consumed my heart as me & my girl cowered within the cave. The entity came deeper within the cave, the light coming closer. There was a sudden flash & then everything went dark. Silence. Nothing. Suddenly I rewoke, my eyes opened. I was back on the beach near the town with my entire group of friends still there alive as if nothing had happened. Nobody seemed to have remembered the horrors that had transpired during this last week. I looked my friend & she too had no idea of what just happened. We walked back into the cute shanty town. I felt like I had just seen everything & every thing was repeating itself. Then I began to see the lights flashing again. It had begun again…

For anyone wondering, the model and choreographer for the siren is Sara Silkin of the LA Contemporary Dance Company, and she has social media to follow.
I think that this lady of the lake had never really met another being properly. She ran on instinct, killing all humans who came near Then suddenly there is one man who isn't affected. Not only that, but he is covered in metal. Maybe he is the same as her. She is covered in gold. Her skin. Itself is scaled in gold, and he is covered in iron and steel. You can see her fascination when he is alseep. She rattled her skin and jewellery against his armour and seems to enjoy the fact thatbit sounds like metal on metal.
That is also an interesting point to be taken - that someone who cannot be affected by her voice, and resembles her in a certain way, must be somewhat like her.
@@luke14946 Yes but they died when she made her sirens call just like all the others. he didnt. he wasnt effected until he accidentally healed his deafness by drinking her blood. So for a moment she actually got to meet someone
@@luke14946 yes but like all the others before her, she sang and they died, the deaf soldier doesn't. She actually has a chance to meet a living person
I was playing pvp on Elden ring and saw someone cosplay as her in game, doing the fancy spin gesture to imitate her dance moves. I immediately switched to the most similar conquistador looking armor I had like the one Jibaro wore. Then they used the telescope tool from the lake in Liurnia to imitate the character peeping Jibaro. They did a really good job especially with using the frenzied flame scream and another scream based ash of war when we duelled, to keep with the theme of the cosplay. Whoever you are Jibaro Girl, if you’re reading this, it was a great fight and an awesome cosplay. Sorry I couldn’t use a greatsword like Jibaro, I was running an arcane build 😔
This story is a limitless tragedy. Clearly the first time she’s encountered a man who doesn’t succumb to her siren song. They both retreat, but she’s overcome with overwhelming fascination. Could this man love her? A warrior and a deity intertwined by a strange fate in the forest. But alas, they simply have no hope of coexisting. In likely her first ever attempt to show true affection, she draws blood simply by kissing him. She’s forever bound to her sunken shrine of the countless men she’s killed. He’s overcome by the greed of his inner conqueror. He defiles her and strips her of her beauty. She pulls him to a watery grave in her anguish and despair. The tragedy of this story is their mutual destruction of one another. Two predators consumed by themselves. This is true, undiluted art. The sort of creative expression that captures the inexpressible musings of the human psyche. I hope this wins the awards it deserves.
This, this comment right here. It has been written, word-for-word, exactly the same, on every, and I mean *EVERY* video about Jibaro, I've seen. I get that it's complimenting the short for what it is, but why copy and paste one instead of making your own?
the fact shes scared that her power is gone is so interesting. shes so visibly scared that the man isnt affected because she knows how weak she reallt is. without her voice a siren is but a mortal woman who stands no chance against a man his size. shes terrified that at any second she will succumb to the fate she delivers to others
For both the animator and performer, this is a standing ovation of the entire series. If this is all purely animated, this has to be countless, passionate hours of live recording to animation, well spent.
best CGI EVER!! full stop, in any kind of media, i literally thought they only used simulations for the death animations of the knights, and for the stylized faces, but its for EVERYTHING, everything is CGI.
@@wallingnaga6563 Its because many scenes were a combination/composition between real-life footage and some really realistic paintings(background). Its very often used than you would think . Such a masterpiece of many things involved.
After seeing the teaser for this season, I was waiting specifically for this episode, and it did not disappoint. SO beautiful, so enchanting. I chuckled when she couldn't understand why he wasn't ensnared by her song, I wept when she couldn't kiss him without hurting him, and I knew how big a mistake his actions would be in the end. Best episode since Sonnie's Edge.
I like to think that after the episode ended, she somehow took the conquistadors armour and moulded it to her body like the jewels and the gold So while she didn't look as beautiful, she ensured she couldn't be hurt like that again
It's in her nature as a siren to do what she had to do. Perhaps she was only defending her territory or that she was among the last of her kind. He, on the other hand, was the same as all the others that tried to conquer her. She was covered in gold and jewels-the embodiment of the pristine land and its resources-that the conquistadors greedily sought after to exploit. The context of the story is literally in the title. Jibaro is the name of the Indigenous Taíno People who historically live on the island of Borikén, present-day Puerto Rico, and it still is today to the people who live in the countryside. The conquistadors committed some of the most horrific human atrocities to these cultures, to all who are Indigenous to the Americas. Whenever gold was found, the colonizers swept into their territories and they indiscriminately slaughtered the Indigenous people for gold and land, and many times, for "Manifest Destiny" and "Doctrine of Discovery". This cruel cycle of greed, bloodshed, and hatred was repeated time and again since the first contact of 1492 in the Taíno and Kalinago Island chiefdoms to the Selk’nam Genocide and California Genocide in the 1850s onward.
On the last point you make, I hate to say it, but the behavior of the conquistadors is not unique. The cruel cycle of greed, bloodshed, and hatred you refer to is depressingly common across history and cultures. It is a sickness that is still with us and is the greatest challenge we as a species have ever faced.
@Filipe Almeida True, but it is still imperialist in nature, and imperialism is as old as the human race. Conquest and genocide on a large scale didn't start in 1492, and whenever evil emerges, it has almost always worn a human face.
Or maybe she stole all those jewels from the people she lured into the lake. She stalks Jibaro and sexually assaults him just beacuse he wasn't taken in by her charm and toxicity.
This story caught my eye bc the color scheme was reminiscent of Klint's painting The Kiss. After watching, I feel the siren's estetic was a nod to this beautiful painting.
Now i gotta say, this is among one of the best works of cgi that i have ever seen, but what really makes me immediately gain respect for their animators is that the animations were ALL HAND ANIMATED, no mocap at all, now sure they had references to base themselves off, but the fact that they didn't even bother having mocap is just insane.
@@naiknaik8812 No they actually didn't - multiple sources that worked on it said what they did was take video recordings, like say the person for the siren was filmed doing the dance and so on, and then they mapped the movements the "old fashioned" way.
@@MrRekash Yeah, you're right. I also just assumed it was mocapped, but looked up how it was made and like you said, they had reference video and mapped it all by hand to match. I'm not sure why they wouldn't just mocap it at that point, because of how time consuming and painstaking it must've been, other than to be impressive - but it is.
I seriously am obsessed with this beautiful and chaotic scene, it looks so real that I keep forgetting its an animation ,the woman is so hauntingly beautiful and creepy and I love it
First of all, the attention to detail (the beads, the armor, the movements) was so intoxicating. I watched it twice in a row and had to pause throughout the short to get a better look at the visuals. Man oh man! As an artist, this was pure eye candy! And the meaning of the story was just icing on the cake. This was a golden ticket that no one needs to touch! 🤌🏽
The freakiest siren I've ever seen, horrifying and repulsive. I like how they didn't try to make her beautiful, siren lore is monstrous. With all the deep bass and ecstasy of the camera work and carnage. God this scene was amazing.
I LOVE the noise the commander’s sword makes when it hits the armor. That’s what it sounds like in the live tournaments, not clanging. Wonderful attention to detail.
Mannnn fuck that siren, she would have killed him too if he wasn't deaf. He should have killed her for the safety of others, but like you said he was greedy and killed her for his own personal gain. ME? I would have killed that siren with GUSTO, the gold would have been a bonus.
The way the beats starts going, combined with the sirens dance moves that leads into her screech that then pulls everyone forward (Except for the deaf knight) has me on my knees. PERFECTION
In the end he was just like the rest of them. He wasn't special just because he couldn't hear her. He abused her and stripped her of herself almost. She rightfully destroyed them and she herself was left broken in the end. A lot of metaphor and the episode was pure, raw art in every possible way.
"Abused her" 🤨 Not really. Betrayed her, absolutely, but they've literally known each other for a single day. Abusive, to me, would be am extended period of time.
They both aren’t hero’s, she kills those men for their gold and visa versa. It reminds of seeing two predators prey on each other, you know they both are going to end up wounded and tangled with each other.
Uh... betrayed her? He had just watched as she killed all his friends. As for "he was just like the rest of them", I don't seem to recall the knights doing anything good or bad so I'm not sure how you can make a moral judgement.
Heard people talking about how intense this scene was and even some saying the episode was a sensory overload and I didn't want to spoil anything but just had to watch this and oh my god it's so intense I love it

@@princesspearl9131 I'm pretty sure she kills anyone that gets close to that area (that's why she is alone, and not belonging to any tribe), not only the "invaders" (That didn't seem to be invaders, since their clothes are from the medieval time).
@the fookin bass Funny that yet she considered to fuck with the "invader" of her lands. I do not know it that's just historical inaccuracy overall, or they really aren't the conquerors, since their uniforms are in controversy. The conquerors didn't dress like that; they had colorful clothes (mostly red and yellow), with feathers on the hat, spears and moskets. The horses are also using generic medieval caparisons. Even though the Morion helmet makes it contradictory, i don't think they are the conquerors.
I loved the part when she started questioning her own powers and at the end when she did her final dance. So much emotions, it's overwhelming, yet intriguing.
I love how helplessly the conquistadores are subdued to the Siren's bewitchment, and how they're being pulled, pushed and tossed around like a bunch of ragdolls. It's pure poetry.

I just keep watching this over and over again, I’ve always wondered in a world where mythical creatures existed Hollywood and the books never give them justice. This was so interesting to see a different and mesmerizing version of a Syran mixed with some historical moments and a deep lesson. This was so amazing
I love this concept. It captures the picture of insanity and temptation in its ancient form. The old myths of a Siren's Call, the insanity of fear in Pan's wild scream and many more of the mythological stories how sound and music made the human mind snap like dry twigs in a storm.
I love how distorted their faces look. The design choices are very interesting, the soldiers look human at first glance but once you pause and look closely they look as if you are seeing a human in a dream, or from an AI generator. Also, the faces of the conquistadores remind me of mexican masks mocking spanish conquistadores, you can find an infinite amount of samples in the mask museum from Zacatecas 🤔
i have watched this 10 times. This is by far my favorite episode of LDR. Second to the Marines in Afghanistan. She's absolutely mesmerizing. And the dance moves. MY GOODNESS. The music, the imagery, the haunting story. Watching the knights dance to their deaths. This was *chef's kiss* perfect. Those dance MOVES. 😍
There are not enough words to describe what I think of this scene but part where the man is being dragged underwater by the horse and her voice being muffled by the water as she submerges is haunting. The shift of sound, the shaky camera it's amazing
I was reading how much work the director had to do to get this just right from the locations (pretty much scouring the entire North Western hemisphere for forests with lakes) to the water detail and movements. Months and months of work for 15 minutes of truely beautiful artistic satisfaction. 😎
Unfortunately, most people or at least most people in the YT comment section haven't even bothered with Alberto Mielgo interviews. Many are going around parroting a theory they heard from another YT creators that they themselves didn't even bother to look/read the interviews either.
I had to watch this twice to finally understand the story. The first time I was distracted because I was so mesmerised by the Siren's dance. Very well choreographed. As haunting as the story and visuals are, I can't help but watch this episode over again in the season 3. It could've been a great love story, but because of their nature it ended up being a tragedy. Otherwise, very well done film.
i feel so bad for the other episodes of this season bc bro even if most of them are really good they cannot compete with this. im not saying anything new but the sound design+artistry of that whole scene...literally speechless

I've never been so instinctually attracted to a CGI character before. I'm not sure what kink this show unlocked, but if it's for a Siren, that surely can't be good.
@@BloodPaladin88 I guess it really wasn't - the director himself, plus other sources said they used reference video recorded of a real dancer, for example, doing the movements the "siren" character is doing and so on, but still mapped them out themselves to match that the old-fashioned way. 2 things I've always believed: she's dressed like that because she's been collecting gold and jewelry from the others she's been killed. And 2) I have no way to sustain this idea but I think her voice sounds like screams just to us, I mean, to the soldiers it must sound completly different, entrancing and maddening. To us, that we're not being "affected", it sounds just like screams.
A strange but satisfying performance. Never seen anything like it. Opens up the human mind that little step further thats for sure. Gotta thank the creators.
This distills or simplifies the complex human psyche into such a raw yet honest performance, for no words are actually needed; the body and it's movements carry so much more meaning than words ever will for this. Quite possibly one of the most memorable or THE most memorable scene to date ✨️ .
This is another banger from LDR but there were some real creative choices with the animation on this one. The majority of it has hard passed over the uncanny valley into looking realistic, but then some scenes like in this, especially when the priest turns around, look right out of a PS2 game. I love it.
There are a lot of beautiful shots too. I particularly like the knight floating about the horse as they are both sinking. Very striking visuals and movements.
Everything about this episode freaked me tf out lol the movements, the facial expressions, the camera work and angles. It was all so fucking strange but captivating. It was beautiful yet raw and unfiltered. It was definitely an experience.
Kinda ironic that I keep getting drawn back to this scene. Just all of it is so good! The hype music paired with her slow and alluring dance being cut with her scream. Her moves go from alluring and beckoning to tearing and ripping. Her scream blasting over the crowd and the trees, but instead of the men being pushed back by it, they're yanked forward. When the guards fall under the spell theres also a brief flash of drowning. Then the violent killing! Then when everyone is running to the lake! You see the siren running back with ease but the camera dips down to show the actual depth. God I just keep thinking ab this. The models for the men kind of border on being uncanny but the woman is rendered beautifully
Imagine meeting a 1970s Disney animator and showing him that this is what animation achieves 50 years later

She ran on instinct, killing all humans who came near
Then suddenly there is one man who isn't affected.
But the other men were covered in metal (plate armour),

Awwww
I hope you guys will play together again someday
This story is a limitless tragedy. Clearly the first time she’s encountered a man who doesn’t succumb to her siren song. They both retreat, but she’s overcome with overwhelming fascination.
Could this man love her?
A warrior and a deity intertwined by a strange fate in the forest. But alas, they simply have no hope of coexisting. In likely her first ever attempt to show true affection, she draws blood simply by kissing him. She’s forever bound to her sunken shrine of the countless men she’s killed. He’s overcome by the greed of his inner conqueror. He defiles her
and strips her of her beauty. She pulls him to a watery grave in her anguish and despair. The tragedy of this story is their mutual destruction of one another. Two predators consumed by themselves. This is true, undiluted art. The sort of creative expression that captures the inexpressible musings of the human psyche. I hope this wins the awards it deserves.

exactly it’s not beautiful and soft, it’s visceral, it sounds "violent" and demanding
the fact shes scared that her power is gone is so interesting. shes so visibly scared that the man isnt affected because she knows how weak she reallt is. without her voice a siren is but a mortal woman who stands no chance against a man his size. shes terrified that at any second she will succumb to the fate she delivers to others

Love that instead of just walking to her like a zombie like most siren stories are, they dance towards her like a crazy fiend.
When she was so confused because of the deaf knight, her expression looked so cute. Moreover, well, she did not kill some of the horses.
Pitiful, but not cute. They did a very good job at expressing her desperation and fear when her tricks didn't work.
More likely because the horses are unaffected by her siren call, than because she had any sympathy for them.
@@mecurian485 Right, they were just being ridden into the water
@@reachforthepieShe def looks cute to me😂😅
It's in her nature as a siren to do what she had to do.
The American empire carries on this legacy with pride.
@@Yet.Another.Rapper.KiG.V2 Yup, and they even take the time to screw over their own people on top of everyone else!

Very well put!
I love how distorted their faces look. The design choices are very interesting, the soldiers look human at first glance but once you pause and look closely they look as if you are seeing a human in a dream, or from an AI generator.

2:10 that lil squeak at the end is so damn cute
Your magic is over, biatch
The directors stated they wanted to tell a story about two predators preying upon each other. Inspired by European mythology, this was the result.
Name of the death dance song??? Im obsessed with everything about this chapter. Exquisite visuals, theme, choreography, story, colors, vibes!!!
When I watched this the first time I was so unsettled but I couldn’t look away it was so…I don’t even have words to describe it
Kinda ironic that I keep getting drawn back to this scene.
I can't get enough of this episode... it stayed with me...
Is amazing to think that none of what I am looking at is real, and that it was all created in CGi, such and epic production.
