The film asks "What do you see when you look into the face of a nightclub doorman?"

A London based doorman for a night-club relates the difficulties of the life and the real men behind the supposed thugs who keep the peace at clubs. In particular the ultimate dread - the ones who come back for more after hours.
Shown as part of the Birmingham Film Festival this short was one of eight to be shown that were produced by Screen West Midlands and were predominately set in the Midlands using Midlands based actors and crew. In the case of Bouncer this is partly true as the lead actor is famously from London, but it is set around the writer's experiences of working a night-club door in Coventry.
As such it brings out well the real feelings behind normal situations in their nightly job. The narration is a mix of hard man posturing and frank honesty. It works well and is involving even when not much appears to be happening. The direction is good and the sense of place is pretty good - only once did it look like a fake rather than a real street - although it may just have been the lighting as I think all the `external' was on location.
Winstone is solid in the role. His onscreen role is really emotionless on the whole, but his narration adds layers to it. The other characters do well and hold their own in similar roles alongside Winstone.

Geoff Thompson's ' Watch My Back' deserves a to be made into a decent British film. Amazing book. A must read for anyone who hasn't, the man is a 20th/21st century gentleman/guru
It has its called clubbed don't do the book justice but I feel it fills in a few missing parts from the book

I remember , before the film was cast , saying to Geoff " You know who you need to be the main man in this film ? " He said " Yeah - in my dreams." Then we both said together " Ray Winstone ." We both laughed , because Ray Winstone is a major actor; a star who works in multi-million dollar movies. About a week later Geoff phoned me - " Guess who we've got for the lead ." yup - Ray Winstone . Perfect.

Making an impression in a film that short is quite a challenge. Mr Thompson more than met it.
What an interesting and impressive man he is.
The only time I’ve successfully hidden fear was when I did my first gig as a stand-up comedian. My friends said they were blown away by how confident I was. And yet I was actually bricking it. But I knew I had to pretend to be in control.
Doing that in a literal life and death situation is awesome.

He's very adaptable is Ray, you never know what type of character he'll play next. That's why he's never type-cast. Said no one ever.

When the sun of culture shines low, even dwarves like Thompson will cast long shadows.
Yea, because speaking from my own experience with this person, you know pressure testing Thompson ... when the shit hits the fan, so to speak ... I can quite honestly say, he does not practice what he preaches.
And so you never walk alone, but without fake Thompson for sure...
His books aren't worth the money in the first place. And I grew tired of the Bafta ... blah blub ... Bafta ... blahblub ... Bafta ... blub
