- I decided to do a ground up build video of my homemade spotter - electric dent puller that I made from microwave Transformers. I figured in this video I would be able to address all of the questions that you may have. This is a pretty simple tool that is relatively easy to make with parts that could be easily acquired. Plus in this video I'm taking my existing spotter and adding some much needed features that will make it a lot more user-friendly.

I wonder how many folks, after watching this video, have been successful in building this project? We, my Son and I, really enjoyed the video and putting this project together. My son used this for his school science project and won 3rd place. But to be fair, he was not privileged in demonstrating the spotter in use. It was graded virtually and demonstration was not privileged by the judges. How unfortunate. I really believe if he were allowed to demonstrate this either in person or virtually, he would have won the state! Thank you once again, not only for this video but all your videos...... Oh wow Philip, that's totally awesome!!! I do feel honored that you guys used my video as an inspiration for the project... All of this virtual schooling is crap, got two of my kids doing it that way... Third place is still good, obviously not as good as second or first... I know there've been quite a few people that reached out to me thanking for giving them the idea, they were also successful in making their spotters.
It is an honor for us to have learned from you and your teaching. He was disappointed they did not ask questions but only looked at his pictures and paper work on his backboard via computer. It's a bummer that the kid couldn't show his project off to it's full potential... Maybe I'll think of something else to make and film, something that's cool enough to be used for a science project next year?

Thanks for this detailed video. I am building one to repair the damaged roof on my Silverado. I'm still building it but here are a few notes/ things I did differently. 1. I purchased a Rigid tool box to house all the components, the wire and the pieces to my welder handle. It will weight 50lbs+. It has a tray in the upper section for all the misc bits. 2. I purchased the PULLER ATTACHMENT in his list of items. It's well built, excludes instructions and seems like the right tool to use. 3. Not ALL micro transformers are SHAPED the same. Be sure to get 3 that are physically close to the same. A 4th one I picked up was turned 90 degrees and would have made the assembly tricky. Getting FREE microwaves is easy but takes some work, be sure to DISCHARGE the capacitor, it will kill you!. 5. Get the 25' wire, you will use approx 6 feet in the loop around the transformers. I started in the middle with attempts to equalize the wire ends. This is 2 Ought (2/0) wire, NOT 2AWG, don't get it confused. I bought the one he recommends on Amazon in RED. Have a can of silicone spray handy when pulling the wire. It's quite the workout. 6. I bought heavy duty C-Clamps at Harbor Freight to make the adjusters on the bridge. I cut off the C section and will just use the adjusters and feet. I haven't finished it yet but I like the T handle ends, seems like to would work better than having a wrench to turn a nut. 3 clamps would allow me to adjust all 3 sides, with the center being the most important. I'll extend the 2 ends with some rod as the clamp threads are too short this way. The swivel clamp feet also allow for adjustment feet against the body. Use some rubber pads on the 2 ends if you're worried about scratching paint or need traction. 7. I found a magnetic ground clamp on Amazon. It allows the ground point to stick magnetically, but it may still weld itself to the metal, I'll find out. Good luck building this. Will be a life saver for me. I'll report back when I have used it. There's always more than one way to go about just about anything. It's good that you're building this thing to suit your own needs in the way that you see fit. Because basically that's what I did when I built my tool. Let me know once everything is up and running 👍

That is amazing! There is a Tacoma in my side yard wrecked from a gentle roll over onto its side. I wasn't going to fix the dents because it needs a spotter to do it correctly. But now, absolutely I am going to fix that thing!

Very interesting step by step instructional video. This is certainly a massive upgrade from your first prototype. Hope you have better weather over there now that it's coming into spring. Fall just started here in Australia and we finally had some really good rain here in our area after the worst drought we've experienced in the 27 years that we've lived here. The bushfires are also finished and people can start rebuilding.

This is my go to tool for sheet metal work... Not sure how I got by without it before I got this one built. I've actually made some upgrades to my spotter. Mainly the electronics got replaced with something much, much better. I'll do a video on that a bit further down the road

excellent video Mr, Fix206 , this works for sure and works like a pro. the only thing its missing is the fan that pro machines have , I think the microwave fan can be added for shrinking to keep the transformers cooler .
I've actually done testing sometime ago to figure out whether the fan is needed or not, and after some work under heavy load the transformers got just slightly warm to the touch, that's why I figured that I probably wouldn't need a fan in there. I suppose if you had a really big project that you were working on where you had to spend about an hour working on a panel nonstop, then you would probably benefit from adding a fan to the set up.

Yeah man, the more transformers you got the more powerful of a setup you get. With one of these units there's always room for expansion, unlike with factory built ones that were not meant to be upgraded in any way 👍

Thanks for the follow up on your build. I was thinking the whole time with your first version that a trigger switch to a relay on the 120v ac side would be great. You did it one better with the timer relay. Very nice. I think you forgot to list the relay for the AC line voltage. You also included a circuit breaker that I didn't see in the build. Still a good idea for safety. I don't know the amperage draw on all three transformers. Another option you could try is replacing the potentiometer on the timing relay board with wires to a rotary potentiometer mounted through the tool box. That way you could have an easily accessible dial to adjust the spotter timing. And the switched relay is 3 to 32 volts dc on the trigger side and 120 Volts/ 40 Amps on the load side. You used a CRYDOM solid State Relay model D1240 The "D" I think denotes DC on the trigger side, the "12" refers to 120 Volts Ac, and the "40" refers to 40 amps. So D1240
I actually bought a potentiometer a while back, I might still add it to the setup later on :)

@@swissict92 everything is on ebay here . Didnt check anything on amazon because i mainly uses ebay. Also all parts are there. For example time delay circuit, solid state relay, thermal switch breaker, wire cable , plugs , connectors, microwave switch, toggle switch etc... just search it on ebay should come up. My 3 microwave transformers came today so just waiting for the rest. Thanks

very nice built only i can say that most welding machines have a fan to keep the transformers cool , with a larger box you can add this fan to help with that ,
I suppose if you wanted to, you could add a fan, however I don't really see a need in it, because when you're welding something with a welder you could be running a continuous bead for a couple of minutes. In that time the transformer will start heating up and if the fan is running in that instance it would certainly help with cooling. But when I'm using the spotter, the pulse duration is just about half of a second long. And this is something that I've tested in the past where I worked an entire panel and then touched the transformers right after to see if they were warming up and they were still cold. So in my opinion the use of fan with this set up would be an overkill.

Thanks for posting Thinking I'm going to make me one. Just one thing you could wire it just to use one or two of the transformers for lower amps to use it to do something else like spot welder.
Instead of 2 or 3 of them running all the time, you can always cut the power to the transformers you don't want to use and I just keep one of them powered up, and later as you'll need more power just reconnect the other ones.
sounds like the use of another toggle switch. 1-2-3 transformers at the flip of a switch

Wow I think this is the best video of how to build a dent puller on UA-cam. I have started mine today but I’ll be using only 2 transformers since we have 220v here in Italy instead of 110v. I was wondering if you are willing to share a simple wiring diagram that I can follow , I think it would make this diy project tutorial 200% complete🤣🤣🤣

I'm glad you liked the video... I know that there are spotters that can work with aluminum, the process is similar, but there are some differences. It's actually something that I've briefly looked into some time ago because I was curious myself. As I do more research later on I may do an updated video on whatever modifications I would have to do in order to make my tool be compatible with aluminum.
I would like to give you an update. I have my three transformers and all else is on order! I am very excited. I want to ask your thoughts. Hypothetically, let's say you or I had a 55 chevy to work on, being the metal is much thicker on such an older vehicle, would it be good to add another transformer for thicker metal? Four transformers or perhaps even five? I realize this is reaching but I think it is an interesting question? lol. Thank you again. Phillip Hall

Hello.I just built 1 identical and the solid state relay it’s burning easy(not working with transformers) because the electric of transformer it’s coming back to relay(he has no one to consume the current and returns back to the relay). From the rest all good. Nice video
Try to use a solid-state relay that is rated for higher amperage than the one that you are currently using... If that fails you can also use a contactor relay

Add a digital thermostat switch to see temp and turn on fan if it gets too hot. Also a digital voltage and Amp display.
Even after heavy usage I've only been able to get the transformers slightly warm to the touch. They may get hot if I had to work an entire pickup bedside or something else of that magnitude. But after using this tool for over 4 years now I never felt the need for any sort of cooling... Same goes for voltage/amp display, there's really no need for any of it.

Hi completely incredible video. Thank you. I just have one question. I have made one with one transformer and a switch directly hooked up to one of the power lines from the 120v input. Is there a problem with this setup bc of your timer circuit. Is there a real need for it. And y. Thx in advance
I suppose you can run it that way for time being. I personally wouldn't recommend it because you are basically running the whole 120 V through a simple switch that wasn't designed to carry that's much voltage/current. Believe it or not that's how I ran my very first set up but have since upgraded it to the state that you see it in right now. In my opinion the way that everything is set up right now is much better/safer.

I ordered the 12v timer relay from the link in the description. With the CK connection I got a delayed turn ON, then continuous power. I had to use the CB connection to get the delayed OFF that Fix206 used for this project. I hooked it to a 12v computer fan to test the delay, as I did not have a 12v led to use. Also, the timer has a light that tells when power is applied and one that lights when it energizes the relay.
On another note, does it matter which wire of the power cord goes where? The black "hot" wire should go to the breaker and the white "common" connect to the red wires in his diagram? Or does it matter because it is AC current? Anyone grounding the green wire, and if so, where?

Using slightly different size transformers is just fine, they will basically balance each other out in the end
Thank you for video. best video ever.. My electricity is 240v, I used a thick wire (175mm2) and I got over 500amps from a single transformer at 2.2vac. Do you think I should use two transformers or use a smaller wire with three transformers?
Even if you are on 240 V do everything exactly the same as I did in my video. Use as thick of a cable as you possibly can to make the same amount of windings as I did in my video. And once again for best results go ahead and use three transformers

El amperaje es 800-1000 amperios, y usted no consigue electrocutado. Esta herramienta es segura de usar
