This may seem like an odd channel recommendation, but your idea of the true self as the inner compass reminded me of Shelise from Cults to Consciousness here on UA-cam, who always talks about finding and/or regaining individual sovereignty and listening to our inner voice/inner knowing. Thanks for reviewing this book. I really relate to your childhood experience. Both of my parents were this way and I think that I could really benefit from reading this book. It is actually something that I still deal with daily since my Mother lives with us as well.
I found the book so helpful. I initially read the e-book version and practically highlighted the entire book. The book was very validating in terms of the way I've been feeling lately. I'm still making my way through the 2nd book I read (I'm taking a break to read some fiction as it's been a while), but I'm looking forward to picking it back up again.
