LOVE everything in this episode Lily! Just, wow. Thank you so much for sharing your creative process, your favorite things, and approach to the perfectionism streak - I was nodding along to everything you said! Bird by Bird has been on my to read list forever. I'm saying now 2025 is the year I read it!❤
This is SO exciting. I really do believe in the just getting it out there, starting somewhere, being ok with a crappy first draft. Yes! I’m cooking up a concept, not a knitting design, but fiber related, that I believe in and will be talking to some people about. And I feel a little intimidated. I’m new to the fiber world. Your thoughts here, expressed out loud, has boosted my confidence!
I have thoroughly enjoyed your podcast today. I wrote down your favorite things for knitters. I also wrote down Ann Lamont book. My daughter is a professor and she dabbles in some writing on the side. Just a great idea for a little extra Christmas gift.
Thank you! Wishing you the best in your sweater design adventure and I hope your son loves the one he's getting - so sweet to hear what a fan he is of your making for him. I loved hearing about your favorite things!
Ahh such lovely knits, as always 💕 I'm so excited that the hat is taking off by storm! I'm still on the hunt for the perfect hat so I'll give it a try! I am so excited for your sweater design! I do have a very knit-worthy sister with a 60-62" bust, and I know that is often a size that is tough to find testers for so......I'm available in Jan/Feb! I am exactly the same way where I have to talk things out. I'm convinced that hearing myself say my thoughts sends it through auditory processing and puts it in a different part of my brain. I'm sure it's just that there's so much bouncing around that it's nice for an idea to be outside of my head, if only for a little while haha.
Always refreshing to listen to your take on making. Can’t wait to see your project work up in that Sonder Yarn combo - I recently used her fingering weight with Halo in a project and every time I wear it someone stops and asks me about it.
I’m in awe of the design process and how designers plan the delightful sweaters etc that us knitters so love to cast on. Love your podcast. Just casting off a Christmas stocking for one son in law. 1more to knit. Keep on chatting and talking through stuff. I so enjoy it. ❤
Ah! Thank you so much! And I just love making Christmas stockings, truly one of my favorite projects! How marvelous that you're making them for your family. What beautiful gifts! 💖
Love the recs! Bird by Bird and her words of wisdom are exceptional tenets. I wavered on the Merit specials in Nov and didn’t purchase. Will have to reconsider. I really just want that caramel corduroy bag. 😂 Looking forward to your sweater design. Cheers!
Right?! The accessories are really lush! I love the makeup sticks, lips, and blushes, but I will say that the mascara isn’t for me-though some folks love it!
Congratulations 🎉 on your hat! Love your mod #18 awesome! Love your cloud sweater. The fashion color is burgundy I read is the color for winter this year so you in style girl lol. I think Jody of Grocery’s Girls showed hers this week and it was done in Drops Air. You yarn is beautiful I think but understand how you feel just go with it. You can always make another.
Woot woot! Thank you so much! And I definitely will finish and wear with love. I do adore the color and I am guessing when it’s done I’ll wear it constantly! Big hugs! 🤗
@ looking forward to your sweater pattern. I am new to fitted garments so have done a sweater and vest by a couple designers that film how to knit their pattern step by step here on youtube. It helps them sell their patterns and helps people learn. I am so insecure to buy a pattern and read and understand it by myself. I don’t have anyone I can go to to help me. Wish I had aunt or grandma or friend that knits. Have a happy Holiday 😊
It’s so true that pattern reading is its own skill! Maybe I should do a video on that someday! Congratulations on your knitting journey, and big hugs! 🥰
I loved hearing about your design process and am super excited about the sweater. I have pretty square shoulders and find some types of sweaters just don’t fit right. I would love to test it! I’m working on a test for Alicia Plummer right now, as well as multiple Christmas gifts (hello five Ranunculus sweaters for my bookgroup). I love watching knitting podcasts while knitting so I’m looking forward to your podcast list next time. Oh, and I went right over to Amazon and added a couple of things to my cart 😂
Thank you for the kind words about the design process! So many thoughtful knitters, I feel inspired! And 🤩 Wow, five Ranunculus sweaters! That's amazing! You are such a good friend.
I've knit with the big birdie and it's my most worn sweater. It's the coziest sweater, absolutely next to skin soft. I made the Fancy sweater after seeing the multiple versions that Leslie Friend made.
Absolutely! I think much of mine is ingrained by academia, in fact! I have to be so exact in my work life, dates and names and references throughout history. But working directly with artists has really helped me see the differences between exacting perfection and creative goals! 💗
Hi Lily, Re your Big Birdie question, I haven't used Big Birdie, but I have used Farmer's Daughter Oh Dang DK in Andrea Mowry's oversized drop shoulder recent release (sorry, forgetting the name) and feel the same as you -- it's scruffy but delightful for a casual oversized item, as this is for me. I also knit Andre's Brume using Oh Dang, but I doubled the thinner version instead of using DK, and it solves the scruffy-ness problem! Love your episodes and congrats on your successful pattern release!
Hey! I’m only a few minutes into the episode and wanted to comment on the Suri DK before I forget. And as you were talking (or thinking through talking) more, you mentioned something related to my thought. :) The suri at that bulky weight will likely stay “scruffy” as you describe; I don’t think you’ll get even stockinette stitch, if that is what you prefer. My suggestion is to try the reverse side as the “right” side. The purl bumps will likely make a fabric your eye likes better, and it also helps any semi tonal dye or speckled yarn to look more visually blended. And as you mention the Weekender, note that it’s knit for the reverse side to be the “right” side. I have a very oversized sweater WIP in suri DK that I’m changing to be purl side out. Also going to throw it in the dryer so some of that fluff will stop flying around my house and stick to everything. 😂
LOVE everything in this episode Lily! Just, wow. Thank you so much for sharing your creative process, your favorite things, and approach to the perfectionism streak - I was nodding along to everything you said! Bird by Bird has been on my to read list forever. I'm saying now 2025 is the year I read it!❤
You are so kind, thank you! I'm always thrilled to hear when something resonates, it makes it all worthwhile! 🙏

Great episode. Loved the favorite things at the end. Best wishes for your new design.

Love to hear this! I’m excited for it!
I agree with you on Big Birdie. I don’t like how my stitches look even after blocking.
I may try to turn it inside out and wear it in reverse stockinette based on a great comment here! And good to know 👍
It doesn't matter if I'm not a perfectionist in my jobs, but I want my surgeons to be perfectionists.
Absolutely! I think much of mine is ingrained by academia, in fact! I have to be so exact in my work life, dates and names and references throughout history. But working directly with artists has really helped me see the differences between exacting perfection and creative goals! 💗

Oh Dang, that's really helpful to know, 😂Seriously, thank you for the tip! 🤗
I am verbal or external processor too… not for everything but for many things I just need to talk it through ❤❤❤
Exactly! It really makes a difference in how I see the world, and plan next steps!
Hey! I’m only a few minutes into the episode and wanted to comment on the Suri DK before I forget. Oh my goodness! This might be it exactly! And yes I will absolutely give the reverse side a try. Truly a game changer! Thank you!! 🙏
Great episode, already added a couple things to my Amazon cart! Side note, what is your wall paint color behind you? Love it!
I’ll check! I do absolutely love it!
I do the same thing.... my family calls it "thinking out loud."
Exactly! 💕
Why don’t you block the magenta sweater now to see if you’ll like the finished fabric.
Great idea!
