The problem with Cousins was his paycheck was too high to pay to an offensive line stout enough to protect a non mobile quarterback. Hopefully Sam can weigh out a successful formula. Sam landed in a sweet space and time where he could let his talent flourish.
Sam Darnold has started his last 4 (and that's just from memory there may have been more) post game on field interviews with these words "there's no team I would rather play for than the MN Vikings"... He hasn't priced himself out of anything..
Been a Vikings fan for 30 years. Two teams stand out to me, the 98 and 09 teams. The 98 team had great talent. But they were front runners. When they got pressed in the biggest game of the year, players (not just Gary Anderson) and coaches melted down. The 09 team statistically dominated the saints in the nfc championship game. Again, big time guys melted down on the biggest stage. Peterson seemed to have butter on his hands; Percy Harvin was a non factor; Favre drove this team down the field at the end but threw an interception that will be clowned in perpetuity. This team has a tough road to make the superbowl whether they get the top seed or not. I’d like us to finally be the team who rises up to win the biggest games rather than find new and more outrageous ways to blow playoff games. I’d love if they can do this and Darnold leads the charge, then I’m all for breaking the bank to re-sign him. If not then sign Daniel Jones to a reasonable deal, then have him and JJ compete for a starting spot next season and use the salary cap money to make critical roster upgrades
Love Sam. I'm one of the few who expected a career year out of him. Maybe not this good but I was very optimistic. JJ getting hurt was probably the best thing for Sam and the team as a whole. I trust KOC to make the right decision in the off-season whatever that is.
The NFL is a business sure but that does not really mean every player has that mentality. Being on a team that can win a Superbowl is a driving factor. Teams in need of a quarterback next year may have the money but the chance of being put in another bad situation is high.

That would be a Giant sized Saquon and McKinney error. Kwesi always surprises us with deals that we don't expect at much lower numbers than we thought possible, and yet here everyone goes again. Kwesi doesn't interrupt the season. There is no controversy. JJ knew his deal would get done. We didn't hear a squeak from Darrisaw. We never even considered Zadarius was a possibility. I’m a Steelers fan…so it’s obvious why I’m very interested in what the Vikes do about Darnold. Unless he totally flops in the playoffs, I don’t see how the Vikes justify letting him walk. JJ can sit for 2 more years
Darnold will go to either the 49ers or Rams. Purdy will have to decide whether he wants his career payday or something a bit team friendly to remain in San Francisco. If he demands perceived market value, then I fully expect Darnold to be offered the same deal offered to Purdy and first to sign is their starter. I don’t think the Vikings will use any tags to force Darnold to stay, unless it is agreed as part of a sign and trade scenario. KOC has too much respect for Darnold to stand in his way to maximise his earnings potential, knowing that a poor showing in 2025 will crater any similar opportunities in the future.

What complicates this even more (if Darnold finishes the season strong) …is that everyone in that locker room now believes they are a win now team. Now KOC and Kwesi is supposed to tell them we’re rolling with essentially an unproven rookie QB coming back from a significant injury because he’s “my guy”. Well good luck with that. JJ, KOC, and Kwesi will feel a tremendous amount of pressure to be really good and really fast. If there’s growing pains….the players in the locker room and the fans….will quickly go to “we had a chance to win it all with Sam and you threw it away to develop “their guy””. Again everything I’m saying is dependent on how Sam plays the rest of the season. The narrative could quickly change if he plays poorly. But what I said becomes even more obvious if Sam plays really well.
That’s what’s so unfair , the moment Darnold has a 2022 Vikings @ Bills, Josh Allen fumble + multiple interceptions game, everyone will come and say ….. “SEE???? TOLD YA 💯” The only thing that worries me about Sam is holding on to the ball too long. It’s to the point where you can predict a random sack on 3rd n long. But that may change with more experience in this offense and with these players. That’s another thing no one talks about. This isn’t a finished product. This is year 1. With a brutal dead cap # , and a new QB, with a new offense, with new players/teammates. Year 2 in this offense with upgrades RB1 and RB2 + a better WR3/PR/KR specialist , could be absolutely lethal.
@@MINNESOTA_PTSD agree 100%! He's never been in the same offense with the same offensive coordinator for 2 years. I'm curious to see what that produces. And yes, he does hold the ball too long.....he loves the big play and could do a better job at checking down to the short pass at times. I am seeing some improvement there. But I also think KOC loves the long plays and the offensive play calling at times could do a better job at keeping defenses honest by developing more of a quick/short passing game. And yes, ANY mistakes he makes will be overblown while other top QBs are given the benefit of the doubt.
The biggest risk isn’t whether JJ actually has the talent… I trust KOC to know. The biggest risk is whether his knee is now a chronic career-killer along the lines of Sam Bradford.
Vikings own all the chips. Four QB’s in the building, yes McCarthy is the long term answer but tag and pay same or pay and trade him. Daniel Jones would be a great backup
Also, didn't a 10+ win team miss the playoffs one year but they were also 3rd in their division? Granted, the old Wildcard structure and 16 games. I'm thinking Manning Colts, Jags, and Titans. Hmmm?
For starters, because Sam is now proven and JJ still isn't. And because if you keep Sam and end up with two proven QBs you can trade one for the farm. The Texans got three 1sts and three day 3 picks for DeShaun Watson - how do you think a 23 year old JJ would like three extra elite 1st round players on the roster with him for 4 years. Take the short sighted blinkers off and consider the wider and longer term possibilities.
Darnold has been through 1000 times more adversity than McCarthy has ever thought about, and has come out tremendously. Nobody knows how McCarthy will do when he's getting his behind kicked by NFL linemen, or how he'll bounce back from a 3 pick game, hard times, etc. Darnold's experience is a huge factor as well, the good and the bad. The Vikings are in a "win now" mode, so can they really chance having a rookie start at QB? Most drafted QB's don't turn out so great, so the odds of McCarthy being a franchise type QB are not that great.
@jiordone8563 exact same conversation about why we shouldn't have moved on from Kirk. Trust KO and kwesi. They picked the kid, and they'll get the most out of him
@@BM-si2ei but they already got the most out of Sam so why wouldn’t you stick with Sam and continue to get the most out of him? In fact, we don’t even know if this IS the most out of Sam.
He was always the plan - he was signed within hours of Kirk leaving. He only became an option after they drafted JJ, but that is because having JJ then created 2 options and multiple plans and opportunities. Now they have Daniel Jones too, so they have even more options and opportunities. There is more than one path to chose...
The Vikes are extremely unlikely to qualify for any Comp picks. They have very few players that they will not extend that are likely to reach the contract threshold in FA, and are expected to be big spenders in FA. Comp picks are a red herring. Almost certainly not happening.
It’s a bad business decision to sign Sam to a long term deal. I have the upmost confidence that KOC can get this kinda production from Daniel Jones. JJ needs to prove he can last a whole season. But to sign Sam to a huge deal is such a bad idea.
You want a franchise quarterback and it doesn’t matter how you get him. Sam’s not going to chase the money to go to another Jets situation. He wants to stay in Minnesota and you can get him on a team friendly deal. Why would you give up Sam who’s playing the best football of his career because you HOPE KOC can get the same production from Daniel Jones?
Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Josh Rosen, Justin Fields were all on cheap rookie contracts. The objective is to find a top 5-10 QB, not a cheap rookie contract. JJ will still be on a cheap rookie deal at the end of Sam's two year extension.
@@jiordone8563 Yeah, just to illustrate the point of how difficult it is to find a guy that actually works out. And most of them were rushed in early which is what most of these muppets defaulting to JJ are advocating. I'm confident that JJ will be very, very good, but we don't have to even find out right now, because Sam is playing at an elite level. The Vikes can have their cake and eat it too. There is just a significant group of Vikes fans that lack the imagination or conceptual ability to understand that. I'm 100% positive that Kwesi and KOC have this all sussed and had this prospect and the solutions mapped out even before the season started. Sam will be extended on a short 2-3 year team friendly deal. Book it. I wouldn't even discount Jones being extended as QB3 too, and traded long before Sam is. Skol!
OP we don’t know what the Viking’s know I get that but they don’t know everything As far as tag and trade I think we should hold on to SD hold on to him as long as we need to - as in hold onto him even in 2015 Younger cheaper - I sincerely believe McC is the real deal - let’s roll with SD even next year yes one more year
This is dumb. We have the franchise tag as leverage. A 40 mil deal may be a bargin. You found a top 10 qb borderline top 5. Trade McCarthy. Pretty obvious.
The franchise tag carries a reputational penalty in general, and it disrupts the relationship with the player specifically. It's an option they have, but it's not something to deploy without significant consideration.
@@BM-si2ei Which is why Sam will sign a team friendly extension lower than the tag. How many times does he have to say he wants to stay before folks believe him? He's had the dumpster fire experience. He can chase money after he's finished his rehab with KOC.
@robe2504 saying"I like it here" and taking tens of millions less, with fewer years, virtually never happens. This is a fan fantasy that plays out in our heads, not in real life.
@@BM-si2ei His choice is $41m for 2025, or probably something like $70m for 2 years, and some influence over where he is traded. Tell me how that equals tens of millions less and fewer years?
JJ McCarthy hasn’t proven anything this season. He hasn’t even taken a regular season snap. Sam may have earned that paycheck and he deserves it. But I don’t think he’s going to take the payday just to go to another shitty organization.
You people even talking about letting Sam go need to Stop!!!! A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!!! Money is irrelevant!!! You found your QB! Hello??

Who the hell is this guy? He acts like he KNOWS what the Vikings will do. Plans change. You could say that every team who picks a first round QB picked “their guy”. And how often does “their guy” not work out? Bottom line….you can only HOPE that JJ plays as well as Sam. Secondly, Sam could have become not only KOCs guy….but also the guys in that locker rooms guy…and that matters more than you think. Bottom line, Sam wants to stay with the Vikings, and so if the Vikings want to keep him……they’ll be able to. The Vikings can and will pay Sam if they feel like he’s the guy. Again…plans change. It’s no guarantee Sam will stay. But I also think your take is nonsense. I think if Sam continues to play as he has been playing the last 6 games…..I’d say there’s a 50/50 chance he stays. If he exceeds expectations and they make it to the Superbowl, that obviously changes things. If he throws up a stinker and is the reason the Vikings lose…..that changes things. No matter how KOC or this guys FEELS about JJ and his skill set….he hasn’t played in the NFL. He hasn’t proven how’d he respond to high pressure situations. He hasn’t won his teammates over. All of that matters.
NO WAY they don't resign him, did the Rams get rid Warner or did the Patriots get rid of Brady? Please! If they get rid of him and McCarthy doesn't pan out, that's their jobs!
Stop the cap!!! Everyone knows Sam Darnald will not be a viking next year. The Vikings have all the leverage. Tag him! His agent will not take that chance of injury or bad play. Example cousins. Let his agent know to include two 1st round picks while he's shopping. The system is the success. JJ is the future.
1:41 Why does #greed have to be so high everywhere in the NFL? Why does the formula dictate anything? A 30 million one year contract should be enough with incentives for each postseason game started and won!
Sam will get paid and good luck to him wherever he goes
In Darnold we trust JJ is unknown.
I put $50 before tge season started that the Vikings will win the Super Bowl, if they win I get $5,050.🏈🏆💰
They were willing to give the extra 1st for Drake Maye and allowed the possibility that anyone would take JJ top nine.
I’ll do respect, but you’re working completely on your Sam Donald take. Have a great day.. and merry Christmas
Hmmm?
The 2008 Patriots went 11-5, and missed the playoffs. That’s the last that I remember.
We went with unproven Darnold this year, why wouldn’t we go with our “unproven” 1st round hand picked and moved up in the draft to get franchise QB?
Correct thinking
Darnold taking 50 million to go someplace and play for someone who is not Kevin O’Connell is going to be the most Vikings thing ever
He won’t do it.
Vikings are going to have to pay a minimum of 100 Million over 2 years most likely 155 over 3 years
I LOVE U WUKE WRAUN!!
Vin ginkel signed multi year so did phillips but why worry focus on the now
Extending Sam was never the plan but rather an option
He was always the plan - he was signed within hours of Kirk leaving. He only became an option after they drafted JJ, but that is because having JJ then created 2 options and multiple plans and opportunities. Now they have Daniel Jones too, so they have even more options and opportunities.
There is more than one path to chose...
If they want anything for Dan Jones he has to be on the active roster for 1 game. Kwesi is a business guy and will want at least a comp for him.
The Vikes are extremely unlikely to qualify for any Comp picks. They have very few players that they will not extend that are likely to reach the contract threshold in FA, and are expected to be big spenders in FA. Comp picks are a red herring. Almost certainly not happening.
Vikings will franchise tag Darnold and pay him $39 mil for 2025.
Is Daniel Jones next years Sam Darnold?
I want to sign Darnold two years for like 37-42 million per year no matter what happens. I wonder of we could get trade picks for Daniel Jones.
If you re-seeded the playoff picture, it wouldn't make sense to play your supposed rivals twice every year.
Is it all bout money or does coaching and team matter
Long term plan buy a big animal in free agency and spend money on corner upgrade
Leave the past in the past.
JJ is on a cheap rookie contract. It comes down to money. Sam will be gone making big money somewhere else. 😢
Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Josh Rosen, Justin Fields were all on cheap rookie contracts. The objective is to find a top 5-10 QB, not a cheap rookie contract. JJ will still be on a cheap rookie deal at the end of Sam's two year extension.
@@robe2504 you just named very few from a really long list.
long list of guys who didn't make it I should say.
Skol!
OP we don’t know what the Viking’s know
I get that but they don’t know everything
As far as tag and trade I think we should hold on to SD hold on to him as long as we need to - as in hold onto him even in 2015
Younger cheaper - I sincerely believe McC is the real deal - let’s roll with SD even next year yes one more year
This is dumb.
I agree 100%.
We'll see won't we
Tagging and trading Darnold is how the Vikings to recoup draft capital for moving up to get McCarthy. 💜
Did you even listen to the show? No other teams are gonna play ball with that. This ain’t the NBA
@ Lmaooo I posted this. Before he said 🤣🤣🤣
Sam is why the vikings are 13 - 2
KOC is the reason the Vikings are 13-2. Sam has been awesome, but he did this with Kirk. He can do it with JJ I suspect
: Darnold earned the kind of pay check we wont match .Daniel jones is an ace in the hole.Jj is a winner..whatever happens we are in good hands..
guys like Matt Leinart were winners as well, doesn't always translate to the NFL.
JJ McCarthy hasn’t proven anything this season. He hasn’t even taken a regular season snap. Sam may have earned that paycheck and he deserves it. But I don’t think he’s going to take the payday just to go to another shitty organization.
Lucky season
You people even talking about letting Sam go need to Stop!!!! A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!!! Money is irrelevant!!! You found your QB! Hello??
This is all reckless speculation. Only for those that have nothing else to do.
Welcome to UA-cam, you must be new here
Win the SB he stays
Look Sam if you want a big Contract then WIN A SUPER BOWL! IF YOU DON’T WIN A SUPER BOWL NO BIG CONTRACT IT’S THAT SIMPLE SO Go Sam Darnold WIN A DAM Super Bowl and you could get that big Contract otherwise no Big Contract.
He's already guaranteed a huge contract if he didn't play another down this season.
Does that apply to JJ, or do you just go with JJ whether he can play or not??
Go check the houston texans stroud on rookie deal and their roster specifically O-line is trash
Wth did you just say???
NO WAY they don't resign him, did the Rams get rid Warner or did the Patriots get rid of Brady? Please! If they get rid of him and McCarthy doesn't pan out, that's their jobs!
Brady was McCarthy in this analogy. And the Rams did get rid of Warner.
The plan never included bringing Darnold back after 2024.
Get some great middle line guys to help the team and d’Arnold #Dartsinator have all the time he needs to find the open guys that are well enough compen$ated. Greed will kill the best teams!
You'd choose the highest contact available if you had to option too.
Trade McCarty for 2 pick take Travis hunter
Travis Hunter is a terrible choice
Lol lol...all you football prognosticators......guessers.......you guys keep doing that stupid stuff...and, you're never right. Darnold is going no where.... he'll be a Viking for a good while
Your confidence in an unlikely outcome is dumbfounding. For your own good please don’t gamble
You prognosticators are wrong and dumb! Now listen to my wrong and dumb prognostication!
