Canadian debates have typically been far better: more informative, respectful and dignified, and actual debates over policy. That said, we are hardly immune to the pernicious influence of the American proclivity toward paranoia and vindictiveness.
Heres an inside scoop, the moderator was david johnston, the person who later became the governor general who was recommended by none other then stephen harper, a conservative.
You had an option, sir: you didn't have to listen to Frank Moores and take his money! You didn't have to take the $300K Airbus cash kickback! You didn't have to commit fraud, graft and tax evasion!

@@broadstreet21 Chretien likely doesn't stand out as much in the clip because even though Day was trying to score on him (addressing him directly), Joe Clark was more efficient in mocking the lameness of Day's stunt.
@@brycemcneil4404 True. Clark was probably the best debater that night, but it didn't translate into seats. In fact, Chretien, I find, often had been out-debated come campaign time, despite his feisty persona in the House of Commons. Didn't really matter, not if the opposition was fighting each other.
@@brycemcneil4404 Yeah, except I thought in his first debate in 1993, he was out-debated so badly. NDP leader Audrey McLaughlin shot what sounded like a knock-out line, "You didn't defeat NAFTA, your party stayed home." I wanna see the 1873 televised debate.
+leafyutube I hear that the 1867 televised debate was better.
Yeah, would've been great to see them. Unfortunately, televisions, motion pictures and radios had not been invented yet
@@schnuurtchke are you sure?

I liked when Stockwell Day said to Joe Clark: "Thank you, Joe. You had 30 years to make your point. I'll take 30 seconds to make mine."
Canadian Politics is something between British and American.
Mulroney was a heck of a scraper and clever in his prime . These old debates make me long for real leadership
How DO the 1980's debates look like they're from roughly the same year as the 2000 debate? lol
VHS tapes probably?
Kurtis Lachance exactly this. VHS cameras didn’t change much in quality from their introduction to discontinuation
RIP PM Turner
~~Signed, an American
basically the last time Mulroney ever held any high moral ground
No he did when he publicly chewed out his own daughter for backing Ford's notwithstanding clause crap.
After the late-Sept. 2020 USA debacle debate, this civility, even in disagreement, make me nostalgic.

Mulroney had options too...but he chose money and power and US cronyism. Thanks for nothing.
RIP John Turner
Respect from the UK
0:53 - Mulroney actually spoke out of turn, the moderator should have cut him off and say, time to move on.

@@g-guy0286 True, I realized that. His failure to rein in Mulroney makes him look incompetent. And then he became GG. Humph.

its funny because Mulroney was the one that sold out
And Jack Layton . Dam I wish he was around to see what’s going on now
Mulroney ended up taking airbus money while in office but insisted it wasn’t illegal 😅

Layton got away with a murder 😂😂😂😂
woow the debates are so civil compared to now like what happened?
Trump happened.
Entertainment happened. Everyone, everywhere want to be entertained.

Bingo!
Brain Mulroney has high moral .
Some reason I don’t like his political policies .
Anyway rest in peace

Can someone please fire Don Martin?

What is "all the way"? Sex?
Last time I checked, 25 years after Mulroney, Canada's still here and doing better than ever. So bodistava99, you don't make any sense
No Chretien? 10 years as PM.
