  • To understand Paris is to understand its past, things remembered and things forgotten.
As we walked across this amazing city in the rain we discovered a small necropolis (necro= dead & polis = city), part of which is situated under a bridge in a long abandoned quarry. It is called Cimetière de Montmartre.
This cemetery dates dating all the way back to the French revolution when it was first used as a makeshift mass grave.
As Paris grew, so did the problems of housing the dead within in the city.
And eventually the needs of the living outweighed the needs of the dead,
As a result, and to the insult of many, a roadway was put in, right over the cemetery.
This place is also home to some of Paris’ most famous artists, including Edgar DeGas and Hector Berlioz.
But to me the most curious aspect of this place is the large collection of stray cats that live here among the dead.
I don’t know why they gather here, but we found someone feeding them like they were her own pets.
The story of this place can be researched but to see it for yourself and stroll through this idyllic and romantic setting really makes you FEEL Paris…
