I heard his last recital at Carnegie Hall and he must have been close 100. You could have heard a pin drop in the hall between movements as he played with hardly any peddle, all in the fingers. Unforgettable. It took my breath away. He married at 89 and died at 101. He was a pure musician and artist.
The last years of Horszowski's life were given to music making of an extraordinary level. There was no artifice or accented ego, just the simple direct manner of communicating the composer's intentions. In the end he had achieved the "second simplicity" so rarely witnessed by those, including myself, who were lucky to have attended those miraculous last concerts.
Goddamn this is by far the best I've ever heard. The drips of musical essence, I mean the phrasing, dynamics bring the singing melodies and their rhythms to life, and everything becomes clear in its sentiment and intellect. When we listen to great masters, though I'm inclined to my taste, such as Furtwangler or Pogorelich, one can clearly see that what counts for them is not mere perfection of conventional beat and such, but like Horszowski demonstrates and proves so finely here, a transparent picture of the musical score, the construction of musical language itself. My admiration to the maestro and my gratitude to the uploader.
"The great are rarely famous; the famous rarely great." He was well-known and absolutely REVERED among the musical cognoscenti. His life was beautifully fulfilled. He knew he was, and loved for it where it counted most.
@@TJFNYC212 Yes--and how! And yet I think his playing became stronger in his 90s than it had been earlier when her was very active in NYC.And he appeared less frail too as he seemed to have put on a few pounds. Obviously a strong constitution, tremendous good luck, but taking long walks and composing certainly has to have helped nature along
Luminous sound! Wonderful phrasing! Great depth of affection for and personal identification with the music! What mellow, venerable Old World playing! Has an integrity and charm all its own. I like hearing this music played with its edges slightly softened in this unique fashion.
Where have you been? The sound I've been looking for all my life. I agree, the best Bach playing I have ever heard. And I do love Bach, listened to a lot of recordings. But this one is so special, so magnificent I wouldn't dear make any kind of comparison. It trully moved me. I play this song as well and the fact that he could make it like that really touched me. I am overwhelmed.
Best perfomance i have ever heard, all the famous pianists plays ot more primitive way and not so natural in whole, his music filled with a cense with it's firs t scores. A real Bach is too high for usual known around the world musicians, they just show us little pale bits of his endless glory and wisdom. This one made it defenitely better. Sorry for words, it allsounds scary near this masterpiece.
Mi ignorancia no me permite expresarme mejor.
I heard the privilege of hearing play at least 4 times in NYC when he was already well into his 90s What a tone! What musicianship..... interesting to compare his interpretation to that of Martha Argerich who takes it as she does with everything at a break neck speed
Listen to Valentina Lisitsa or Glenn Gould and you'll see what is a fast version. I admit that sometimes Argerich plays too fast but it is not systematic. Her version of this partita seems to me played at a "normal" speed.

His life was beautifully fulfilled. He knew he was, and loved for it where it counted most.
there were always great concert pianists in attendance at his recitals in NYC

Increadible beatiful
Amazing forgotten polish pianist and composer!
Grzech zapomnienia (*)!
Not really "forgotten" but insufficiently celebrated until he was very old.
Transcendental musicianship. Wisdom beyond words, beyond years.
so lyrical, so beautiful!
Purement magnifique !
poetyczny Bach
Wspanialy
The best Bach playing I have ever heard. How the master would have loved to hear him. He is totally in Bach's head. Thank You
Doing the math - he was 91 years old here - amazing beyond words.
What great joy this playing gives.
I can only repeat what so many others have already said, "Best Bach playing I have ever heard."
Absolutely beautiful!
Such a great artist, and so underrated.

Smooth and singing! His playing is like mercury on a glass table.
music-making of the highest order

Respirez cette sublime interprétation.
This is a revelation !!!

even slower than Arrau's version

Martha's Bach Partita No. 2 in C minor is almost as good! No fast at all!
If a tempo sounds "plausible" and the performer can make a convincing case, then a very fast tempo or a very slow one can work.

good
... and kept performing for another 8 years.
I think he was almost 100 the last time I heard him in recital in NYC
18:20 When I hear things like this it sounds impossible to compose or play. Is it as difficult to play as it sounds?
It’s middling difficult to play. But impossible to play as beautifully as this performance. Breath taking!
"Izdırabın ilacı ızdırap ikisinin hasılı garbı sevinçtir." p.s.
oh
Is THE MESSANGER romantic like this interpretation? Uhm...
sbaglia tantissimo nel 3/4 , per me non è lui che suona..
