There is usually a little diagram included somewhere in the instruction sheet(s) of every pattern that will literally TELL & SHOW YOU exactly what each marking on the pattern represents..... and exactly WHERE to place it on your fabric (on the fold, seam line width, single pieces, darts, line up notches), etc... Which is precisely •WHY• it is always best to first thoroughly read over all of the instructions of any pattern in order to well familiarize yourself with both the basic instructions AND exactly what each of the markings on the pattern in the instruction diagrams represent... ●BEFORE● you even begin to do anything else with each pattern. And then also read over each section of your included pattern instructions yet again as you go thru each step so that you KNOW EXACTLY what all you should be doing during each instruction step as you begin measuring, cutting & sewing and then putting your project together as you go thru each step-by-step of the instructions to move on to the next step... until you finally complete the entire project. That way you'll always know best exactly if/when/where you may need to make any alterations to a particular pattern to adjust it for the best fit and outcome.. for YOU.🤷♂️

I was going to go with the Singer Heavy Duty when I started, but ended up deciding on the Brother ST150HDH Sewing Machine, Strong & Tough. I really love this machine.
I think I got my sewing machine for £10. The lady selling it said it had missing parts and maybe someone could fix it or use some parts. My grandad fixed it up and I made me first ever thing with help from someone. (That someone was a construction workers wife 😭 I lived on a site that was still building houses) I made a bag and was over the moon!
I started with a broken JCPenney machine mostly fixed it and struggled to the point I gave up. And then ended up with a Janome 6260. Less features than the older machine. But so smooth I’ve started picking up again. The difference a machine can make will definitely influence how you approach the hobby.
A lot of libraries also have sewing machines so you can see if its worth purchasing your own. I put in a serger request at my library and they got one! I can easily work around waiting for it since its free :)
Thank you for being realistic about the prices of sewing machines. I got one from walmart for ~$70 (very basic) but more seasoned seamstresses use brother which sits around $200-$300 ❤
Some of the most seasoned seamstresses are using industrial sewing machines that cost around $1000. $300 definitely isn't the point where you max out, but it's a good price for domestic sewing machines. Also, nothing special about Brother.
When i first learned how to sew, i had a plastic needle and a velvet-ish type of fabric, and i just kinda started to sew a pillow and used scraps of fabric to stuff it, so you don't need a sewing machine to learn how to sew.
All the grandmas with sewing machines who could use a little money. Put out a want ad for a sewing machine. I used to have five now I am down to 2 - a Janome and a White. The best and I have had them for close to 33 years.

$20 sounds like a stealll. Buying thrifted machines comes with its risks, but I think if you know what you're looking for and manage your expectations it can be well worth it :)
I’m 20 and petite standing at 4 foot 8. I’m tired of non of my clothes fitting me or the clothes that do fit me having to be from the kids section so I’m hoping to learn how to make my own clothes
Whatever machine you decide to get and use.. which is whatever machine is most comfortable and affordable to YOU to be using at any given time.. is not nearly as important as making sure that you always use the correct size & kind of •SEWING NEEDLE• in your sewing machine for fabrics such as that. (Fleece, knits, etc...) Just about any standard sewing machine is suitable for whatever kind of garments that you want to make.... but if you plan to primarily and mostly be sewing with heavier kinds of fabrics on a regular basis then you may need an INDUSTRIAL SEWING MACHINE instead of just a standard home sewing machine. But if you plan to be sewing with heavier fabrics only occasionally be sure to get a good sturdy older model sewing machine that has mostly METAL parts... instead of one of these modern ones with mostly only plastic parts that will always break much too easily sooner or later and then need expensive repairs and/or part replacements. Older model metal-part sewing machines are always going to be the BEST CHOICE for home sewing anyway, imo. Not only for the investment potential of typically increasing in value the older they get, as long as they are always kept in good working condition, but also because the older models just simply SEW & WORK much better than any of the more modern (mostly plastic) sewing machines do.... that usually need a whole lot more regular maintenance and repairs sooner or later, too. Especially the more "fancy-schmancy" digital and computerized ones that have a bunch of stitch settings on them that you will mostly NEVER ACTUALLY USE that will always need regular steady maintenance and repairs every time the least little thing goes wrong with only •ONE• part/section in that machine which will then mess up several OTHER parts from being able to then working properly, too. Unlike older metal-part sewing machines where the one non-working part on the machine is the •ONLY THING• that usually needs to be repaired, replaced or just simply unclogged to fix it back to proper working order again.🙄🤷♂️ However, MOST Vital- You must also make sure that you are always using the ●CORRECT NEEDLE● in your sewing machine no matter what kind of sewing machine that you have and are using... for whatever kind of fabric that you are currently using to sew with. A "Universal" needle is great for sewing almost everything.... but if you are ever going to be sewing Silk, Satin, Organza, Lace, Knits or any other kind of the more delicate fabrics.... then you need to adjust for that and change the needle in your sewing machine to better accommodate for those kinds of fabrics to a needle best suited for that (a smaller sized and much sharper needle) so that your more delicate/fragile fabrics don't end up always getting caught down in the FeedDogs of the machine by a too big/dull needle and then shredded to bits as you are trying to sew those kinds of much lighter and more delicate fabrics. The same concept applies for more heavy fabrics like Wool, Denim, Fleece, Canvas, Chambray, etc.... when you will then need to switch out and adjust your machine needle in the reverse manner to a bigger and more sturdy size needle to best sew for those heavier kinds of fabric.... so that you can not only sew thru them much quicker and easier but be able to do so •WITHOUT• constantly breaking your needle in your machine as you try to sew through heavier fabrics like that. FIRMLY SUGGEST: That if you like and enjoy best mostly sewing garments with using a wide variety of many different kinds of fabrics in many different styles and textures??..... then also make sure that you always keep a variety of several different kinds & sizes of •SEWING MACHINE NEEDLES• readily on hand in your sewing supplies in order to be able to switch out the needles in your sewing machine as you need them with each different kind of fabrics, too. Make certain that you always have plenty of "Universal" needles on hand to change out regularly as they dull after completing several different projects. For most of your typical sewing needs.... as long as you are using a Steel-Wool stuffed pin cushion that will always automatically sharpen your pins & needles as you insert & remove them... then there is no need to constantly keep changing and switching out your sewing machine needle ●EVERY TIME● that you complete a current project. Doing so is just completely WASTEFUL if the needle isn't even dull yet. 🙄 Also make sure to pick up a packet(s) of smaller sized/sharper sewing machine needles for more Delicate & Fragile fabrics..... while also making sure that you always have a packet(s) of the larger sized sturdy machine needles for much heavier fabrics like Wool/Denim/Canvas/etc.. in your sewing tools arsenal, too. Because making sure that you always switch out your machine needle to the correct kind/size of needle that is actually needed for the kind of fabric(s) that you are currently using??..... makes •ALLLLLL• the difference in the world as to how your sewing is going to finally turn out in the end result to look more "professional"... but also as how it will affect just how much you will then much better ●ENJOY● your sewing now that you won't have to constantly be dealing with so many frequent issues, stress and frustrations brought about by •NOT• using the correct size/kind of sewing machine needle for the type of fabrics that you are currently sewing.🤷♂️

My mother is actually a professional tailor, it’s a major plus because it means we automatically have hella stuff for sewing (she has an industrial sewing machine, a domestic one and also an overlock, plus a lot of tools and whatnot). That major plus is way outweighed by the fact that she specialises in south Asian clothing and has barely touched any other projects since she studied and learnt everything, meaning I can’t really learn what I want to very well and she’s always busy so she never has time to even take on her own stuff let alone teach me anything past the basics 😭😭😭
I say this as someone who's very poor and started out with nothing and no one to teach me... You're already way past an advantage compared to most people who want to sew with all your mother's stuff! Not to mention, you have youtube tutorials! You're good mate, the only thing stopping you from creating ANYTHING right now is yourself!!! Go for it! Make ur dreams come true! ❤
So the part of being afraid to ask for help, 3 years ago my friend’s child was dying literally hanging on by a thread and I am child free so I had some savings and I gave him all the money literally everything because I’ve known him for long and he claims he will pay back .. till now haven’t paid back a dime and he is even borderline rude and disrespectful,. I just found out I have an ovarian cyst the size of 16cm and guess what I can’t afford surgery . I am literally regretting my decision, I have been so patient with this man but now I’m over it.. that part of being generous is subjective . Mind you there’s no one to help I’m alone.

And since my Dad didn't know and he is minimalistic he threw it out the next day after getting it🥲. I didn't expect him to threw it out so soon, so I didn't yet tell him I wanna use it. Now I'm sewing manually and saving for a new one 😭😭

I’m completely self taught and I do great. The internet, library, and experience have helped me more than anything
Even if you don't have sewing machine, you can sew. Learn how to do running stitch and backstitch, you're good to go.
