    I have social anxiety disorder so whenever I leave the house I feel incredibly anxious, and sometimes that makes me cry. I now always have dark glasses with me so that I can do so undetected! I also, when I remember, do slow, deep breathing, which is great for keeping me calm.

    If yo buy a new toaster ( or whatever appliance) now, it will never last 25 years! Even the expensive ones. They are just not built to last anymore.

      Planned obsolescence. It is ridiculous and on purpose. There are more and more repair workshops around the country. We can still get parts for certain gadgets. It is important to clean and look after our appliances you are correct.

    Toaster and Hoover may be worth buying from a Supermarket. Asda usually have really good prices for these, but I'm sure Sainsbury's and Tesco do good deals too. Aldi and Lidl sometimes sell these in their middle aisles at reasonable prices.

    Hello Viv I bought a toaster oven. They come in all different sizes. Brilliant for toasting but also baking just like a normal oven. Saves money on the electric bill. They don't use as much as a big old stove. Some of them have hotplates on top. ☺️

    • @AtheistEve
      @AtheistEve 2 місяці тому +1

      On the plus side, nowadays we have loads more charity shops selling furniture, freecycle and gumtree for electricals and everything you can think of. So everyone can furnish their homes for less cost or even free to a large extent. Also, younger people are getting more into minimalism, which will reduce their desire to fill their space with lumber, whatnots and gimcracks.

    • @lynmcree9077
      @lynmcree9077 2 місяці тому

      @@AtheistEve That’s great. Unfortunately not the case here in NZ. Charity shops here are mostly clothes and crockery. A little expensive furniture and it’s very rare to appliances. Built in obsolescence means that by the time furniture and appliances are a few years old they are had it.
      Very different economy over here. I envy you your thriving second hand shops. Everything here is so expensive.

    • @AtheistEve
      @AtheistEve 2 місяці тому

      @@lynmcree9077 What about all the Op Shops? And, you have Freecycle in NZ. I suppose, you have to be in one of the major urban centres for much of this.
      I’ve always wanted to visit/emigrate to NZ. Maybe one day.

    • @lynmcree9077
      @lynmcree9077 2 місяці тому

      @@AtheistEve Charity/op shops are the same thing here. Run by the Sally’s, Hospice, St John.
      Freecycle is great but things go so fast. NZ is beautiful, we are very lucky to be here. Like everywhere in the world the cost of living is biting people hard here. There are ways of saving and recycling but the need out strips the supply.
      Where we are it’s a 2 1/2 hr drive to the nearest city and bizarrely there is no small appliance repair person between here and there. A 5 hr return trip to get your washing machine, drier or fridge fixed is just not doable. Actually you’d have to do it twice. Pick up and drop off. So a population of around 35000 use UA-cam to fix what they can themselves or just dump and buy a new one. It’s a horrible waste. The result is that a second hand appliance is an absolute unicorn. People get inventive with fixing stuff but most manufacturers won’t supply parts to ‘non approved repair technicians’. We replaced our toilet a few years ago and I put our old one up for free on marketplace. I had 42 people after it. 42! We live in the middle of nowhere. Stuff goes really fast.

    Hi Vivi!! I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience that day. I feel the same way when I go out most times here in California. I'm so happy that Mary and Rachel ran into you and were able to turn your day around; how lovely.
    I don't know if Black Friday is big in the UK but could you possibly wait for the deals for the three things that you need until then? You don't actually have to physically go into the stores you can buy online as well, which I prefer. Also, I have learned that Lenova computers are quite wonderful. I had several German engineer tenants that lived with me and they all used that brand. However, when I had built my own computer with my dad several years ago, it lasted me so much longer than anything and it was so much cheaper. As you mentioned, maybe you could look into that route to best suit your needs.
    Getting that cooler was a brilliant idea!!! Hugs from California! XX

    Dear Vivi, I totally understand your aversion to the canned music too often blasted over the speaker system in stores! That irritant combined with poor or flickery lighting is enough to drive me out the door without stopping to make a needed purchase. No wonder so many big box stores have closed and people are shopping on line! The only shopping I seem to do anymore is for groceries! I appreciate how overwhelming and stressful you found it. I also have found myself in tears from the stress. What a relief to chat with a couple of friendly faces after all of that. The prices of things is outrageous! groceries in some cases are doubled and even tripled in price for basics! £150..... for a toaster? outrageous! You are right about cleaning routines. Surface cleaning is done as needed, but chasing the house hippos out of the back closet? not so much... 😆 I need to do better too! Take care!

    The last person who aimed a trolley at me regretted it. I grabbed the front and said loudly ' excuse me!'. They looked non- plussed! I then explained to them that they were not the only person in the world and that there were less able folk in the world and that one day that would be them, when older. I could have gotten out of their way - I'm able, fortuneatly, but i had just seen them bash into an acquaintance of mine further down the aisle, who is not so able.
    This kind of inconsiderate behaviour is not the norm where i live ( I'm blessed) and so i feel quite confident in tackling it. Im not a 'Karen' but there is a line to be drawn and someone has to draw it.

Removed the plastic part and lifted the cover off. I used a piece of sandpaper to clean off the metal connector that the lever meets when depressed and then it worked properly. Hi Vivi. I like your idea of a deep cleaning rota for each room on top of the regular cleaning. Will try it. I hate shopping for big purchases in store. These days a lot of places like Currys only stock a very limited, and often higher priced, range in store. The cheaper items are available online only. I found a Hoover upright vacuum cleaner for £59.99 online and free delivery from Currys earlier this year and it is great so it would be worth doing some online research to see what is available.

    Bush Stick to Handheld Bagless Corded Vacuum Cleaner 265/9136 from Argos £32 pounds. I got this for our flat at least 4 years ago, it is mainly plastic with removable metal handle. You can use it like a traditional hoover or smaller handheld. I wanted a light weight space saving bag less option. The reviews for it were great so I gave it a go. I have not been disappointed, picks up well, easy to clean, a very sturdy reliable hoover. Maybe worth a look ? Re the toaster we use a George Forman as our toaster, works well. Any hoo, I am now thinking of all the appliances I haven’t cleaned 🤔. X

    I know what you mean about being overwhelmed by shopping. I rarely go apart from for food but I have to find things for the house. Just bought a new toaster and kettle from John Lewis - Kenwood make. Some were over £100! No chance. I spent £40 on each. I need blinds and they are so expensive. There is no blind up in the bathroom and I'm crouching down in case anyone looking in can make out I'm naked :). I had that toaster you have and the depressor thingy went on mine. It wasn't 25 years old though so well done on getting so much out of it.

    Everyone is in a hurry and focused on themselves and their life and cell phone. So, yes, you can potentially get run over by shopping carts or have someone comment you are taking to long to make your choice and feel you are in their way. And what's up with shoppers taking up the whole aisle as they shop? Those aisles are meant for two carts. Maybe we just aren't as polite and considerate as we used to be? I try to shop at the least busiest times so there will be less people. And I don't know if the UK has it but here in the USA, you have to watch out for store employee shoppers and their huge carts now also shopping for online orders, so that's in the mix too. It helps to periodically clean your appliances, you are right. I periodically take my vacumn apart and clean the filters, check for clogging, take string off the grabber bar, etc and it all helps to keep the motor going strong. I want my appliances to last as long as possible in good working order.

    What horrible shopping experience Vivi. You can definitely buy cheaper toasters and vacuums by the way. For example, there's a perfectly nice cream Breville toaster in Argos for £30 and that's not on sale and there are cheaper models. So I guess Currys is expensive. I mostly shop online now and have picked up last few small appliances from Lidl - the quality and price were great.
    I used to know about tech but not any more so I'm no use to you. I think it was wise of you to state your budget and functionality requirements e.g. hours of video storage, how long to.process it, can it cope with editing programmes etc. Also worth asking how long do they think it will last and can it be upgraded. No need to worry about "bluebops" then!

  • @AtheistEve

    When it comes to computers. I would get a mac. iMac for desktop. Maybe a Macbook Air for a laptop. But I prefer my iPad pro nowadays. You can edit videos in iMovie, which is free and easy. All base models are really fast (processing) and generally have enough memory (storage space). People who finally give up on windows machines and move to macs generally feel a huge sense of relief, freedom, ease of use. Windows bloatware and virusware you fight. Macs we enjoy.

    I hate shopping Vivi!!! I can't go to the big supermarkets or big towns and cities anymore. I shop at a local small Tesco with wide aisles, rather than the bigger Morrison's which is manic!! I also have a weekly grocery order from our small local village shop which he brings up to the door every Friday so only go to Tesco for things he doesn't keep in his shop. The last straw for me was when one Xmas I got hit so hard with a trolley I was pushed into the chiller, no apology or anything. Such angry people with trolley rage now. Why? I am deaf in my right ear and I get pushed out of the way so much, probably because I don't hear them say excuse me. A hearing aid is no use for my particular type of deafness. I keep away from it all!! Stuff them!!!

      I studied with the Open University some years ago and one of the courses looked at how supermarkets "manipulated" shoppers by laying out their stores in a particular way (fresh food first, basics (bread etc.) further back so you have to walk past all the "wants"), and it also looked at the use of piped music. A lot of research found that on quiet days the stores would play slower music and shoppers often slowed down their visits and browsed more (and hopefully bought more), but on busy days the music tended to be faster paced to encourage shoppers to get round the store more quickly. There was also research on product placement (the cheaper ranges tend to be lower down on the shelving), and it really opened my eyes to some of the subtle ways the stores try to influence us - obviously in the name of making it a pleasant shopping experience.😜

    I shop online for almost everything now days… computers, appliances, etc… I get exactly what I want at an acceptable price (often at a sale price) and then it’s either delivered to my door or I can quickly pick it up at the store. It gives me time to do research, check reviews, and run to the store to check quality if I want.

    I know the feeling, I have no knowledge of computers, other than working on them. Last winter my 8 year old MacBook pro broke down. I couldnt afford a new one, so I got a lap top computer, a Lenovo Yoga. According to my son, that covers all my needs, has a big nice screen for streaming videos also, and I can flip the screen over and use it as an ipad. It was too expensive for me too, until I found a store that had a display computer, same brand for sale. I saved over a £100! Very pleased with it. The only thing is that the touch pad is very sensitive. About a toaster, I had a smeg one, had for years. One day, it was during lock down. We had just gotten a new little kitten. I was working on my computer at the dining table, when I noticed the kitten on top of the fridge. It was like a slow motion film! On top of my fridge I displayed an old wooden bread baking tray, the cat had climbed into that, and ventured to the edge of it, then the tray tipped and the cat surfed off the fridge down to the kitchen benchtop where my beautiful Smeg toaster sat! They all sailed down to the floor, the kitten, the tray and the toaster, it was a disaster. The kitten ran away, completely unharmed, the tray got split in half, and the toaster, one could only toast one slice of bread at the time. I put it on the benchtop again plugged it in, and bang! It lit up and completely died. The same year I got a new Smeg toaster, same color from my two sons. The tray is repaired and out of reach of the cat! 🤣
