Just discovered your channel ... you have a very deep understanding of how music is made for the marketplace. As a one-time disco jock (1975-78) I kind of lost track of the charts that I once followed religiously in the 1970s. At age 65, I do like some of the energy around today's sounds, and it seems like the Internet is what is now making them truly worldwide, which was something we never thought about back in our day. When you dissected Rocket Man it really showed what a genius Elton John was and how it can appreciated on many levels. I'm sure you've done the same for The Who or Pink Floyd and I'll be checking those out. Peace !
Marco Lindner I am an above average bass player, which means that I am better than the sucker ones. Whenever I get to play with pros, I find that they’re so generous when you play with them. They instantly know that you’re not a pro and adjust to make you better. He is being generous and obviously love music and the music industry.
producers are not paid to rate whatever crap the singer brings in the studio, anyone with and interest will judge you regardless of the lyrics you’re putting into it
The way I see it, using fake instruments is trading the feel for sound. It won't be as human as a real instrument but at least you'll have the exact sound you want. If the sounds sucks you have nothing
Pop music is great!!! In fact its saved my mates life. He was paralysed in the hospital and when he heard Cardi B on the radio he got up to turn it off.
Great video - as a non-musician I never know WHY so many of these songs sound the same. But you just broke it down for me - similar chords and chord progression! Thank you!
Pretending stupid isn’t stupid is a betrayal every time. There’s such a thing as being nice and there’s such a thing as being phony. It’s unavoidable that this is absolutely idiotic and inexcusable. Pretending that this is music is weak.
These songs don’t do anything for me, but this analysis I can listen to all day. No cynicism, massive knowledge, clearly and concisely explained. Wonderful.
Momentinpassing. You are correct. The “rebellious” artists today are actually just complete hacks with zero talent that are the complete opposite of rebellious. They are used as pawns to push leftist talking points.

@Damien Trites don't try to change these closed people's mind. they're projecting their dislike of modern music as if it were fact. in the end it's really just their own problem if they can't enjoy the music at least the rest of us can, there is a great amount of music to be found for those who aren't stuck in the 80s.
My untrained ear just hears cookie-cutter music, which is why I love hearing your analysis and breakdowns of songs. I don't know if it will translate into a new appreciation for this music, but it certainly makes me pause and listen a little longer before passing judgment.
I love that Rick can still appreciate the songs he isn’t really into. Not only is he not snobby when he comments about a song’s simplicity, he clearly understands why fans of the song would love that sound. Classy guy

Love it, Rick! As a musician... (well, a drummer :P) for over 30 years, I like that you separate what you personally PREFER to listen to from what you APPRECIATE in the current charts. Its too easy to write current music off as 'crap', but our parents did the same thing about our music, and employing a clinical approach does help you to understand why people do like it en-masse - Even if we dont, ourselves. Love it!
I love the fact that Rick isn't a snob about music lol he's not your typical "boomer" just condescending newer pop music...he's able to see through the b.s. and point out the actual interesting parts of them, especially on a production level. Nice video Rick
the fact that you said he's able to see through the BS and has to do so to point out actual interesting parts of the music on a production level, pretty much makes the argument of why modern pop music indeed should be the victim of plenty of condescension.
I heard at least 7-8 popular 80s songs in that one. Footloose, Take on Me, I Want My MTV, are the most prominent. Pointer Sistets I heard elements of. Basically an AI take on what the 80s were.
I'm 66. When he was seventeen back in 2010, my youngest son, who finally came to realize that classic rock was actually better music than his generation's music, came home from school and asked me if I'd ever heard of the Eagles. Then he asked me to teach him to play Hotel California. I drew some chord diagrams, (changed the key to Am), gave him my banger acoustic, showed him how to read the chord diagrams, and thought, "This will last for about ten minutes." Eleven years later, he's an amazing guitar player, could easily trade licks with Buddy Guy, Bonamassa, Clapton, Jeff Beck, etc, had a pretty good blues band (filled with geezers like me) in the DFW area, and he plays so much better than I ever will, plus, he KNOWS the fretboard (I've only ever played by ear). I hate him.

The thing I noticed about all of these songs, except the one by The Weekend, was that none of them connected to me on any emotional level. They didn't make angry or sad, they didn't make me want to fight or make love, they didn't blow me away with original sounds or arrangements. @Jimmy Plumber What's the thing with me is, I can open up my DAW, add that song in my playlist, and because I have good ears, I can use the trial and error method to figure out the melody and chord progression, but I can't determine what they are just by listening to them how he did and many other people do too.. I don't even know what to practice so I could do that lol..
I’ve been playing guitar for 14 years and producing for around 9. I can only identify basic chords just by listening. Rick I have a suggestion of a serie of videos that would be called "what makes this a "rock" "country" "pop" music" what are the techniques or cliches that makes us instantly recognize a music as a certain genre. I'm from Brazil, so pardon me if there are too many English errors lol!
Excellent English bud, and a perfect idea. There’s a few bands I like that have these chord progressions that remind me so much of pop that I really have a hard time liking those particular songs. Good example, Thousand Foot Krutch, Step to Me. Reasonably talented band, decent music, and even most of that song is ok. But I cringe at the pre-corus and corus. It’s that distinct sound that you’re talking about.
Why does The Weekend song not have a killer guitar solo in it? Don't you agree it's a huge missed opportunity? If it were truly an 80s song, you can just hear the guitar solo in there making the song a masterpiece. A tight Journey-like sound for the tone.
what a weird opinion. Not every song has or should have a guitar solo, not every 80s song had a guitar solo, and not even every good 80s song had a "killer" guitar solo. Does Big in Japan has a guitar solo? Or Out of Touch? Or the Terminator 1984 theme? Or the Vangelis movie tracks? Especially since The Weeknd was obviously trying to emulate the 80s synth, not the 80s rock.

Peace !
This guy is just so likeable. He finds something positive about every song.
Marco Lindner I am an above average bass player, which means that I am better than the sucker ones. Whenever I get to play with pros, I find that they’re so generous when you play with them. Why does The Weekend song not have a killer guitar solo in it? Don't you agree it's a huge missed opportunity? If it were truly an 80s song, you can just hear the guitar solo in there making the song a masterpiece. A tight Journey-like sound for the tone.
The song still sounds amazing, it's no surprise it's the most streamed song on Spotify of all time
It does sound amazing but you can't deny it sounds like it's missing something.
what a weird opinion.
