11:22 Also, big operations like parity and mover would be nice if the progress was also shown in the footer section docked at the bottom of the screen, so you can still see the progress even when not on the main view.
As Unraid is primarily a NAS, one missing feature is a good file search engine baked into the OS, ideally with the ability to index metadata and content. Would also be good if this could be served to individual user accounts with share permissions in mind.
About the "Down Button" you are talking about, your keyboard has a button that will do this, the "End" key takes you to the bottom of the page, the "Home" key brings you back to the top. You can also use the "Page Up/Down" keys to go between sections if you don't want to have it go all the way one direction too. I'm just saying it's there. I can't think of a time when I have only a mouse and no keyboard. On a touch screen flick scrolling makes more sense than trying to hit a small target icon. Oh you might say, my keyboard is a 60% and doesn't have these buttons. Well, use your Fn key shortcut. I feel a better idea for the dynamix file browser is when you select multiple items, a dynamic menu pops up or just that when you click the last item the action on that item is performed on all selected items.
Unraid is amazing. I'm a new user and I'm already glued. Recommending to friends. I REALLY want multiple arrays. That was a big issue for my setup. My favorite idea is saving the home page in a config file. No point in having customization when it doesn't save om different devices. The graphics card passthrough feature would help me. *A drive removal tool would be an absolute game changer! General quality of life enhancements are always welcome especially since I am new! HOWEVER, for most unraid users, even novices like me, I think functional features should be considered equally if not more important. Thanks Spaceinvader!
I had never thought about someone needing a screenreader, but I now really hope there's a massive improvement in accessibility in Unraid. #doitformarkus
Pretty great video Ed, I like the simplistic approach to things a lot - anything that is dealt up easy and 1 or 2 clicks will always win the hearts of new users.
UI needs some seriously usability work generally in my opinion. It feels like they haven't done any user testing. Things like clicking on the icon of a container or VM for options, or the padlock icon to change what's shown just isn't intuitive. And the purpose or existence of push buttons often isn't clear.
Wow. You hit most of my wishes. I would like to add a read cache to the Unraid array. It would be great to also flag files to always keep in the cache. It would also be awesome to have a Docker migration tool. This would export the configuration and possibly data of a Docker and make it importable on another server. This would be a bit like your VM wish. Thank you for all you do!
I like the idea of collapsible device list in pools. I think instead of a down arrow on the main tab though they should just move the array operations up to the top. Maybe to the right of the Array Devices heading.
One feature I would love to see is an option to stop Docker/VMs when I want to change a setting that requires them to be off, namely any network settings. If there was a prompt to stop Docker on that page that would be great. That way I don't have to leave to go to the Settings> Docker/VM section and then back to Network. Also, if there was an option to stop the Docker/VM services from their respective tabs instead of Settings, that would also be appreciated. Because whenever I need to stop them, of course I click there first instead of remembering to go to Settings...
Lots of great ideas. I’d especially appreciate better mobile layout, config file, down arrow, remove drives, user groups, docker search button, additional docker networks & export/import VM templates. Integration of zfs and Tailscale were excellent improvements in addition to what you mentioned. Cheers! 😊
I like that we boot using a flash drive; my servers tend to have data drives connected to every drive point. However, the ability to boot from the cache SSD would be a nice option.
What about having Tools and Settings under the same tab? And your Batocera set up to your arcade. How did you get this operating? I'd like to do this with my arcade machine too.
My vision is 20/200 thanks to ocular albinism, but I can see (it's just 10 times smaller). I hate JAWS, as I'm a developer and we have to make our stuff screen reader compliant. It's very irritating to hear the robot voice incessantly natter at you every time you hover over anything lol. Hats off to users who can use it without going mad. I usually test with NVDA because they won't give me a license for JAWS, and NVDA has a speech viewer so you can mute the robot voice and see a window spitting out text of whatever it says.
I'd also love to have the ability to shrink an existing array easily, and to have iSCSI Target creation capability built into unraid somewhere, either when adding a pool, or creating a share.
YES! to: Combined VM info on the Dashboard, Mover progress info, Removing drives from an array, Users in Groups, Custom Docker network creation in GUI, Not mentioned: Grouping Docker containers without a plug-in hack.
My wish list for a SPACEINVADER tutorial will be a batocera VM tutorial! I see the tab at the top in all your videos but always wondered why there is no content about it on your channel 😭
I wish the plugin updates were checked before you reach the the plugins page, because it takes a very long time for them to be checked and I can't use the page until it is completed.
i would like, when creating a share , to be able to type in a file path for the primary storage field and i agree with having a easy option to remove drives from the array.
Install on SSD, instead of replacing flash drives every few years. Updates that don't brick your network settings. Easy drive replacement, select a drive to replace including parity and a new drive to replace it and let unraid handle the process. A sleep or shutdown function that can monitor the array activity not just all your drives that are outside the array, that are actually part of the array.😊
There seems to be quite a lot problems so yeah waiting for dot release makes sense for sensitive operations. But for many people it also works just fine.
I've got a backup server and a main server. I've updated my backup server with no issues, everything went smoothly. but coming from an enterprise IT background, I usually try and do a N-1 approach to allow time for bugs to be ironed out. Only time that can be different is if there are critical security vulnerabilities I'm exposed to.
I might be wrong, but I think that Mover currently don't verify that files were moved without errors. I think an option to toggle some kind of verification, e.g. checksum, would be nice. What do you think?
How about when you have large lists a twirly would be good,I agree. But why not have those commands at the bottom of the page permanently on the bottom of the display?
Not being able to add a persistent route in the network configuration is frustrating, and even worse the UI does not mention they are not persistent.... they just not there after a reboot. Having to run user scripts to add back in is a poor solution.
I am going to be new to Unraid. I have been running a legacy Windows server with a hardware raid (about 13 years old) and just bought a decent chassis from ebay and will be throwing in 8 18 TB disks to start. I really wanted to start with zfs but not being able to expand with just 1 disk really scared me off. Now I am thinking of just a standard array with 2 parity disks and either xfs or btrfs, still need to figure out which one. If expansion for zfs comes, would I be able to upgrade to it or would I lose everything? This is so much different from hardware raid :)
I alwayss wanted to be able to throttle parity checks. My server is almost always in use, so i would prrobably do more frequent parity checks if thatwas available
Why not put the buttons for start stop reboot ect in a bottom frame so you can show hide at the bottom of the screen and that would work for the file utility to the bottom bar could be shown and hid but have the buttons to copy / edit/ paste ect
10:13 Actions that can apply on selections within a view should be docked at the top or bottom (within screen space) of that view so that you always have those buttons available to you. Having to scroll at all to the top or bottom to do those actions is just bad design. 👍
1) automated data mover for upgrade and transition FS/disks/etc 2) Authentication support for third party IDPs using standard auth mechanisms. Passwords will no longer exist in the next few years and only relevent in DR scenerios. No need for unraid to do this natively... but it does need to be able to authenticate users and devices accessing services and shares nativly. 3) escrow and auto mount encryption keys held in TPMs. It's optional, but would be nice to be able to trigger a reboot for an os upgrade and have the option to have it come back up patched and auto starting array. 4) Docker img corruption happens from time to time. Would be nice to have a robust way to address and deal with this. 5) stable connect 6) working tailscale
My wish list items are all ZFS related: - VDev disk expansion (as you said) - A better UI for VDev management. It should be much more intuitive and transparent to add another VDev to an existing pool - Being able to change Arc cache size from the UI (as you said). It is really easy to add the .conf file for it, but that should really just be in the UI.
In general, I miss the same features as you. Instead of the feature ua-cam.com/video/j5V9Lf1fqIw/v-deo.htmlsi=g6NGEqjjNApeLH10&t=1172 I would rather have a more general feature that you can connect multiple Unraid servers (cluster) including routing of all Docker containers. I would also like to see better caching. For example, that frequently used media files (individual songs from an album) are automatically stored in the cache pool. Since other boot media are rejected by Lime Technology, Inc, I would like to have mirrored usb drives that are automatically loaded if needed
RAID-Z expansion is a major feature I think Unraid should focus on. I also think they should work on adding high availability features to containers and VMs. I have 3 Unraid servers running, and I would like the most essential containers and VMs be able to "migrate" from one machine to another based on which machine is currently up. This way I could, for example, keep my HA VM up and running while I upgrade the server it usually runs on.
I think they should really not work on raid-z. It defeats the point of unraid. They should focus on making there unraid array better. By have multiples; by having real cache disks that move data into faster SSDs depending on how often it is accessed. Maybe just possibly getting SSD support for unraid array. That would solve most of the drawbacks. ZFS and Raid Z are not practical nor for every major use case when building an organic NAS that you grow up into. ZFS requires you to basically just through money at your drives.
Can we please just F'ing install the os on and SSD instead of flash drives? It's so jank, and a huge problem the unraid team seems determined not to solve. Also, the fact that you can only pay for the os after installation is insane. Basic things, really.
11:22 Also, big operations like parity and mover would be nice if the progress was also shown in the footer section docked at the bottom of the screen, so you can still see the progress even when not on the main view.
Remove a drive would be epic.
Happy new year mate! Thank you for all your work with unraid, your tutorials are invaluable!!

Thanks for you kind comment :)
Removing disk from array would be nice :)
Collapsed array/pool sections would also be nice if it remembers the state and that the collapsed state has some sort of compact summary.
May the Force be with Marcus. Thank you for sharing his awesome tenacity of spirit, Ed.
Pretty great video Ed, I like the simplistic approach to things a lot - anything that is dealt up easy and 1 or 2 clicks will always win the hearts of new users.
So excited to hear from you Spaceinvader! Thank you for all your content on Unraid!
Starting a VM without starting the array would be nice
UI needs some seriously usability work generally in my opinion. It feels like they haven't done any user testing. What I would like to see is to be able to backup appdata encrypted onto Unraid Connect (excluding Plex posters metadata etc, so just max 1GB)

Mover tuning plugin should be baked in unraid

Would love to see an interactive troubleshooting page
I would use like the mover button status, the disk removal button and the users group would be great.
Same here, but also if possible to have a pause/resume and cancel would be awesome
Totally agree about boot drive changes .. the security of a system is its weakest point and the most vulnerable is the usb key
Yeah I recently added ZFS pools. Would be great if the scrub and parity check settings were in the same place.
Happy new year Spaceinvader! Always love your videos. What are some of the tabs on your gui?
I wish the plugin updates were checked before you reach the the plugins page, because it takes a very long time for them to be checked and I can't use the page until it is completed.
How did you get the power consumption of the nvme and SATA devices in the main overview? That's super cool!
i would like, when creating a share , to be able to type in a file path for the primary storage field

Unraid 7.0 is out now. Would you recommend waiting to update, considering it’s newly available to everyone and potential bugs might still surface?
There seems to be quite a lot problems so yeah waiting for dot release makes sense for sensitive operations. But for many people it also works just fine.

Moble compatibility would be huge, however that is a lot of work.
Ability to shrink an array and a button to migrate to a new cache drive.
Encrypt the array Feature would be amazing
How about when you have large lists a twirly would be good,I agree. But why not have those commands at the bottom of the page permanently on the bottom of the display?
I would like there to be a simple option in Unraid to assign the percentage of ram memory to the zfs pools. Regards
Not being able to add a persistent route in the network configuration is frustrating, and even worse the UI does not mention they are not persistent.... they just not there after a reboot. Having to run user scripts to add back in is a poor solution.
Wish we could have multiple unraid arrays. Like 24 drives then a 2nd unraid array of 24 drives
Throttle would be great. My drives get hot during parity.
I am going to be new to Unraid. I agree with all of them. Thx
I would love to see ceph support. Remote and local disk/OSD
On unraid7 (stable) i don't have tile management (min. 06:03)... ?
I would really like more performance stats. like drive access % and process/docker/VM CPU and RAM usage.
Would be nice also have the unraid not linked to the usb boot drive but linked to the account
Why not put the buttons for start stop reboot ect in a bottom frame so you can show hide at the bottom of the screen and that would work for the file utility to the bottom bar could be shown and hid but have the buttons to copy / edit/ paste ect

As always, inspirational.
It's more than a little late 😁
1) automated data mover for upgrade and transition FS/disks/etc

I would love support for Thunderbolt and a better PCIE passthrough

why go use trueNAS. ZFS as poisoned the entire point of Unraid.
Native iSCSI support so I can use Unraid as a SAN for VMs.
That's been possible for years via plugin, kernel support has been there for quite a while now
My one wish would be to have UASP support in the kernel.
Zfs expansion, reflink on copy(block clone) , wifi support.
I hope the support for zfs - spare drives comes back. This is killed by the last linux kernel :/
What about an App for mobiles
The godfather returns.
Love you
Thanks @darthkielbasa. And thanks for watching :)
SSO.
Ability to create more gui logins. Not just 1x root account.
Have VM not need to be shut down when aray is shut down

+1 to removing drives!
Rumors about home assistant problems on the new 7.0 version, any thoughts? Great video, tnx.
