- The Sun had a busy week. The most powerful solar storm in the last two decades recently hit Earth, creating stunning displays of auroras, often known as the Northern and Southern Lights. This event was caused by a group of sunspots (AR 3664), about 16 times the size of Earth. They released several X-class solar flares and coronal mass ejections directly toward our planet. These solar emissions led to severe geomagnetic storms, ranked at the highest intensity level of G5, marking the most intense storms since the 2003 Halloween storms.
So, what really happened on the surface of the Sun that caused the geomagnetic storm? How did it create such a stunning display of light 150 million km away? Finally, and most importantly, what will happen when the sunspot group faces our planet again after two weeks?

I'm 70+ years old and I have seen a lot of SHTF situations in that time. From the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis to the OPED Oil Embargo of the late 70’s. Don’t forget the more recent Y2K scare and The Mayan calendar scare on 12-21-12. In between all of that, right up to today, was floods, droughts, wild fires, wars, terrorist attacks and much more. Most recently was the Tamarack Fire of back in 2021. I had to evac for two days. Where there once was Pinon pine forests and open expanses of sage and chaparral, now look more like a scene from Mad Max. All of this was suppose to be the end of the life as we know it. I have survived all of that and I plan to survive a bit longer.
I might be getting older, but I refuse to grow up.

I live in Scotland and we see the Northern lights a lot but yesterday I was in my elderly Mums house and she asked me to turn off one of her lamps ,So I went over and switched it off and it stayed on flickering and i thot it was the switch so I unplugged it and I swear it was still on but not as bright and flickering, I just left it unplugged,Crazy stuff Nature.❤
The light bulbs we are required to use in California stay illuminated a bit,after being turned off. I have a high grade flashlight that stays slightly illuminated after turning off,for a bit……maybe something like this?

@@ThatScottishguy1The whole atmosphere is somewhat excited when auroras are happening, if it’s particularly strong it certainly could cause enough ambient energy to make a bulb flicker, they don’t require much energy to start lighting up. Very cool experience, nature really does some wild things

@@markkens9 True. But the six CMEs we had arrive at earth were associated with X1 (thereabouts) flares, not super dense, not super fast, but they made aurora just about worldwide. That should not be expected, and it’s historic.
So, what changed? It’s the strength of the field… or lessening thereof.
8:10 FYI Quebec's electrical grid is much more important to the American North East today than it was in the late 80s, the province is expanding its hydroelectricity export to New England across various new power line projects. The same outage today would have vastly more important consequences.
@ParadoxalDream. Grids which travel from North to South are much more likely to suffer damage from an incoming CME. Looks like that direction is already satisfied from Quebec to the American North East.

In 1989 I was living in a Montreal suburb when that solar flare hit us without being informed it was coming! My young kids were playing in the back yard that afternoon...
As I went outside to bring them snacks, my jaw dropped when I saw my little boys running to me with pinkish faces!..😳!? When they saw me coming, they ran to me excited & laughing as they shouted... ""Mom..look! Look at us!"" as they propted out their hands & stretched out their necks to show me their faces!
All I could hear in my mind was "Don't panic..Stay calm!" So the only thing I could say was ""Wow! Don't you look cute in pink!"" as my heart was thumping in my chest! That's when I realized that a light pink hue had overtaken the yard!
I don't really know how the pink sky didn't get my first attention? Worried for the children, I suppose...
Then I heard people talking loudly up in front of the house... With no tall trees to block the view, we all saw the whole sky had turned a bright pink that left it's coloured hue on our faces & discoloured everything thing else!
Many people started to show real concern! Some believed it could be toxic.. Some called to God's protection... Those who were just coming out of their homes waving at the crowd shouting... "The news is saying that Sun flares are creating Auroras!" Then I naively said.. ""Don't Auroras usually come in coloured waves??""..🤔?
In Canada we're used to wavy, beautifully coloured Auroras except that they usually appeared at night! A bit relieved, I turned to go back in the house to listen for more news on the radio...Seems some damage was done in more Northern areas that were easily being repaired!
We were advised to shut our electric breakers till the skies cleared out or when the news stated that Hydro Quebec said everything was back to normal!
For one thing, being a mom, my first concern is always for the kid's
wellbeing..so, at that time I didn't really understand why I was hearing many of my street neighbors spending the rest of that day on their decks!.. Well..now that I think about it..of course, with electric breakers shut down, they took advantage of their outside grills!

Been paying attention to the sky in the past weeks & no Auroras to see in my neck of the woods! Yeah! I now live in a rural area in the Laurentian Mountains & most nights are covered with a mist.. I'm thinking that this could be the reason! I've been seeing videos of Countries getting an eye full of beautifully coloured waves!! However, since I learned about Earth's Magnetic Field thinning out while the Sun's flares possible danger on us, I no longer get excited when Auroras appear!
Well I don't worry so much anymore since I've become a bit of a Preppy since 1989..😊! I have an outdoor grill of course but what's really cool is that my now adult sons built me an outside Stoned Oven they saw on YT. ...
They both live in B.C. I don't get to see them as often as I'd like but when they do visit with their families it's for 10 to 15 days & they always make sure that I can easily take care of myself!..

Sorry, you are incorrect. The auroras were seen all the way south to Cuba and here in Honolulu, Hawaii which has not happened since the Carrington even from the 1800s
And I remember seeing videos on lazers being shot into the sun creating these holes in the sun, And dont forget about that sun simulator they made.

We are in southern England. Never seen the Northern lights where I live before. These were spectacular. Blue in one direction and red/green in the other.

This last solar storm only produced small x flares. The 2003 Halloween storms produced x45. Even then we did t see aurora to the equator. The last time that happened was 103 yrs ago with an x50. This time we saw aurora at the pokes from minor x flares. Can you see we’re up the creek where the failing magnetosphere is concerned?

The weather that is also spawned from the magnetic coupling with the earth from the suns em energy; it's a fairly elaborate scam if that were to be true. The best way to find out the truth is to rule out that which is impossible. A scam of this magnitude, although not impossible, would be improbable, and therefore should only be considered if perhaps people all over the world had not had the best auroral show in decades...it's easy to say "unless they are fake", but super easy to know why those x flares are not fake. @@nannettecavasin4804 HAARP is only visible within a few hundred miles of the testing facility. There were 3 times last year the aurora was visible in the southern US, didn't coincide with HAARP testing. There was a huge one visible as far south as Honduras in 1989, before HAARP was built.

New Zealand has seen about 5 lots f southern lights , in the far north of the country . Each display , was magent in color , and quite sold across the sky . Beautiful to behold , though getting caught in a flare or cme , with nerve damage often gettin charged up , to past pain killer releif .

We had a once in a lifetime Aurora light show in the city of Melbourne,and Victoria Australia. It was insane. Never seen before that far North in Australia and not even winter. We had a beautiful light show in the lowest state in Oz, Tasmania as well, which is above Antarctica. Magic happening in the sky all over the world lately, so stunning. ❤❤❤

I hope utility companies have enough time to shut down the electric grid to protect it. I would rather lose it temporarily than permanently.
An electrical engineer told me that power companies, to save money, have been installing equipment without overload protection. For example, a transformer with the trip installed costs about $200 more. In a big CME the transformer would overload, trip, and it can be reset and be back in service. Without it, it simply fries.

It has decimated short wave and ham radio, but some strange activity on the higher bands with Aurora, coming to the peak of the 11-year sunspot cycle then it's all downhill after that
You forgot to mention that this wasn't even really an impressive storm, and that it wouldn't have reached as far South as it did IF the magnetic field wasn't weakening.
Also, the color pink indicates deeper penetration as lower layers of the atmosphere were excited.

No, the length of wire has to be way more considerable to collect enough charged particles to induce a magnetic current.
It's really only large scale things like power lines that it can happen to, not consumer electronics.

The X flares here were barely into the X range. We’ve seen stronger geomagnetic storms. Normally to get low latitude aurora we’d see X 50 or higher. Something strange is happening with the earth’s magnetic fields.
So where is the heat? Bring it on please cos its freezing here and we never barely had a summer for 3 years.
