"on the brink of dancing" is such a powerful phrase (or verse or whatever it is), it's so expressive

I think the spreadsheet idea is great, however, I think notion will be a better tool for this. It would allow you to have the spreadsheet format, but also open each song up to host more information like lyrics, tabs, sheet music, etc. Love it.

The Köchel number system is really helpful. I use the Dropvox now called Recup app and as soon as I hit record it makes an mp3, puts the date and time that it was created and then uploads into a folder that I route to in my dropbox. The only additional step I've taken is labeling with either a song lyric or instrumental idea and then putting in the year. I take the time to re-record song ideas a lot in and have draft mp3s where they are labeled instrumental or song draft 001, 002 and so forth. Most of the time for instrumentals, I create a song title from images that come to mind when I listen back to them.

I also do this for the ideas that come to me away from my home studio, as well as keeping a reaper project to record the interesting riff/chord ideas I get when I'm practising or noodling around.

David, thanks for sharing! It's very inspiring. When I record my song ideas, I add a one digit number to the file name (1 through 5). Numbers pont to my own satisfaction with the piece at the moment of recording it. For example, I'd put 5 into file name if I really felt good about the idea or performance, it just feels right. Then I search for files with 5s and I get a list of my Top pieces, gets me into creative mode and ideas turn into more complete state :) 4s and 3s are for review, and 1s, 2s, well if any, I'd just ignore or delete them eventually. Hope you guys find it useful.

Another great one. Stay safe David! I would also be curious to see your approach to backing up your files and directories.

Thank you very much for the naming tip - I have been trying to add a genre, mood, or tempo to the codename of the song, but if numbers worked for remembering Pokemon, it could be a better solution! :D
I have one tip I came up with this month.
The preview audio files and renders of the song idea are great, but there’s still the part where you have to either look for a folder name with the DAW files in another directory or add the link to a spreadsheet, and to do it, all the files should be online, and so on.
I have been thinking about making something like a clickable link in the finder, and one idea seems to work pretty well!
Name your audio preview like you used to, but leave it in your DAW project folder with all the collected files. Then make a unique tag for the previews - for me, it’s “music ideas.”
Then type the tag in your Finder search bar, right click and save the search/drag and drop it to your sidebar with folder shortcuts.
Now you can get to your ideas smart folder linked with a specific tag in one click, and also, right-click on the particular song and use “open file’ location” to go to the project file.
It’s also a nondestructive method, and if you made progress with one of the songs, you can untag the old preview file and give a “music idea” tag to the new audio file.

thank you David, I love your channel very much! Jut klicking around on your channel the last couple of days and I reaaly can't stop!
I never learned a lot of music theory, so I was wondering if you have any good tips for: how to know the tempo of idea you have in mind? The same for the key, how can i figure that out? How could I learn to figure that out?
    I'd apreciate your answer!

Great tips! I do most of those already. Have you tried Evernote? My writing heavily depends on coming up with things to talk about. So my go to software has been Evernote, which is text friendly. It can do most of the things you talked about. Dating, sorting (songparts), tagging (key/tempo although I find adjusting key and tempo pretty easy so I just do it later when I sit down and work on them). Plus it combines multiple means of media. Sometimes I need a photo to capture how I came up with the idea. It’s been very useful. And of course, it’s cloud based so I can just pull it up on my laptop.
