Great video! One item of note: the camera *does* have focus lock. When you hold the shutter partially down to focus, it won't refocus again until the next time you lift your finger and place it back on the shutter button again. Using this functionality you can focus, recompose, and then take the photo. Since this wasn't the case in your video, maybe you either got a faulty model or weren't holding down on the shutter button with enough pressure? For anyone with access to the original manual, this is covered on pg. 18 ("Focus Hold")
This was my first camera that I ever owned. I had so much fun with it. Had the macro zoom lens. This thing is the godfather of the modern slr. Auto-focus, a great light meter, auto film loader and rewind. Amazing first camera, really. Damn, think I'm gonna have to buy another one. Good thing that they're only, like, $10. Ha.
I used this camera for a while. It has very good flash ttl metering as well. This was the first slr with integrated autofokus and film advance, which became the standard camera configuration for slrs for all brands, both for the professional and amateur market.
Today I found an old Minolta 7000 in the basement of my dad and i can't wait to use it for some nice photos of skateboarding. Youre images have such a nice vibe!! Keep up the good work!
Thank you for this helpful video. I've just picked up my Grandad's Minolta 7000 and, as a result of your video, now understand the ISO/film relationship and have worked out the centre focus/recompose. I'm looking forward to getting started on my film camera journey.
I remember that day in Feb, 1985 very well. Every photo mag, Popular Photography, Modern Photography etc...had this rig on their covers months later. While I was a Canon shooter at the time, I played around with one for a week, not that impressed, I could focus faster and far more accurately. That said, it was the first and any new tech will almost always have issues. It was impressive that Minolta was able to beat their much larger rivals, Nikon and Canon to introduce a functional 35mm system to the world.
I was a big Minolta fan having owned an srt100, 101, 102, XE5 and XE7. In college I supplemented my income with wedding photography and later picked up a Maxxum 7000 as I was tired of using a 35 wide angle lens and zone focusing for shots of the bride coming up the aisle. I had to get in too close to get good composition and often could not get off a second safety shot. In wedding photography, certain shots are sacred and a second shot in case of a blink or turned head or whatever is needed. I would tell the bride to pause at a certain pew for shot one and again further up the aisle for shot 2, which they never did. I figured the Maxxum was a slam dunk for this w. autofocus and also a benefit for low light reception shots at then end of a long day. I could use the 50mm and frame tight enough and still get multiple shots off. First time I tried it, the damn camera just locked up and wouldn't focus with the bride giving me the WTF as she went past. The camera could not track focus on a subject coming straight at the camera! I literally threw it across the room I was so mad. I had to restage the entrance afterwards and crop tight so as to not show the empty pews beyond the "stand-ins" I had lining the aisle. I swore off autofocus until it was "perfected".
I just got this camera. I am trying to learn how to use it . I have never had anything more than a point and shoot camera. Thank you for the information.
I have 9000 , it’s pro version of it with 1/4000sec shutter and motored auto winder which also gives 5-5.5fps shooting (12 aa batteries..). To lock AF just press halfway down and hold button in this position, then move camera to compose your photo! It works! My autofocus on 9000 is very fast during daylight. Of course during night it can’t work well
I have two of these 7000 cameras. My a7 recently died and I'm using them in its place. Quite happy with them though they don't obviously have all the features my a7 had.
You mentioned the Minolta Maxxum 7000 doesn't have an Auto Exposure Lock. The button on the back right side below the on/off botton is the AEL. Hope this helps. I collect Nikon, Minolta, Canon cameras.
Thanks for the really informative video on the Maxx 7000! I just brought one at a Church thrift store today for 5 bucks with a Tokina 35-200 Len...was 10 bucks more!! Looked up the camera on UA-cam and found your video to get familiar with it!! Great job in getting me a little knowledgeable on it!!! Thx have. Good day!!! 😎
Nice, im waiting on my 7000 to arrive, found a Minolta 35-80mm zoom for 2 bucks at a thrift store, bought it and went online and found a good condition 7000 body for 25 bucks (new Zealand dollars so about 13usd)
there are so many underrated ones! what an insightful video! i just love film photography! really enjoyed watching this! thanks for sharing this amazing content with us
your AA battery grip was actually optional as they came originally with a AAA grip (both of which are better than using a difficult to find lithium cell). and the focus DOES lock, when you select Single frame in drive mode (a line appears over the S on the LCD). you must be set to Continuous advance (a line over the C on the lower right of LCD) and the focus will continually hunt as it is ready for you to fire off shots as long as the shutter button is held down (something I almost never do with film anyway). nice review of a surprisingly capable and easy to use camera that can be had for almost nothing now
Just found one. Even with batteries it wasn't working. I borrowed the Battery holder from the AF 5000 (AAA not double A) and it works. Came with a 50mm F2 Macro. That lens gets really close
I received this camera from an old classmate. Very good condition. I looked in the manual and it says that it does have focus lock. It clearly states to focus on the subject and then recompose. You just have to hold the shutter release at the halfway point. I have yet to try this as I have another camera with film that I want to use up before loading the Maxxum 7000 to test.
I have this same camera, I will post my video next week. When I would have press and move the camera lens would lose focus. Maybe manual you read was of 7000i
My brother had the 7000 when it first came out, I seem to remember it wasn’t his favourite camera but I can’t remember why. Because he’s a tight a*** it was probably having to buy batteries. A great video as always. The water splashing over the young lady was my favourite shot, you caught it at exactly the right moment.
I have this camera! I’m just getting into film. So many of my shots have been underexposed :( do you shoot on manual? If so do you use a light meter? It’s highly likely I just need more practice ! But the lighting in your photos is beautiful!
Thanks for the video. Strange, your 7000 suddenly refused to power up (6.35) but you managed to get it going again. Mine did the same thing but sadly never powered up again. Changed and tested the batteries and also changed the internal 2016 lithium behind the silver panel but it's completely dead. Just ordered another 7000 body, excellent condition for $28.
just got one of these for 41.99 cad. is that a good deal? i tested it and it works great, just haven't used any film with it as it is my first film camera and i don't have any film yet lol
didn't realize it came with a AA battery grip, mine came with only a AAA, it's a good camera. I over-ride the centre auto-focusing by setting my centre focus then switching to manual so the camera doesn't adjust
hello! can anyone help me? i want to know if this camera only shoots if it has a film? because i recently bought and i click on the botton and nothing happens (i dont have film yet) (afraid that isn't work) thank youu
Thanks for another great video. Your comments about the camera resonate with what I imagine I would feel about the same. I only wish that the black-and-white photos could have been included in the video.
Thirty Five Studio I creeped the comments and found the comment where you listed the lens you used! Thanks for replying though it means a lot. I was also wondering, do you develop and print your rolls of film? Or do you send them in to a lab?
Hey could you expand on what you mean by "couldn't maximize your entire roll"? If you're using 36 exposure film and then take 36 photos, what's being lost? Do you mean that you can't take double exposures?
Bowl with older mechanical cameras, you can usually get up to 38-40 shots per roll of film. The electronic motor of the maxxum automatically rewinds after the 36th shot. It doesn’t make use of the extra frames in the roll.
@@mcmoofin4928 yea either I didn’t stay still enough or they messed up developing the film I only got like 3 or 4 good pics out of the 24 the rest were overexposed or blurry
This is a film camera not digital. First you send the finished roll of film to a photo lab they develop and scan film. When they finish processing your film they will send you your images via CD and developed film, or they will notify you your images are available for download from their site (they will also mail you your negatives). Second, after receiving the CD you load them onto your computer, if you download the scanned images they are on that computer.

So you stole it.... hahah
It's mine, I dropped it.
What a coincidence, I just bought that camera today.
You made a great choice!
Same lol
It does have focus lock! Of course, I might add. Minolta where not idiots. Read the manual. Just hold the button half pressed after focus.
I just found this camera today at my old grandparents house. i cant wait to explore this bad boy!

My 7000 does lock focus when i keep my finger on the trigger. But the naked finger must touch both little metal contacts.
Great review! Minolta Gang!
can you do a video on how to use the camera? I just got one and have no clue how to use it :,)

Great Content! Made me go digging and find my dad's old minolta 5000 and 7000 Maxxums..
I just got this camera. I am trying to learn how to use it . I have never had anything more than a point and shoot camera. Thank you for the information.
Old video, but what you have to do is change the focus out of continuous focus to single focus. Then, half press, and focus is locked. Great video!
MINOLTA FILM CAMERAS HAD BEEN UNDERRATED!
I love to use minolta film cameras, minolta x 700 is excellent one.
Maxxum 9 is superb.

Mark Harris maybe due to the automatic film winding too
I just found one of these on Craigslist with 2 sigma lenses for $40, I was using adapters on my micro 4:3. But this looks like a decent camera too.
The transition😮😮

It should work even without film. Make sure the camera turned on. The switch is the silver slider on top.
I have this camera and when the drive is set to single frame the autofocus can be hold and recompose is possible but in continuous drive it's not.
The result is so Sharp.
If you keep the shutter half way pressed it will maintain the focus on the first object you picked
hey nice video and a great camera. once i lock focus (green light) I can easily recompose. just need to keep the button depressed a bit.
Amazing vid! Keep the uploads coming!
Will do! Thank you!
Are the pics your showing in the video photoshopped a little bit or is that how the pics look straight from the camera?

Hi can you please give me ideas where can I buy a film camera in the Philippines? Thanks!
HI what camera/s did you use to actually film this video? thanks :)
Lauren Jackson hi! We used a Canon EOS M camera. Link is in the description for more info on the cam. 😀
Does anyone know where to get the batteries for these cameras
I have this camera but the grips are deteriorated. Is there a market for re manufacturing pieces like that for old cameras?
Make your own or clean with Alcohol if just white Deteriotion
Do you mind sharing what lens you’re using on your Minolta? 🙂
