  • A complete remake of a cue from Brad Fiedel's score to Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). One of my favourite films of all time.
    Sounds used:
    Fairlight CMI III Factory Bank loaded into Kontakt
    Big Fish Audio: Prosonus Strings, Brass, Percussion and Prepared Piano
    Rhythmic Robot Audio: Emulator II Universe of Sounds
    Big thanks to Python Blue for his advice on where to locate these sounds. Check out some of his T2 remakes:

    Wow dude amazing. I love all these sounds! I saw this UA-cam video that listed all the T2 sounds and once I learnt a vast majority of them came from the Fairlight I’ve been on a quest to find them lol. It would be awesome if someone re-released them officially. Even now they still sound great. Awesome work.

    • @AlexBallMusic
      @AlexBallMusic  6 років тому +1

      +PatrickGillMusic Hey. Great sounds aren't they! I think I started at the same video as you, it's by Python Blue?
      He helped with me with this as he'd already identified a lot of the sounds and has done some incredible remakes on his channel.
      You can get a lot of them officially now. Although they're not together as a "T2 pack". They're spread around the various banks made by various developers.
      On another note, T2 out on Blu-ray this month. :)

    • @PatrickGillMusic
      @PatrickGillMusic 6 років тому +1

      Alex Ball I remember for years I had no idea the T2 score was a synth score! Pretty incredible. It’s such a unique palette of sounds that you almost couldn’t really use anywhere else now without it sounding like T2 haha. There’s a Roland Edirol orchestral library that has a couple effects taken from the Fairlight CMI that are straight out of this score. One of them being the crescendo suspense sound in the steel mill when the T-1000 has impaled the terminator with the iron bar. Will check out those remakes :) great job again!

    • @AlexBallMusic
      @AlexBallMusic  6 років тому +1

      Yeah, it's definitely in that territory with the orchestral samples. Although the Fairlight and Emulator II had hundreds of sounds and were the backbone of the Pet Shop Boys sound for example, so could do totally different things.
      Edirol - was there really! That's really interesting. Could you send those to me? I'm interested to hear those.

    • @AlexBallMusic

      Rami Yamaha Korg Most of the sounds come from the Fairlight CMI III and Emulator II. I've listed them in the description. That's what Brad Fiedel was using, so I basically used long-winded detective work to track down the same sounds.

      Yeah, it's a hell of a score and the sounds he got out of the Fairlight are so distinctive. So awesome to get my hands on the same raw samples and try to unpick what he did.
      Remember seeing this film when it came out. We were slightly too young but a friend's brother worked at the cinema and managed to record off a copy onto VHS. Loved it then, still love it now.
      And is if that wasn't enough, the T1 score is awesome for entirely different reasons - Oberheim system, Prophet V, Linn Drum. Fiedel is a total legend!

    Alex great job at this. this is perfect as far as im concerned. not enough views likes or recognition. Would you be able to direct me to where you obtained the library for the fairlight cmi 3 samples. Ive literally looked everywhere for them with no joy at all. plenty of series 2 libraries and plugins now i believe, but its those T2 sounds I want like that brassfall and cello . Im trying to do my own rendition of this sound track as practice and obviously the more convincing it sounds, the better. If you could help that would be greatly appreciated. if not, not to worry. Thanks

    • @AlexBallMusic
      @AlexBallMusic  6 років тому

      Glad you like it. A favourite score of mine.
      So, what gets slightly tricky is that you can find the same samples, but the Fairlight coloured the sound because of its sample rate, filtering and time stretching. So the raw samples sound much cleaner. The Bitley collection has been taken from the actual hardware so that sounds authentic.
      Here's where to find everything:

    How did you get a hold of the Prosonus sounds? I’ve been trying to find those everywhere!
    It’s a real shame that the Series III sounds are only available officially through the CMI iOS app, since they keep taking it down because of the disputes between Vogel and Fairlight.

      @AlexBallMusic  5 років тому

      Prosonus is all available on the Big Fish Audio website.

  • @JoshLucan
    @JoshLucan 6 років тому +3

    Good god, how did you identify all those stacked samples and pitch manipulations?

    • @AlexBallMusic
      @AlexBallMusic  6 років тому +1

      Josh Lucan Yeah, a painful process of soloing the left and right channels and trawling through the Fairlight samples to find the matching sound. Plus, s lot of experimentation and some help from Python Blue, who has done several T2 remakes and had already identified a number of sounds.
      Also listened to the whole score and found other bits where you hear certain sounds more clearly because they were less stacked at those points.
      Some sounds are close, but not exactly what Fiedel used. The problem being that you could record into the Fairlight or load custom banks onto it, so there's probably sounds that were uniquely Brad's and aren't in the banks I have.
      This was actually probably the hardest remake I've done! I started it in February and picked it up and put it down several times as it was taking ages to figure out very small sections.

    • @JoshLucan
      @JoshLucan 6 років тому +2

      Alex Ball that is tremendous. I’m super impressed. Thanks for alerting me to T2. The soundtrack is just awesome. I had been researching the whole phenomenon of using unique sounds rather than melodies as themes and Fiedel gives a clinic. Also thanks for showing me how you can get such unsettling sounds by pitching down vintage samples. I’m super inspired to experiment with it now.

    • @AlexBallMusic
      @AlexBallMusic  6 років тому

      Josh Lucan Yeah, was reading an interview with Brad Fiedel where he was saying he enjoyed the fact that it was very blurry between sound design and music.
      A lot of the sounds are just triggered with one finger on the keyboard, or triggered by midi, but the skill is all in creating the sounds. A different kind of composition that's now very normal.
      Guess it followed on naturally from the synth scores of John Carpenter and Tangerine Dream and even Herrmann before that.
      The modern equivalent is probably Omnisphere and granular synthesis. Fun to experiment with.

      @AlexBallMusic  6 років тому

      Ben I
      It's a combination of sounds from different places. You'll find everything you need below, depending on how in depth you want to go!
      The Fairlight itself coloured the samples due to its bitrate, sample rate and filtering, so some of the samples are the clean WAV files rather than run through a Fairlight. The Bitley stuff is nicely Fairlighted. The Rhythmic Robot stuff has been taken through an EMU Emulator and is also nicely coloured.

      I tried to find that sound in the Fairlight banks and couldn't, so recreated it with a slowed down and manipulated version of a sound called "Pipe Drag FX" from a very old version of Battery.
      That definitely wasn't the sound Brad Fiedel used originally (although it's close), but I just couldn't find the sound in the Fairlight banks, so perhaps he made it himself or had other banks that I don't know about.
