Lina Khan is the best person to be in charge of the FTC. It's quite infuriating when she says they're underfunded, because we all know who is being legally bribed (lobbied) for them not to be.
The way government funding works in the US is unique, from public schools being funded mainly through local property taxes to placing large amounts of civil workers on furlough any time Congress has a tantrum. And then there's referring to what other countries call "the bureaucracy" and consider generally a good thing (they're the reliable, stable background that's not going to go bellyup simply because the government has changed) as "the deep state" and treating people who have dedicated their lifes to service of their fellow citizens as bloodthirsty monsters.

Nice get! I am happy Chair Khan is doing this work and we're finally seeing movement from the FTC on this enforcement it's far too long overdue. I hope she gets another 4 years.
I'm hopeful that this new push will bring widespread and long lasting improvements. I live in rural Western NC and the healthcare in my area has been worsening over the last several years. Non profit hospitals, usually the only hospital in the town, are being bought and turned into for profit hospitals. Prices for basic services are gouged and the variety and quality of services take a big hit. We don't even have a maternity ward in my town anymore. We used to but now you have to drive over the mountain to the next town over to have a baby in the hospital.
It’s heart breaking because NC’s maternal mortality rate continues to climb and every year state legislators introduce bills that would meaningfully help, but Moore and Berger refuse to even let those bills be heard in Committee much less get floor debates and votes. Amazing interview! Absolutely criminal that this doesn't have more views, cannot believe Adam got to interview an administration official having such a huge positive affect on us all. Thanks Lina!
I appreciate people like Lina Khan for being a leader of a new school of antitrust law that rightfully argues that excessively centralized private power is dangerous for economical, political and social reasons, and advocates for a return to a broader concern with private power and its negative effects on market competition, income inequality, consumer rights, unemployment, and wage growth. Far too long, companies like Amazon have gotten away with acting like a monopoly but because everybody’s too busy trying to make money, they’ve gotten away with it. I just hope that under her leadership, the FTC will continue to stop obvious antitrust violations from large corporations.
I am very pleased to see a renewal of antitrust enforcement. This and support for labor rights are crucial to unwinding the failed, 40 year experiment with neoliberalism as the prevailing economic regime.
Such an amazing get, Adam! Thrilled that Lena is doing outreach and hoping this brings more public attention to the hugely important work the FTC is doing!

I’m a musician, teacher , and actor who teaches private lessons in NYC. A ubiquitous practice in my field is for instrument lesson companies to hire musicians as independent contractors (absolving them of paying taxes or healthcare benefits) and offering a wage far below market standard ( sometimes as love as $35/hr, when the going rate for private music lessons in NYC is $80 at least). They typically also charge a much higher than standard rate to customers, so they make a nice profit. And to top it off, all of these companies require their teachers to sign non-competes, so they can’t build their own private studios.
I had to sign a noncompete clause when I worked at an A/V company. I was being paid $15 per hour (above minimum wage at the time) and I was thinking of starting my own A/V company, but I would have had to go jobless for 6 months for the noncompete clause to elapse before I could start my business. Same goes for the IRS. If we actually use them to tax wealth and these out of control corporations they could really help us instead of being this entity to fear like my parents always spoke about.. (which ended up screwing my generation over).
I am INCREDIBLY relieved to hear this!!! There has been so much bad news and hopelessness the last few decades and this feels like a bright spark of hope that everything can get better.

Holy crap, & she doesn't even have all the information. I'm a former Amazon seller, a mom w/four kids, & was a 1-woman show while I sold there. She's describing one of MANY terrible tactics Amazon used to shrug risk off their shoulders & onto ours.
This is an incredible interview that I found extremely informative! Please have her back or build on this topic of information for us!! This information along with workers and housing rights are going to be how we save the future of this country and any hope at freedom!
These are the interviews we need, Conover is doing great. Kind of related, but I highly recommend the book from David Dayen about the 2008 mortgage mess, for anyone interested in these sorts of topics. The dems need to use this FTC stuff for their campaigning. It’s going to convince a good amount of people that they are trying to do something for them
My huge worry is that all it will that all it will take is another president and she will lose her job and all of this will go away. It's already proven, by congressional voting records, that the overwhelmingly vote to protect the interests of the rich.
The last few months of Adam Conover developing as a creator and as a public figure in the union struggle has convinced me he should run for office. He hasn't said or done anything to explicitly encourage that opinion, but everything he's said and done has convinced me of it regardless. Also... He'd win. He's a white man with the right kind of voice and vibe, and people broadly like him. Like he said, he's been yelling about shit he wants to change for years. I honestly believe this man can and should aim to be one of the people fixing that shit.
Gym membership is the absolute worse to get out of, Airline tickets to cancel is just ridiculous with their fees, automotive vehicle sales comes with a ton of surprise fees!
I am sincerely looking forward to these changes that are being pursued. edit: at around 40:50 you talk about non-compete clauses. I want to draw attention to one more: to teachers. Imagine forcing a non-compete clause for teachers... yeah... they exist and I, personally, signed two towards the end of my career (that died due to a certain global pandemic).
@@retched Yeah. I wasn't allowed to casually go over to a neighboring school to teach nor could I tutor any students in the area. "If you make a name for yourself at this school, we don't want you leaving it and taking our students with you" was the quick answer that was thrown at me. Imagine that. And my dad wonders why I don't wanna go back and teach. zzzzzzzzzz
There are 2 grocery stores within 1 mile of me, a Smith's and an Albertsons and recently Albertsons was bought by Kroger the parent company of Smith's and now that renovations are complete and its about 6 months later now prices at both stores are higher when Albertsons was already expensive to begin with but now everything is just more expensive it's so screwed up.
I think is partially comes down to the "trickle down" ecomomics. They do not work. Companies funnel money up. Or sideways. To the shareholders and the top ecexutives never to the bottom. Its always the people doing the work that earns and keeps the companies running that get screwed. The reason America was better when anti trust laws were strict was because the average american was making significantly more money. Buying power was higher for everyone and thus the transfer of money between hands was higher. What we are seekng now is a funneling of money into accts where is just sits accruing interest and dividends. In a post industrial world there is absolutly no reason a company like Amazon should have any employees struggling to meet ends meet from their poverty level pay. All while the company is making unheard of revenue.
Our entire economy is full of monopolies, they have too much power and collude to force the government to cave to policies that don't benefit the majority. Props to her for fighting back, i hope many more take up the fight.
A major reason that you don’t see competition is because the large companies are working in cahoots with regulators and government officials/bureaucrats to make sure that there is no real competition. Most “regulation“ gets drafted by special interest groups and the most powerful companies in particular Field. They purposely increase the regulatory burden so that the only companies that survive are the largest ones with the most budget to comply with the new “regulations“.

Hang on Adam! Don't start yet! I need to make some coffee before I sit down and listen to y'all...this is gunna be a good one.
Go Lina Go You are the average persons hero. Trying to reclaim a country that was taken over by monopolies.
I’ve noticed the loss of my neighborhood pharmacy; bought by rite-aid, now closed. Received notice that my prescriptions have been moved to Walgreens.
This is great- keep up the work both of you!
She gives me hope for the continuation of this government in its current form without needing revolution to bring it down to try something else.
Oligopoly power is happening in the rental and housing markets.
These are the interviews we need, Conover is doing great.
Kind of related, but I highly recommend the book from David Dayen about the 2008 mortgage mess, for anyone interested in these sorts of topics.
The dems need to use this FTC stuff for their campaigning. It’s going to convince a good amount of people that they are trying to do something for them
I'm really excited to watch where this case goes
she's so incredible it makes me sad that all of her work will be undone in a few months 😭
She is a superstar!!!
Best podcast guest ever!!!
Thanks for this amazing interview. We love Lina!!!!
Loved this! Lina Khan needs to be a household name!
Wait... WHAT? The hell kind of non-compete can teachers have?! Like you can't teach at all or just in an area?
@@retched Yeah. I wasn't allowed to casually go over to a neighboring school to teach nor could I tutor any students in the area. "If you make a name for yourself at this school, we don't want you leaving it and taking our students with you" was the quick answer that was thrown at me. Imagine that. And my dad wonders why I don't wanna go back and teach. zzzzzzzzzz
What a great young person. Wow gives me great hope for future.
Hey, did this reverse? I saw Lina and her team took this on.
@@Zocin8 no they just took over a bunch of stores renovated them but kept them as Albertsons at least the one down the street from me.
@@JustAverageJeff so they’re still Albertsons but still jacked prices up?
@@Zocin8 yes it is more expensive now that Kroger owns it Smiths and Kroger are their cheaper stores now.
What a get! I can't wait to listen
Great video. Thanks!
8:38 Why is this legal? If you interfere with a police investigation you go to jail. Why is interference with other government entities ok?
We really need to break up affiliate television ownership companies. Community's access to locals news is dwindling.
We gotta update the system every other year to keep things up to date
Consumers need to stop using Amazon. It’s the boycott that would change the most
I think is partially comes down to the "trickle down" ecomomics.
All these anti trust laws and stuff are just bandaids, we need to get to the root cause which is democracy in the workplace
Excellent video, thank you.
Our entire economy is full of monopolies, they have too much power and collude to force the government to cave to policies that don't benefit the majority. Props to her for fighting back, i hope many more take up the fight.
Wow. You got Lina Khan!
