You are right. I made a table for a guy out of an old barn door I found. Cut and threaded the black pipe legs. He called wanted a shelf for his cable box. Added that for no extra. Firm price of $500.00 dollars. Delivered it and helped him set it up, he then asked me if I would take $50.00 less. I started to take the crap off of the desk and he asked me what I was doing. Told him we had a deal I could sell it for more than he was paying for the extra work. He stopped me and paid me. He has called several times wanting me to make things for his bar and his house. Basically told him no soup for you. I don't need customers like that.
Good stuff, Rich. I don't sell my stuff because I just putter around in my little shop as a hobby. When I make something I either keep it for myself or give it away to family and friends. But it's good info for those looking to make some extra money or to get into it full time.
Yes, yes, yes. Been there so many times with sewing and definitely agree -- especially the walmart comment. Also, something to keep in mind, just because someone asks you to buy your work from you, doesn't mean that you have to say yes to them. If you aren't interested in selling your hobby, don't feel pressured.
+Slowvannah Farms I tried discouraging people from asking for things to be made by quoting an outrageous price and saying it will take me 6 months to complete the job. Have built one piece already and have another on the go now. It didn't work!
I couldn't have said it better myself. I have found that other that a quick explanation of why hand made is more expensive than mass produced, people are will to pay for craftsmanship or their not, and not to invest to much time into trying to change their mind. There are plenty of people out there that do value and are willing to pay for well made quality products. One thing that some makers deal with is that they didn't do any market research and just started making a product without seeing if there was a need or a want for it.
Also never gives friends or family the chance to pay you what they want thinking that they'll do the right thing and pay you what you deserve. Agree on a price before you start any work. Trying to be a nice guy has burned me more than once.
man i HATE when people say thay about Walmart and target...i always say "do u want to jand this down tonir kids,or u wanna throw it out next year when it dalls apart ??"lol then a month later theyre calling back .and i totally agree wth the material x2 and go from there..thats where i start at. what do you do for FAMILYmembers ?-say a sister or a cousin?discount or no..thays where i get stuck..thanks rich!!
+Joe basementwoodworking Friend and Family should not only pay full price but want and expect to. they should know what all you do not to mention they get free stuff all the time as gifts. and you fixing stuff that needs fixing ( mostly for free)
Good, sensible, advice. "Don't undervalue - the reason they want it is because they have seen your work." Great advice.
A great no nonsense approach to pricing. Thanks for sharing
I hope it helps. ( about time to update that video) Thanks Glenn
