    I remember watching these programmes and would have been seventeen at the time. More quality with just four TV channels - how ironic is that!

    When Bergerac was something you were hooked on back in the day and looked forward to the next episode. Watching it now it feels so corny and in special, probably because they always show it on ITV3 over and over. You can't beat these old promos, I dunno what it is about them but they feel so "magical" is the best description, they are full of warmth and atmosphere, the sort of thing you felt like watching in front of a fire on a cold winters day. They never show promos or previews of major shows today, likely because they are so obsessed with not wanting to lose out on ratings or advertising.

    That is a strong line up for Xmas Day ,actually -2 feature films , a murder mystery and over 3 hrs of comedy. I remember recording Temple of Doom on vhs that day , happy times.

    • @GregOrCreg
      @GregOrCreg Рік тому +1

      Indeed. And these film premieres were BOTH huge. Temple of Doom was a great family movie, and the biggest box-office hit of 1984 within the UK, and Terms of Endearment, which closed the evening, was another big box-office hit *as well* as the major Oscar winner (i.e. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor) of 1983/84. It really felt like a 'something for everyone' lineup, as well as one where you'd happily watch pretty much every programme.

    Back then channels HAD to make great programmes! Because of the over abundance of channels these days any old crap gets on but when you only had 4 channels, those channels wanted the most views so had to put out quality material, unlike today.

    • @davidmiles2636
      @davidmiles2636 7 років тому +2

      Mark Jones Truth in that, nowadays we have multi channels with hundreds of programmes to choose from. Christmas TV nowadays just feels like any other time of year but back then it was huge.

    • @kailashpatel1706
      @kailashpatel1706 5 років тому +1

      Yep someone told me take a day in the 1980s, and the four TV schedules and compare it today...You will find a superb balance of TV and high quality material. The quality was unreal...(of course there was crap as well) but the overall standard was exceptional...today? Forget about it..

    • @GregOrCreg
      @GregOrCreg Рік тому

      It's a shame, isn't it? The more to choose from, the less quality.
      Also, there was something magical about the schedules (not just the programmes per se). The BBC went out of its way to make sure that a Christmas Day audience was completely hooked from the Queen's speech onwards (even earlier in the day, in fact, with Top of the Pops and a live Noel Edmonds show), that it didn't let up once in the schedule. Many people could quite happily be stuck in front of their TVs from Noel Edmonds at 11am to the end of Terms of Endearment in the early hours of the following morning.

    • @GregOrCreg
      @GregOrCreg Рік тому

      It pretty much was. I think it was the biggest box-office hit in the UK during 1984, and it was the first time it was showing on TV (and since SKY was very new at the time, I'm not even sure it had ever been on satellite TV by that stage, so this was likely the FIRST ever time many people were getting to see it, if they'd missed it at the cinema or hadn't rented the video).

    • @GregOrCreg
      @GregOrCreg Рік тому

      @@jamesbishop1161 And it was the biggest box-office hit within the UK during 1984, so a pretty big deal as far as film premieres went. ITV had Ghostbusters the following day, which was also a huge cinema hit, and thus a big film premiere.

    So many great and positive things with all these old shows. Great programmes, great selection of films, great comedy in the way of Only Fools (Russ Abbott was just plain awful though, but at least he didn't act a complete Knxxhead like most so called comics do today). Yes we did have Jim'll Fix it, sad to say, but we didn't know about his evil crimes back then (not the general public that is). Xmas TV today is full of annoying presenters (Ant and Dec, et all), controversy, crappy shows, annoying boxing day sales adverts, films that keep getting shown all the time and that have been repeated about 2 wks previously and are then shown on BBC3 or ITV plus channel. I bet the Great Escape was a real treat of a film to watch over Xmas then, now we're sick to death of it being shown about a hundred times now, its never off TV. Nothing on TV now is about suiting the audiences tastes, its all about advertising revenue and showing the same old crap over again so they save on cost. Where are these recordings from? they look too prestine to have been recorded from a home video tape; what's with the text signal bars at the start/first ish?. Wish I had recordings like this. Great memories.

    • @GregOrCreg
      @GregOrCreg Рік тому

      100% agreed. Shame about Jim'll Fix It, but everything else in this line-up was worth watching (great film premieres, some decent dramas, decent comedy, yes *even* Russ Abbott* was fun in an undemanding sort of way), even just as stuff you'd happily watch with your parents or granny, without being massively into yourself. These days everyone's on their tablets/phones, and no-one sits and watches shows together, with hundreds of (mostly worthless) channels to choose from, streaming, and on-demand TV.

      Sure, but you're focusing on just the negative things. Also, I doubt Manning was allowed to say anything racist whilst he was on QOS. On the plus side, Lenny Henry had a prime-time spot on Christmas Eve, so it wasn't all racism back then.
