I love the one word, short phrase answers.
    "How were we created"
    "Humans weren't created"
    "What happened?"
    "We evolved."
    "How do you know that?"
    "Because we have evidence"

If you drive south on I-75, somewhere in southern Georgia there is a billboard that proclaims "Evolution is a lie!" Not "Evolution is wrong" or "Evolution is mistaken" it's "Evolution is a lie."
This means, in these people's eyes, ALL the scientists in the world got together and said, "let's make up this thing called evolution JUST TO MAKE CHRISTIANS LOOK BAD because creationism is so true and so proven that we just can't do our science stuff."
That had me laughing all the way to Florida.

LordKellthe1st I lived and worked in Chicago for a while and when watching the tv, I first came across the god channels and I couldn't believe how they got away with it. I often holiday there, but the area to see is the Deep South, there are more churches than shops!!!! My son and me tried to count the churched while driving from Pigeon Forge to Nashville, we gave up. It's amazing how a supposed advanced nation could be so backward, religion appears to over-ride everything and it's SUPPOSED to be secular, it certainly isn't, the xtian talban rule what was once a country I looked up to.

The nut cases are the ones like you that arrogantly think you're going to improve on that. The majority of these diseases have been prevented by improved sanitation. Its hard for some people to understand this but when we die....we are dead. That's what dying means. It means you die and don't come back to life. People understand what a cat dying or a frog dying means but when it comes to them dying they think it means they really get to live forever and go to a happy place. Its based on nothing more than what makes them feel good and what they want to be true. I don't think most would even want to know if its not true.

I'm not a scientist but I have learned about electronics. I have learned from what other people who have done countless electronic experiments have discovered, and who have applied knowledge gained from people who discovered things before them. I can do the same experiments they have done to see that electronics is a valid science. I can build circuits from a schematic by connecting components together and making something that works. I can hold a computer in my hand and stick it in my pocket, and have a basic understanding of how it works. No Christian will ever question my knowledge of electronics because I'm not a scientist or engineer.
But, for some reason, they require me to be an A-level, triple-board certified, published biologist in order to say that I have the same understanding of evolution as I do electronics, or else evolution is totally false.

Ric Rouser It's quite ironic that you complain about religion being suppressed, and here you are suppressing my argument. Because you seem so adamant about deleting my comments and wanting to appear as the winner here's my response:
*"Communists thought they were good too"*
The Communists may not have worshipped a God, but they did worship a cause, and they were determined to destroy anything that got in its path. They weren't striving for the good of mankind, they were striving for the good of their nation. It's funny, you accuse Atheists of making generalisations and yet here you are equating Atheists to the Chinese Communists who slaughtered the Tibetans.
    *"If atheism is not ideology.."*
Those things exist to educate, to help people understand what Atheism actually is, and the sorts of arguments there are for rejecting Theism. However, there is no 'Doctrine of Atheism', we don't have a bible that we follow that says "An Atheist must do _x_ and must not do _y_, must think _a_ and must not think _b_" so no, Atheism is not an ideology.
*"Why do they call people who belileve different than they do stupid..."*
Like I said earlier, it isn't your beliefs that earn you the insults. It's the fact that you so ardently hold those beliefs despite not having good reason or evidence. You let the bible dictate your life, you take your morals from it, and you believe the myths written in it without good justification and overwhelming evidence to the contrary. *That* is why you get insulted.
*"the communists mocked the tibetans' holy books before they proceeded to murder...."*
While it's possible that insults can develop into hatred, that doesn't necessarily mean that all insults _must_ become hatred. Christianity has been on the receiving end of insults for centuries, since the days of Voltaire, and yet there doesn't seem to be any indication of a purge on Christians. Christianity is the world's most popular religion, the Catholic Church is a ludicrously powerful organisation. Christianity and your right to practice it is not being "suppressed".
We all throw insults at each other. Conservatives insult Liberals, meat-eaters insult vegans, yet you don't hear them cry "Hater!". Don't you think that the adult thing to do would be to quit whining, and to respond to insults and criticism with arguments and evidence to justify your beliefs? Instead of simply trying to censor them as hate and play the helpless victim.
You need to stop confusing Atheism with Anti-Theism, the two are not interchangeable. There are many Atheists like myself who are perfectly fine with people believing in whatever they want to believe in. It's when religion tries to impose itself on other people and causes harm that I take issue. When you have Christians trying to ban abortion and gay marriage, trying to dictate what is and is not taught in schools. When you have LGBT kids committing suicide because they're being tormented and disowned by their Christian families. *That* is when I take issue.

Evolution is the best explanation we have for the how modern man came about. By the way, I never said that it's impossible for there to be a species somewhere in this universe that surpasses us, but if there is, there is no evidence of that species ever visiting this planet. There is no reason to believe there is an intelligent being that is responsible for our existence.

Great answer. Our teachers when I was twelve seemed to imply that evolution was that animals would migrate to a new habitat and over a few years, they would start to change physically in order to suit their environment when - as we both know - mutations or slight differences inherent within animals in which happened to be beneficial in the habitat they were in had a better chance to survive and thus pass on their genetic material thereby passing on these traits to their offspring, etc.

@Pelonetillo If you want to stick with the apple example, that's fine. If someone told me they had two apples and threw one how do I know: whether apples were available at the time and place where he purports to have obtained them, whether he was capable of actually obtaining them (had money, etc.), whether he was capable of identifying them correctly as apples, and whether he was physically capable of throwing them. Any of these could have made his claims impossible.

Self-causation is the ultimate status of every form of the theory of evolution, every concept of an infinite regress and naturalism. To believe in self-causation one must suspend reason believe in that Shakespearean dilemma "To Be or Not to Be". Nothing can be the cause of its own existence, otherwise it will have to exist and not exist at the same time in the same relationship.

  • @FluffyFeralMarmot

Not only is the science of anthropology and archeology trustworthy and real, but it is also beautiful. To see these mysteries that have plagued mankind (forever) finally solved and understood is truly wonderful. And the universe we live in is (though not miraculous) wondrous and amazing. And, people who have not looked into the science of these things are missing out on one of the greatest things mankind has ever witnessed.

@Chaoitcme I think the better thing to say to those that claim this is that "yes but the people that I'm believing provide the notes on how they did what they did, the results, and can even post information on how to replicate the same effects or processes so that I can, if I please, witness it for myself. Never do you ask a scientist for evidence and have them say -just have faith-."

The collar was pretty much just shooting the breeze but it did reveal a lot of deficiencies in those answering the questions.
We start by not understanding yet the origin of the energy that produced all the matter in the universe, we don't know how the universe began, we don't know what most of the universe is made of, we don't know how life began, how oxygen or water got to this planet, and although we can prove through the scientific method that there is micro evolution, everything else are inferences, there were also between five and 20 mass extinctions, so not only do we not know the origin of life, but apparently this life which is extremely complex, somehow managed to be so persistent and we haven't even mentioned consciousness…
And to hear someone say that there's possibly life on other planets, thinking all of this could happen again somewhere else is puzzling.
And no, you don't have to be a scientist to believe in macro evolution but I can guarantee you that if you put the evidence in front of these two, meaning all the available fossils, they would have a look on their face like a baby looking at a mobile.

Moving Einstein’s term from the left-hand side of his equations to the right-hand side is a small step for a mathematician but a giant leap for a physicist. While it is trivial mathematically to do so, once this term is on the right-hand side, where all the terms contributing to the energy of the universe reside, it represents something completely different from a physical perspective namely new contribution to the total energy. But what kind of stuff could contribute such a term? The answer is, nothing. L Krauss
