Finding The Melody

  • My thanks to Angie Veri for posing/posting this query. In a room where the temperature was 100f by the time I finished this, I am attempting to explain how one can find the melody of a sing within and around the chord shape.
I'll admit that I flubbed some notes, but it was not about my dexterity or a performance,I just wanted to share this whilst it was on my mind.
Sooo : Major chords are of three notes, he 1st 3rd and 5th notes of the scale, and these are where most melodies begin.
The notes within a melody are going to be mostly within the chord and within the other notes within the scale.
I hope this helps. Please let my have your queries,, comments and/or corrections.

Andy you are full of guitar knowledge and I love the tutorial videos you do as I always learn something even if it's only something small.😀

Great explanation, on how to find the melody, this is what I am hopeless at, I learned a lot, you make it look so easy I know it is not. Thank you Andy.

Hi Andrew, I hope my rather slapdash method will help. Easy? Well, it just comes from many years of trying to work out what someone else might have been able to teach me in minutes, had I been able to isten, and as you see it isn't perfect.

Great instruction Andy, slow enough that I can grasp what you're demonstrating and saying, at the same time. I now understand why I haven't been able to pick out a song like others. When I "pick" I always use my index or middle finger to hit the notes. I didn't realize I should do it while holding the "chord" formation on the strings, as you've done here. I always slide my fingers along the string to the position and "guess" by the sound where to pluck, to get the correct note. Whereas, the way you're doing the "picking" it's a string within the chord you're playing, to make the note stand out from within the strum. I guess I never realized that until I saw this demonstration you've done here. I could spend hours watching people pick out the notes, but I guess I missed the whole part about the hand being within the chord formation while they were playing. That's why I wondered how people memorize the notes and where they are on the fretboard. Duh!!
Thank you for taking the time to post this great video Andy, in terms I am able to understand. Also for explaining the notes used to make a chord. I never conscientiously thought as the chords made of, usually three notes. Nor did I know the names of each note, although I do know how to play the different chords and their names. That much I learned on my own, by looking in music books, as to where my fingers have to be positioned, in order to get a certain chord.
Again Andy, thank you for this awesome demonstration, especially in the sweltering heat you're getting this summer. I find it very helpful to learn the "huge" part I was missing to connect the dots, in order to strum and pick out the notes with greater ease, while singing and playing.

Hello! Have yet to view the video completely cause (gag) I am watching Mueller testify. But I scroll these comments while watching/listening to the testimony....Your assessment is spot on and I look forward to watching with interest and attention SM's video very soon. I am finding more freedom when playing a chord to determine a single note(s) from said chord to emphasize while strumming/picking. This is a deliberate thought/feel process I slowly acquired when I decided to try to play the melody of the songs while strumming chords. You are correct when you say "picking" a note (or 2 or 3) from the chord formation itself or note implied by the chord. When doing so at least for me it helps guide me to go beyond the expressed melody (improvisation?) while moving the the next chord in the song. This is liberating to me to actually think a note and to take it to fingers. I play slowly and try to articulate the note striking the string with deliberate motions to show emotion, pause, change, playfulness...to name a few. Kinda like being a storyteller/orator...music is communication afterall we are having a discussion whether with ourselves and with others ...both require attentive listening for an appropriate response. Truly enjoy Andy's videos! Sorry for the blather here but guess I'm being influenced by all the politicians on my screen. Cheers!

    Hi Andy,
Thank you for your wonderful sessions. The first one I discovered showed me how to string my D35s slot neck successfully. Now I know that the major chords contain the scale notes. That’s something the instructional books and tutorials I have encountered did not include. I too use my guitar to allow me to sing the songs I love. My progress over the years has been modest at best. I mostly do my own interpretation of Travis picking (pinch/thumb-finger-thumb/pinch). Now, I hope to be more able to find the melody notes. Thank You, again, John.

Great video. I'd like to be able to pick out single note melodies so that I can multi track it over the rhythm...maybe one day.

We are all learning no matter how clever or experienced we are;, it's a journey not a destination. Enjoy the ride.

Hi Jeff, it takes tme i guess, and to become involved in the narrative of the song vocally and in the melody.

I realized that many sung melodies are more-so shapes and embellishments than they are pure, specific notes.

Hi Katarina, I find that the melodies are usually with the chords if you look for them, Best, Andy
