Watch Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) accept their induction awards from the 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony at the Barclays Center in New York City.
Why did it take so long? ELO was ahead of their time and Jeff is a genius. Everything he touches is musical gold. He should be recognized on his own too.

ELO was part of the soundtrack of my youth. "Living Thing", "Evil Woman","Sweet Talkin Woman", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Twilight", the Xanadu soundtrack, "Calling America"...they all take me back. I still listen often.
That's the longest speech that Jeff's ever given!!! Now, off to the pub for a pint and a ciggy!

Roy can not only play multiple instruments, but he can play multiple FAMILIES of musical instruments--including brass, strings, woodwind, and percussion. On Annie Haslam's "Annie in Wonderland," Wood is credited with playing electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, string bass, mandolin, cello, balalaikas, saxophones, drums, bass clarinet, trumpet, African drums, percussion, string ensemble, Moog, piano, clavinet, backing vocals, and co-lead vocals on "I Never Believed in Love".

Groucutt, Kaminsky, McDowell, Gale, bloody Lynne thinks it was all about him. Total bullshit that he snubbed his great string players that MADE their distinct sound over the best part of their career. And Kelly Groucutt was tremendous. Not even a mention or a kudo? What an ass IMHO.
We're very proud of you Jeff. We're also very proud of Roy, Bev, Richard, Kelly, Michael, other Michael, Mik, Hugh, Wilf, Steve, Bill, Melvin, Andy, Trevor, and Colin as well as anyone I missed in ELO. I am so glad to see such an underrated band finally get the recognition they deserve. Thank you for being there for me during all of those long high school nights when I needed you the most.

True... though he left the group a third of the way into recording their second album (taking Bill Hunt and Hugh McDowell with him, though the latter would return a little over a year later), which makes Kelly Groucutt's snub from the group's induction kind of unfair.

I had all the albums from ELO to Out of the Blue and I still rate those albums as the classic ELO. I hated 'Shine A Little Love' and 'Horace Wimp' so never bought Discoverty...

ELO was a huge part of my youth. Listen to them still today in my 50’s and counting. Finally got to see them live in Denver ...one of the biggest highlights of my life!
I found it interesting that Roy Wood was also inducted, but then I went WAIT!!!! Roy founded the whole band! So yes, he deserves to be treated with the utmost respect and inducted, as well! It was his original idea, even though Jeff Lynne took over and made ELO into the magnificent band of musicians that he did! Thank you both, Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne! Jeff, you are absolutely incredible!!!

The argument could be made that he deserves his own entry, based on Move, ELO, Wizzard, and solo. But he didn't have the commercial impact in the US that is expected, whereas post-Wood ELO did. And Lynne produced a lot and collaborated with HoF musicians in many ways.
I thought the original Idea of the orchestral/rock fusion was Jeff's????

Since I was 18, they've been in my life. Their music and harmonies fit what my sould craved to hear. Telephone Line was my 1st 45 rpm of theirs with a green disc and picture sleeve. Now I'm 62 and still crave their music. When I heard he was doing Cloud 9 and Tom Petty, I knew a masterpiece was in the works. The Beatles Anthology with their new records was perfect because of Jeff.

Roy Wood is awesome, nobody should forget his brilliant works with the Move, Wizzard and his solo LPs. Also a real gentleman in person, a gracious and loving person to other musicians.
so what the hell has that got to do with ELO, he was gone when they made it big, maybe the Beatles should of mentioned Pete Shotton and every other person that was involved in the Quarrymen before they became the Beatles.
If you bothered to learn some history you'd find there would be no ELO with out Roy doesn't matter he left after the first record he was one of the two founders.

ELO?! It was Jeff Lynne and Roy who pissed off after 2 albums! Jeff only name-checks 2 other members - Bev and Richard. What about the rest of them. A total egomaniac. And a selfish one at that. Kelly was co-vocalist on many tracks and lead vocalist on others. Mik Kaminski and the rest of the string players were also complete;y ignored! He should hand the award back!
@@yeoldcap Listen my old grumpy... First it's the Rock Hall Of Fame who decides who will be inducted. 2nd Roy left the band because of the manager. He wanted to be the lead. He is still friend with Jeff Lynne. 3rd Jeff Lynne wrote all the hits for ELO and produced everything. Lastly Jeff disbanded ELO because he wanted to produce, write and play with some of the greatest music legends on this planet.

Indeed, take away the jokier songs like "Don't Mess Me Up" and "My Marge" and the last Move album sounds quite similar to ELO's first album (albeit without strings).

This was a missed opportunity to have 10538 overture performed live by Jeff and Roy just like the studio version. (But don’t get me wrong this was still AWESOME to see!)
Long overdue. Wish they could have gotten this decades ago when the band was still on the same page.
The RRHOF implicitly honors the other work of artists when they are recognized in one particular group setting. In this case, Roy Wood's work with The Move and Wizzard, as well as the fact that Roy provided the initial platform for Jeff Lynne to perfect ELO is but one example. Another was the previous induction of Traffic which implicitly honored Stevie Winwood's earlier work with Spencer Davis and his later work as a solo artist, as well as the solo work of Dave Mason. However, it is the responsibility of those being honored in their speeches to name those who made significant contributions in the group being awarded who did not receive official recognition. There are too many examples of these omissions.
Agreed. Jeff left out Mik and Kelly who were totally part of the ELO sound. They feature in many of the misic videos , yet were 100% omitted from his speech! How dare he!

I'm glad Roy was there. Richard was ill. My favourite ELO track is 10538 Overture. Roy in the band at the time. In The Move days, Night of Fear is brilliant. The catchiest tune ever and great bass line.

I would've liked to have seen ALL former members inducted (i.e. Bill Hunt, Steve Woolam, Wilf Gibson, Colin Walker, Mike de Albuquerque, Mik Kaminski, and Melvyn Gale as well) rather than an arbitrarily selected few. Same goes for all groups inducted.
Unfortunately, from what I've heard, Mr. Blue Sky only wanted him, Bevan, Wood, and Tandy inducted. The Hall had initially considered including Kelly, Hugh, and Mik Kaminski (since they were on the most famous albums) but Jeff requested they be excluded. A real shame.
