That's because they can't be cleaned up with paint-strippers, but instead need full repaints. There's a reason why the newer trains for Bucharest are made from stainless steel, makes it super easy to clean them from graffiti if they get painted.

The graffiti on the outside seems different from that on the inside: The graffiti on the inside seems like numerous but scattered random scrawls which might or mgiht not contain words, whereas the graffiti on the outside seems systemic, with each car having a theme, so highly ordered that it almost seems that an institution (even if unofficial) was formed to coordinate the effort.
the inside contains handstyles. some are harder to read and that is understandable, as you have to have knowledge in the field of handstyling to make out the letter strcutre. the outside of the trains contains pieces, which work toghether because each piece has a pleasing color scheme, which is a a result of good knowledge in color theory. there are also what we call "crew pieces" there, which are pieces that a group of graffiti artists come toghether to put up
They are the most powerful trains. Now that Alstom doesn'r repair most of our trains, M4 (where they are) is the only line where the interval between trains is normal because these IVA trains are strong and need a repair rarely

While they were a regular on line M3, there was no window painting and back in the day it was actually art. Newer trains have anti vandalism exterior and also enhanced security

I live in Australia, Perth and we have just 100 thousand more people here and graffiti on trains here is very rare these days. Around 10 years ago it was starting to be something that was a little bit more common but that has been fixed mostly.
I think that in a few years time, these trains will be a thing of the past, once the new Alstom Metropolis trains will enter use on M5 (and probably M4), while (I think), Bombardier trains of the lines M1 and M3 would have a mid-life-refurbishment
They're completely separate. IVAs will continue to live on until M6 gets opened and M4 gets extended. Those two need to happen since nobody at Metrorex is in their right mind to order new trains for the M4's ancient signalling.

That's normal for Romania. These trains were produced at the Arad Vagoane Enterprise during communism. They are old and it is normal for something like this to happen to them.

I think they just decided to leave the trains as is because it was not worth clean up the graffiti. Metro trains in budapest in the 2000s and 90s also had a very bad graffiti problem.

That was Metrorex's plan all along ever since the introduction of the new Bombardier trains in 2002. Especially since they didn't want the new Bombardier trains to be painted like their "siblings" in Stockholm, the C20.

It's so bizarre to see all the comments here about the grafitti! To us romanians it's something that under communism would not have been allowed, so it's like an expression of freedom, modern art, so to speak! It's not very pretty, but it's kind of cool! Seeing these trains is very nostalgic for me, it reminds me of my childhood! There's only a few of these trains left, and they're gonna be retired eventually !

IVA trains are now maybe 10% of the entire system of metro in Bucharest. The rest are new ones which they are clean because they are security supervised. The IVA old ones are not part of the deal as they will be dismantled. Also stations are fine. The terrible traffic only on this last old ones.

Man, these were used for some IVA trains. These are like 45-46 years old. The oldest ones. The newer models are like 30 years old.
