It has already been revealed in flashback that there is "close personal history" between them. Both actors play their roles as there is something more than just friendship between the characters. I also believe that Fury, Quake, Jenna and Fitz also see this but say nothing. I also believe that Clark Gregg and Ming Na Wah are playing it to the hilt for the fanbase, probably far more than the producers and writers have designed. In the end, while I would love to see them together, the final scene of the final show of AoS will probably show show both characters from the back and they will nonchalantly reach over and hold hands and leave it all up in the air. I can also see a future timeline scenario where a senior SHIELD agent works with Coulson and his team....that agent will be revealed as to be their child and that both characters have a long and happy life together after SHIELD.
